Kicker situation

Let's talk about something that has gotten very little talk. Our kicker situation right now is not bad with the resigning of Chandler. He did very well in filling for John Hall. Now John Hall has been injured a lot the past two years. Mainy to his legs. I know he has one of the best legs in the NFL, but when do the injuries to the leg of a kicker start to catch up with you. If he was to get hurt severly again this year. What would you all do?

Re: Kicker situation

Although I like Hall's leg strength, I have nothing against starting Chandler until he has recovered. It might not even be such a bad idea to use one of them along with Chad Morton as trading bait.

Re: Kicker situation

According to my favorite sugar-coated news-site Redskins.com, everyone has been VERY excited to be back in the weight room.

I'm concerned that we haven't heard a story on how "John Hall is progressing in rehab." There has been one about everybody except for him. If Redskins.com hasn't posted it, it may be safe to assume his leg has rotted off.

Re: Kicker situation

Hall had injury problems last year, but other than that I don't recall him having any major issues previously.

If he can get back to 100% he's our kicker without question, but Chandler is a decent kicker to have waiting in the wings.

Re: Kicker situation

I think it's good that we resigned Chandler- he's a solid kicker and will give Hall some competition. But I'd keep Hall for atleast another year unless he continues to struggle with hamstring and groin injuries. It's hard to find a good, young kicker in the league and it appears that we have two. Damn I hate this drought in redskins news!!

Re: Kicker situation

Hall is amazing for kickoffs and long kicks. His accuracy can be off, but he is 10 steps above chandler!

Re: Kicker situation

Chandler has done nothing to suggest he can be a reliable kicker and Hall is a long way from being among the elite.

Then why hasn't he been able to keep a gig?
Parts of two years in SF. Pretty much left in disgrace.
Split five games between Carolina and the Skins last year.
Doesn't sound very promising.

Re: Kicker situation

it always good to have a back up plan. Hall wouldn't be hurt half as much if he acted like a kicker and not a member of the defense, when they got near him.

Re: Kicker situation

I definitely think Hall will be our man if he is healthy. If Hall's accuracy problems become apparent, I say maybe we give Chandler the field goal kicking duties.

Re: Kicker situation

I don't think Hall's accuracy is in question at all. He came to us with a kick rating in the high 70's but that was playing in the Meadowlands, which is notorious for its swirling winds. He's a top 10 kicker and could be a top 5 with a good, healthy year.

Chandler seemed to be money within 35 yards, but he gets really shaky really quick beyond that. He almost hit Daseal and I with a poorly kicked ball before the Vikes game! Chandler is OK, but not good enough to take Hall's roster spot away from him.

They are football players. LOL

Re: Kicker situation

I'm not doubting Hall at all. I'm just saying if his leg is still aggrivated to where it might affect his field goal kicking.

Then again, if it affects that, it would probably effect his kickoffs...

Re: Kicker situation

I don't believe that Hall's injuries had anything to do with contact. The first one was a purely kicking injury, a muscle simply ripped when he kicked the ball. He had a hard time coming back from that and probably pushed himself too hard.

I think that an offseason of full rehab will bring him back to 100%.

Daseal 03-29-2005 02:21 PM

Re: Kicker situation

Wasn't Halls' problem that he continued to kick after the injury?

Re: Kicker situation

I'm actually surprised to see so many people this high on Hall. I have nothing against the guy (in fact I like his intensity for a kicker), but has anyone really looked at his numbers? He's lifetime 182-247 (73.7%) overall and 41-71 from 40-49 (57.7%) and only 13-27 from 50+ (48.1%). Those numbers are actually painfully average to below average for a veteran NFL kicker. I still think he's better than Chandler, but I wouldn't mind an upgrade at kicker sometime down the road.

Re: Kicker situation

I think Hall will be the guy.... but I say let them battle it out in training camp. I defintley like Chandler; and I hope if Hall beats him out, we can find a way to keep him around incase of injury. I think Hall is proboably the better kicker though.

Re: Kicker situation

Hall is definitely better if he can stay healthy. If not Chandler isn't too bad of a back up but not on long kicks. What's Mark Mosely up to these days???

sportscurmudgeon 03-29-2005 07:45 PM

Re: Kicker situation

If either Hall or Chandler is injured coming out of the exhibition season, then the decision is made for the Skins. However, if both are healthy, the Skins will almost assuredly release one of them. I don't see them carrying and dressing two kickers for every game.

That is the reason that "dangling one of them" even in a package with Morton - who is also someone with next to zero trade value - will get you very few return phone calls. Teams know that the Skins will likely release one of the kickers and so they'll wait to see who is out there and decide if that is an upgrade to what they have,

Side issue here: The idea of packaging Morton and Hall as trade bait is really interesting since it is half of the "Jetskins" raid that Danny Boy allegedly put over on those stupid NY Jets. All of a sudden, half of the haul from that raid is trade bait that might garner a seventh round draft pick and some rolls of tape for the training staff whilst another guy stolen in that raid is back with the Jets but with a load of Redskins' money in his pocket. I wish the archives of this board went all the way back to the days when the Jetskins raid was front sports page news because NO ONE here would have ever thought this would be the outcome so shortly afterwards.

The bottom line is that Chandler is a decent back-up but not someone who is nearly good enough to be an elite kicker in the league. Hall is better but is also short of elite status.

Ya... and we signed Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith and Mark Carrier.
Sounds like we needed someone in DC that had some talent evaluation skills.

azskinsfan:

Even though I know you don't really want to find Mark Moseley to re-sign him as the Skins' kicker for 2005/06, I'll tell you what he was doing as of two years ago. He was the Athletic Director at Colgate University.
