Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Here's a piece of news we can really chew on:
Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...5-2005Apr6.html By Jason La Canfora Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, April 7, 2005; Page D01 Washington Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs expressed frustration yesterday over the absence of top wide receiver Santana Moss and starting safety Sean Taylor from voluntary offseason workouts, which are in their third week, and believes both key players should be attending regularly. "Everybody should be here," said Gibbs, who stressed the importance of workouts when in a team meeting that neither player attended last week. "Everybody should be here, and it's very disappointing to us when they're not here." Moss, 25, was Washington's most significant offseason addition and was acquired from the New York Jets last month for star receiver Laveranues Coles, who requested a trade after expressing concerns about Washington's offense. Taylor was selected fifth overall in the 2004 draft and has been seeking to renegotiate his contract, which is worth a maximum of $40 million. Both players, who attended the University of Miami and are represented by agent Drew Rosenhaus, are believed to be working out in Florida. Moss has one year and $450,000 remaining on his contract, and the Redskins immediately expressed a strong desire to sign him to a new deal. Moss is seeking a contract with a significant signing bonus comparable to other top receivers, sources said, and, those talks appear to have hit a snag. Gibbs said he believed that Moss's absence was related to his desire for a new contract, adding, "We're just working through a process there and trying to work [his contract] out, but the bottom line is everybody should be here." When asked if he thought a resolution was near, he said, "I have no idea. We're just trying to work our way through it." Gibbs confirmed last week that team officials had held discussions with Taylor to hear his contract concerns, but at this point the Redskins do not appear inclined to greatly alter that deal. "We've had some meetings there," Gibbs said last Thursday, "But he's got a contract, and we're all set there for a bunch of years, so we're in good shape there." Rosenhaus has not returned numerous phone messages regarding Moss and Taylor, but told the Associated Press last month that Moss was thrilled to be a Redskin. "He's going to be a focal point of their offense," Rosenhaus said. "I anticipate that we'll be able to work out a very lucrative extension for him.'' The Redskins were adamant about getting rid of Coles after he expressed a desire to play elsewhere, taking a $9 million salary-cap hit to complete the trade, but Coles was routinely lauded for his passion during games, practices and offseason workouts, a fact not lost on some Redskins yesterday who privately expressed concerns about Moss's actions so early in his tenure with the organization. Most every Redskins player is at the team's headquarters at least four days a week, lifting weights and working on conditioning. This time is most critical for receivers and quarterbacks, however, particularly those who have never played together, as the Redskins are desperate to improve the league's third-worst passing game. Starting quarterback Patrick Ramsey said he left a phone message with Moss but has yet to speak with him and has no idea when he might report to Redskins Park. While not criticizing the receiver, Ramsey said he believes a lot can be accomplished in voluntary workouts. "Our job now is to prepare," Ramsey said, "and you don't even want to really approach it from a job standpoint, you want to approach it kind of from a pride standpoint, that this is what I want, this is what I need to do -- and maybe even more than this -- to get ready to get to where we want to go as a team. It's not like I have to go do it, it's like, 'it's time to go get it done.' " Wide receiver Taylor Jacobs, who has not spoken to Moss but is represented by Rosenhaus, said: "I think Santana's got some things he's got to work out right now with the organization and his agent. We share the same agent, and I know our agent will get it done. But being out there with the guys this time of year is great, and it's a chance to get better." Moss was selected 16th overall by the Jets in 2001 and posted his best season in 2003 with 74 catches for 1,105 yards and 10 touchdowns. Last season he slipped to 45 receptions for 838 yards and five touchdowns. "I don't really understand how all this works, and I guess it's not a huge surprise to me that he's not here," said second-year H-back Chris Cooley, "but it's kind of weird that he's brand new here and it looks like he's not going to make it for the workouts." Redskins Notes: The Redskins signed linebacker Brian Allen, who had been with Carolina, to bolster their special teams. . . . A miscommunication between Taylor and team officials resulted in the Redskins ordering and selling jerseys with his name and the No. 21 on the back at team stores. Taylor did not change from No. 36, however, and, according to a team representative, the mistake has been corrected. Those who bought the No. 21 jersey will be given refunds if they desire. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Okay...yeah Taylor and Moss are working out in Florida..but it's a team thing! I know these workouts are voluntary, but I believe every player showing up and working out as a team shows unity and shows that those guys want to make a difference. Not the type of news I like to hear coming from one of our up and coming stars in taylor, and a new receiver like Moss who needs every chance he can get to develop something with his quarterback.
Moss is seeking a contract with a significant signing bonus comparable to other top receivers, sources said, and, those talks appear to have hit a snag.
Stop worrying - I found the sang. He's not a top receiver. I think Moss being at the workouts is more important than Sean. He's not the one adapting to a new system. Though I'm not excusing him. Everyone should be there. I swear to god, these Miami guys are like the people that graduate high school but still come back for lunch every day. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Moss should really be there, so should Taylor, but Moss especially. New team, new system, new QB, c'mon Moss get your butt to DC.
Daseal, I was thinking the same thing, what's up with these Miami guys?? They really think their shit don't stink. |

Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
How ironic that a camp holdout says such things.

Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Seriously, why the hell would we want to overpay his @$$ if hes not even going to workout?? Honestly, he is not a top teir reciver, so he shouldnt be paid like one. If he is so good; load his contract with lucrative incentives and if he performs well then he can get paid for it. Not a good way to start off, IMO.
Taylor... who knows with him. I'm just gonna put on my burgandy googles and look past it for now. I did like that some of the guys seemed to be taking a leadership role, and kinda "calling" out Moss inperticular. Cooley and Ramsey both had comments that were encouraging to hear. I'd be pissed off if I was Ramsey; Id want to get as much time in with Moss as possible. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
How ironic that a camp holdout says such things.
I don't think his holdout was unreasonable. A guy has to get a fair deal and if holding out gets it then it was the way to go. There are so many sides to the issue though so I am conflicted when guys hold out for sure. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
I'm laughing at all of you who thought that this was going to be a Patriot thing......wake up Dorthy were not in Kansas anymore.....LOL

Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
ugh, i hate to see it. ST just gets more and more erratic.

Yup. So does Ramsey.:Smoker:

Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Both of them missing i believe is a big deal. Moss should have no excuse i understand he would like a contract extension, and knowing snyder it will get done. But he should be there working with ramsey to get chemistry i dont know about you guys, but i expect a big year out of moss with the money we are about to pay him. As for Taylor, i truly believe that this sean taylor situation could lag on a bit. We all know that he wasnt happy at all with his rookie contract (incentive based deal). With how he played last year hes looking for big $$$ and i believe he deserves it, but he also signed his name on the dotted line. One thing i remeber Chris Mortensen said right before we drafted sean taylor was a close source to him told him that "Teams needed to do alot of digging on him before drafting him". By no means im not saying we shouldnt of drafted him because we made the right choice i just believe sean might cus a slight problem.

Taylor is still young you think that 1 year will make difference? Now if he is doing this 5 years from now then yeah I would have hoped he would grow out of it!! |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Taylor and Moss both have contracts and should be at workouts. Taylor has not earned a contract redo yet-and Moss would help his cause by being at workouts.
|
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
This just pisses me off to no end. I just don't get this "the world owes me something" attitude. This shows tremedously poor character for both of them as far as I'm concerned. What great team leaders they are!
Neither one of them have an excuse for not being there. Period. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Exactly. I mean don't you think that GIBBS would step up to the plate for them on their contracts if they showed up to the workouts. I think if you're a team player, things will work themselves out because people will bust their ass for you if you do for them.
|
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Uh oh, sounds like curmudgeon has meathead twins to worry about now.
|
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Moss missing the work out sends a big message. From reading the posts on this web sight from the guys that defended the Coles for Moss trade...Moss was supposed to be a better team player than Coles. He was supposed to have a better attitude and be a better locker room guy, because Coles did not want to be here.
Not a good start for Moss! As for ST, I do not care that he is not here for the work outs. He knows our system and had a great year last year. He is not a guy that regularly comes in out of shape. He is fit as a fiddle and a great player. I do not see how these VOLUNTARTY work outs are going to help him, except expose him to the possibility of injury. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
I still wish he could have showed. I'm sure he's training down in Florida, but I would like to see a little more team-first attitude out of him.
All I hope is that neither of these situations are contract-based, even though I bet they are. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
The redskins really need to start drafting/signing a different type of player. Talent is fine but its not enough, the skins need to focus more on the player's inteligence/maturity/work ethic. NE is the best example of this, sure they have talent (every nfl team does) but they also have the highest team % of college graduate players. I think this team intelligence is at least as much if not more important a factor in their run than the football talent.
The skins need to stop signing player with million dollar bodies and 2 cent heads. When the do, they will start winning titles. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
They definitely need to find a mix of the two, however I am not opposed to taking physical freaks like Taylor if it means he might do something unacceptable every now and then. People like Randy Moss who are all talent and poison; those are the people who I wouldn't wish on the Skins.
|
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
A physical freak is worthless if the player cant adjust or is constantly out of position. Everyone in the NFL is talented and while some players are freaks (like LA) the reality is they just cant dominate in the nfl like Shaq can in the nba.
A smart team of average nfl players would pummel a team of Moss', LA's, & Taylors. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
I'm stunned to hear that Taylor may not be there because he wants to restructure his contract!!! He's not proved anything to anyone yet. He finally earned his starting position last season & now he feels he should be paid better..? I don't see Taylor staying with the Skins after his contract expires, since he's been here he's been all about ST & not about being a Skin. He should learn something from Lavar, Jansen, & Samuels who all showed they love playing in Washington, oh & did I forget to mention that they are all Pro Bowlers too. Sean wake up & get your ass down to the work outs.
Moss is in my opinion, just another small WR who thinks he's large & in charge. The Jets moved him for obvious reasons & so will the Skins soon enough. What happened to players who played for the pride of the game & not just for the $$$ Football players are losing their objectivity. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
I would disagree on that. I do completely agree that the Redskins should look more into character (and I think Gibbs is doing that). I do think that it's really hard to know TRUE character individuals unless it is something that is obvious from college (Clarett) or from another team. I think that the people that the Skins have signed in the off-season (with the exception of Moss) SEEM to be good character guys.
|
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
What makes Moss a bad character but Taylor good?
|
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
I didn't say Taylor was good. I AM saying that Moss is not sending good signals because he has no reason not to be at the workouts being a new player at all.
I'd prefer if Taylor were at the team workouts but I think I read somewhere that the U players are all working out in Florida. Taylor is definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I wouldn't trade him for any player in last year's draft. |

Ty Cobb - 1924 I know its a different sport, but that was the thinking 81 years ago. Its all a cycle man. . . But I digress. I think that Moss not showing up is HUGE red flag, and if Taylor isn't showing up because of his contract and his contributions with his long and storied career, that is A HUGE FREAKING RED FLAG. . .. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
I'm hoping that's not the case, but it very well may be.

First off, even the Patriots have problems from time to time. Second, before we all get crazy here, let's remember these are "voluntary" workouts. Do I wish everyone was there, sure. Is the season over and both Taylor and Moss are flops because they aren't attending these sessions, definitely not. Let's keep things in perspective. If this was training camp I'd be worried. |
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
I am going to agree with TAFKAS (I think he's the one who said it), Taylor truly did get a minimal contract for someone of his stature. I'm sure he could go about it more tactfully, but he does have reason to want to restructure.

Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Bottom line is that Moss is clearly retarded. So someone correct me if i'm wrong, he's coming off a VERY average, he's entering a contract year, and yet he doesn't show up. Wow. Hey Moss you want a big contract how about you have a big year first, and then get your contract. He clearly isn't worth big money, he' got to prove himself. But hey knowing the skins, they'll probably overpay.
|
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
yeah they might. but i don't understand sean taylor. if they gave him an incentive based contract last year and he performed and got his money, why is he complaining about it? this isn't just a problem with the redskins where former miami players go back to workout there. it's a leaguewide problem.st and moss aren't the only players at miami's workout. ed reed and ray lewis are probably down there too. and see what the ravens fans say about them. if st performed well, give him his contract. but im dissapointed in moss. he hasn't even played a down with the skins yet and he's already decided he can do what he wants. i say we give him a good contract at the end of the season if he performs well.
|
Re: Taylor, Moss Miss Redskins Workouts
Taylor got hosed on his rookie contract - let's keep him happy, not piss him off for 6 more years. Give him a moderate contract which he will quickly outgrow. I feel that within two years he will be the best player on our defense without a doubt!
Moss isn't the elite receiver he thinks he is. The whole Coles trade may pan out to be a huge mess. I want everyone there, but Moss is new and needs to build a chemistry with Ramsey, it's going to be hard to be a #1 when Ramsey prefers another WR over you. Also, know what an incentive based contract does for you when your career is ended by an unlucky hit? |
