Set it all aside -- Training Camp Begins

The offseason, with it's long and winding discussions, ends tomorrow for the Redskins. Set what ails you aside, and with the hope of a new day, a new year, a new coach, and a new optimism after last years debacle.

Talk about what you want to see from whom? What you need to see from a specific player. What would be the biggest disappointment in training camp.

Yes, even do you have your yearly pet project chosen yet.

Whatever it is, whoever's performance you want to praise or trash. Just remember it's all about the time on the field now. No off-season garbage in this thread.

Last year at this time I did a poll and was roundly criticized by GTripp for not including 0-8 wins. He was prescient, this year, no such poll, but I still would not put in 0-5 wins, and I think this team has a chance to put it all together, and win the division by the 14th game. It helps that I don't think the other teams will be good.

But that's looking ahead, right now it's time to see how this team comes together.

HTTR!!!

Special Teams. Good lord we where trash last year. That side of the ball can really change a game. I just want to see some passion this year.

I wanna see Moses make RT his bitch quickly. Mildly surprising but could happen.

I wanna see Seastrunk become the little water bug we need out of the backfield and on special teams.

I wanna see a wicked pass rush.

My biggest disappointment would be if RGIII looks like he did last year.

Re: Set it all aside -- Training Camp Begins

RG3 is the only thing that matters. Won't get an idea until the reg season, but is he reading defenses? Is he finally planting his feet / using good technique? Can he finally be accurate again? Will he make the right decisions vs blitzes? Will he finally take the blame for the bad plays? Will he finally be a leader when things are tough?

Everything else is not as important. But looking to see -- Gruden (?read option, leadership), safeties (will Clark be too old, will P.Thomas finally step up), Oline (RT battle, new center/guards), Dline (Will orakpo finally show up, was Tmurphy worth it), health (will Reed / KRob stay healthy?), ... those are my main questions.

Like any fan of the Redskins in July what I'm most interested in is the battle of Colt McCoy vs. Kirk Cousins

For me it all comes down to this. If RG3 plays very good to great QB then this offense can be every bit as good as any in the league. If not, and he plays poorly, all hell is going to break loose.

Re: Set it all aside -- Training Camp Begins

Kidding aside, I want to see how improved the special teams will be this year. I think last year was probably the worst display of effort from special teams I have seen in all of my 30+ years of watching football. Also hoping Crawford is able to make it back to return punts again.

I'm also going to be watching Phillip Thomas closely. Let's see if he can stay healthy. Can't wait to see how Seastrunk is going to perform. I hope he is able to work his way into being that 3rd down back that we've been looking for.

And of course, how is RGIII going to fair this year.

I was trying to come up with a less meaningful competition to sarcastically study and had thought the Nick Sundberg / Kyle Nelson battle for long snapper would suffice, however, Nelson was just released and that is now Sundberg's job.

There really are a lot of back end roster moves that are pretty interesting:
WR: Are Robinson/Hankerson's days numbered?
RB: Lache Sisboombah or Chris Thompson?
OLine: Who are the reserves? Polumbo, Compton, Gettis, LeRib ... It's all up in the air.
TE: Nothing to see here, moving on.

DLine: To me, it looks like the back end of the roster is set with Neild and Golston going.

LB: Who are the back-ups at ILB - Does someone supplant Robinson as the penciled in starter? Is Jenkins or Jackson the final OLB?

CB: Lots going on here - Crawford, Minnifield, E.J., who is staying who is going.

Safety: Does Rambo stick?

I'm looking forward to seeing how the RB group shakes up. Hoping Chris Thompson is 100% and balling. We seen what he could do last year, and I don't think Seastrunk will be ready to take a significant role as a change-of-pace back. Hoping our RB group ends up with: Morris, Helu, Thompson, Seastrunk, and Young. I don't think Royster adds anything special, and Redd is PS material, IMO.

O-line battles will be interesting. Particularly Long vs. Chester for me.

Also interesting to see how many LBs they'll keep. I'm thinking Orakpo, Kerrigan, Murphy, and Jenkins(if he plays STs well) at OLB. As for ILB, I'm thinking they'll keep the top 5: Riley, Robinson, Sharpton, Jordan, and Hayward. Or maybe the young guy Compton will impress enough to push Jordan or Hayward off the roster.

My yearly pet project? LOL. Nope, not chosen yet. :D

Yeah, but I think he's going to start camp on active/PUP, so he might not be practicing for a while. Though according to Rotoworld, he was doing okay at the end of minicamp last month, so perhaps he'll be playing sooner than expected. Clearly, he'll be a pivotal part of our offense next year, so we'd better keep our fingers crossed. :D

Hey, in my defense, Hankerson is no Pat White.

Re: Set it all aside -- Training Camp Begins

It's that time of year when everything is possible ... the slate is clean and IMO this staff will not have an agenda and everyone will be given a chance to show they can contribute and be able to help the others around them be better

The Redskins were hurt by the salary cap 'fiasco' and especially by not having great depth - it will take time but this franchise is in much better shape than the 3-13 record would indicate

RG3 has a coach and an OC that I think will find a way to help him make the transition to being a better NFL QB than he was given by Kyle and Mike - I think they thought they were helping him but it was short sighted - we have some great weapons on offense and these guys will find a way to help RG3 utilize them

I look for a much more aggressive defense than the conservative defense Mike and Jim used last season

Surely the Special Teams cannot be worse than what we saw - Forbath has to get the ball much deeper on kickoffs or he's not here

Just a reminder, isn't it THIS preseason that the NFL is going to mess around with the extra point attempts? I've already forgotten what they had proposed.

O should be OK. Gruden's O in Cin went from 18th to 6th from 2011 - 2013. RG3 will be on point, WRs are solid, OL and pass-pro from RB/TEs will be improved

Specials will improve, probably middle of the pack...not the disaster of last year.

D.....there's our challenge. Bowen and Hatcher on PUP, questions at ILB and in the secondary. And Haslett has not had a D ranked higher that 21st in the NFL since prior to 2004.

Based on our schedule, here's what I see now:

Likely Wins: Jax, NYG, Tenn, DAL at Home, Minn - Away
Likely Ls: Phi, AZ, DAL, SF, Ind, NYG - Away, SEA - Home
Toss-ups: TB, STL, Phi - Home, HOU - Away

Going with a split on the toss-ups, we're probably looking at 7-9. Rebuilding (again) sucks.

I hate your thinking on that. I feel like we had some good pick ups in the off season. BUT...... Shit your right rebuilding as always.

Re: Set it all aside -- Training Camp Begins

Mo Hurt on the PUP list. Based on what the WaPo says, it would seem he may be a long shot for the roster: "Hurt, according to Gruden, showed up to camp out of shape and must work to improve his physical state before receiving clearance to practice. Hurt – a seventh-round pick in 2011 – opened last training camp on the PUP list after spending the summer recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. The team put him on the regular season PUP list to start the year, and he wound up being moved to injured reserve late in the year after failing to provide a satisfactory body of work during the three-week practice evaluation period. Hurt spent the offseason program as a fourth-string right tackle, but entered the league at guard. He has starter Tyler Polumbus, rookie Morgan Moses and second-year pro Tom Compton ahead of him on the depth chart."

7th rounder so neither surprising or much of a loss (which is saying something given our O-line woes). I have to say, I cannot understand guys showing up out of shape. If your job is that of professional athlete, seriously? For a guy like this, it is tempting to just cut him right away and send a message.

I just hope we stay healthy. I'm not going to get too high or low on anything that happens before week one. Last year we DOMINATED preseason. I don't just mean we won games, but we crushed teams w/o RG3 and I was all smiles going into the season and we're 3-13. I'm hoping to see some young guys (Moses, Thomas) possibly beat out some veterans, but we'll see. The fun can finally begin!

Rambo.... i'd like to see him make it through 4 preseason games tackling with his head up and not getting 15 yard penalties. That would be a big step up...

At this point yeah the secondary help would be great, but the front seven is where this defense has to win.

Defense. Defense. Defense. Special Teams.

I believe the offense will do well for the most part, but everything still rides on defense and special teams at this point.

My "project" to watch this summer will be Brandon Jenkins. Guy has a ton of talent so let's see if he can put it all together and move up the depth chart.

I disagree, Jenkins is 3rd string at best, and I doubt he makes the team. He is to slow for OLB (5.0 40), and to small for DE.
