Redskins sign young tackle Bruce Campbell

Skins signed 25-year old tackle Bruce Campbell to a 1-year contract.

Good signing for depth and camp competition for starting RT spot if we cannot land a better FA to replace Polumbus. He's also insurance if we decide to go the route of a draft pick to fill the RT spot. Rookies are never a sure thing as we learned with our rookie safeties last season.

They are signing non elite talent on the O-Line, not happy about that.

probably didn't sign him as a starter. I see him more as our new punt returner.

It's only Day 2.

O-lineman did not have the demand that defensive backs had on Day 1, so there are plenty of quality starters still out there.

Big men who are great athletes get multiple chances to succeed. It's a one-year contract, so I'm OK with it if it's under $1MM.

Got him for less than a mill.
He will be competing for a roster spot, not necessarily a starting spot, per Tandler.
Depth to go into training camp with.
No need to take cyanide yet, ladies.

Low risk...and if Campbell has matured so that he can use his oodles of raw talent, high reward.

I like it.

I like these young signings. Gives a lot of room to grow. And we COULD pick up a starter in the draft. It's way too early to start panicking.

First signing where I'm like eh...

Sounds like competition for a backup spot.

Might not even make the team.

I'm fine with giving him a look.

I remember his combine, wanted us to draft him. I believe he was taken in the 4th rd. IMO brought in for competition. Maybe Forester can bring the BEST out of him worth kicking the tires.

While remaining patient (I keep reminding myself) this is another one that's a head scratcher. Why sign a guy, at this point in free agency, with zero career starts and didn't play a snap last season due to injury? There could not have been any competition for him and if there was...so what? IF he makes the opening day roster he's probably inactive every week. Can't see him playing special teams in a meaningful way.

This and Moss have made the least sense to me. This could've been done a day before OTA's not 20 hours into the league year.

NYCskinfan82 03-12-2014 04:17 PM

Re: Redskins sign young tackle Bruce Campbell

IMO you sign some guys now because you want to see there workout habits have your trainers work with them and see if you can improve them.

Doesn't matter either way really. They have a set goal in their mind of who they want signed and dollars they want spend. Obviosuly Moss or Campbell didn't hinder this overall goal so sign them now if you think they have value.

To me that's the problem. If they think they have value, I'm starting to have SERIOUS questions about the evaluation skills going on in the room.

Agreed. These are bargain moves and don't have much impact cap wise.

Teams don't necessarily make moves in order of importance or value.

Re: Redskins sign young tackle Bruce Campbell

We could bring in another vet WR for the price of Moss. Maybe we'll get another Devery Henderson or Donte Stallworth, they worked out well...but you can't replace Moss' experience with the team and locker room presence for that price.

If we need him for just a spot on the depth chart, he's far more valuable than any random body off the street.

I buy that in a baseball locker room. On an NFL roster with 53 spots and a strong need at the position group on a roster coming off of 3-13, there's no room for 'grandpa reps'. Don't get me wrong, I love what Moss has done for us..especially through 2012, but last year he was a liability and won't get any better. I just don't get why he was signed.

Teams can carry 90 players during the offseason. They could let him go at any time. But he's a vet they know well and even at this point in his career he probably offers more than most guys out there for a 4th or 5th option.

Re: Redskins sign young tackle Bruce Campbell

I think we need to keep reminding ourselves that free agency is not the way to build championships - especially not a way to build a young, talented team. I'm fine with free agency being ho-hum and hopefully keep looking at the draft for starters. I think the 'skins can land some high quality guys in the draft, and hopefully continue to develop the current guys who have been drafted by the team.

If you say so but I don't see it. I see a guy who dropped a lot of passes and didn't gain much yardage after the catch in 2013. There are probably 20 other receivers that can give us what he does at his level on the depth chart.

Ok well, we're talking about a 4th or 5th WR here on a vet min deal, no guarantee he even makes the team.

I guess I just don't get what there is to be so upset about.

Yeah there's absolutely nothing to be upset about.

Moss's deal counts $600K against the cap, and bumps a guy out of the top 51 who makes $500K. So the net impact to the cap is a measly $100 grand. And you can cut him with no dead money.

In other words you keep acting like you haven't done anything at the WR position yet, bring in more talent, and let them fight it out for roster spots.

I can't stand how people don't understand that the incremental impact fo vet min deals on the cap is virtually zero. THERE IS NO DOWNSIDE.

Same goes for Bruce Campbell.

What are the rules on UDFA signing bonuses ? do they count against the cap ?............. granted it is not much money... just another no risk option

This could be the year where they sign a bunch of UDFAs, and get lucky with a LB, TE, or S

Lol skins don't have a good roster outside of 4-5 players. We need a foundation before we overpay in free agency.

Dirtbag59 03-12-2014 05:46 PM

Re: Redskins sign young tackle Bruce Campbell

I've actually been surprised lately how seriously NFL teams take scouting high school and college players in their back yard. Obviously Campbell is a pretty easy connection given that he played at Maryland but I've seen a couple of examples lately of players that went out of state to go to college and ended up signing modest contracts with their local pro team from their high school days. Sure they usually get cut before the season starts but thats besides the point.

I remember when Skins fans were crying for the team to draft him in the 2nd round...lol It's a good thing they don't run the team. Here we are today with the guy on the squad (however brief it may be) and for dirt cheap.

It's better than overpaying like the Raiders did Saffold.(who I believe will be playing guard)

42.5 million, $21 million guaranteed, over five years

Holy crap, I mean Saffold is certainly a good player but that contract seems a little on the high end. And by high I mean reefers......because thats what the Raiders front office does.....since pot is like legal.....in California....I think....not sure....really not sure where I'm going with this.......

mooby 03-12-2014 06:51 PM

Re: Redskins sign young tackle Bruce Campbell

I honestly think the Raiders just threw a big number on the table for Safford because this year teams have to be spending at least 90% of their cap. Being forced to spend + a lot of cap room to fill + a player you desire = huge win for Saffold.

CRedskinsRule 03-12-2014 07:08 PM

Re: Redskins sign young tackle Bruce Campbell

The 89% is over 4 years (2013-2016), but yes they do need to spend, but why not spend on their own guys?

Raiders will regret that contract just like every free agent contract they've done. Campbell is good, but he has to get healthy.

Actually, they are safe from that deal. Saffold failed his physical so it's a no go.
