Like General MacArthur, I Shall Return...

Folks:

I am going to be “off the air” for a short while. On Thursday, 14 April, I will enjoy the thrill of a cardiac catheterization on the advice of two physicians. You can probably discern the real reason behind their recommendation here; they want to find out if I really do have a heart!

In January of this year, I had a head-to-toe physical – with some other invasive and not so enjoyable examination processes too. I can summarize what the conclusions were in non-medical terminology for you in the following way:

I am old and I am fat. I have the opportunity to change one of those things.

Since January, I have lost 25 lbs; don’t worry, there’s plenty more where that came from. And I have been exercising and doing lots of things that I know are good for me but I wasn’t doing nearly enough of them. The cardiac catheterization is exploratory because an echocardiogram result was not exactly the way the textbooks say it ought to be.

This is an outpatient procedure and in 95% of the cases, the patient goes home and sleeps in his own bed that night. I'm told by others who have had this procedure done that the recovery challenge is in your groin where they insert the catheter into the femoral artery. Supposedly, that healing process makes walking "uncomfortable" for several days. Whatever...

I’ll probably be "up and running" again sometime during the week of 18 April. Talk to you then…

Good luck! Having been under the knife a few times, I know those damn tubes can make things uncomfortable afterwords. Relax and get well.

Best of luck to you, SC! I'm sure they'll find a heart in there somewhere-- they'll just find one that ticks to the beat of a different drummer!

My mom had a heart catheterization a year or so ago, and she's doing fine now. One of my mom's cousins has had something like nine of them done, and she's still up and about and doing okay.

My mom did have some difficulty with a pretty bad hematoma where they inserted the catheter. That was, according to her, the worst part of the recovery. It just depends on how careful the medical techs/nurses are when they do the catheterization and when they remove it. If they do it correctly, there shouldn't be that much bruising.

Anyway, best wishes SC, and I look forward to seeing your well-argued, contrarian viewpoint gracing our forums again soon! :biggthump

Good luck, Sports. We'll have to try to keep our unbridalled enthusiasm in check while you're gone! Thankfully, all the skins news seems bad right now, so we won't get carried away.

Feel better soon!

Good luck SC, if you ask nicely they may even cut you open and carve 36 on your heart. So Mr. Taylor always stays close!

Seriously though, I hope you recover quickly and you're back by draft time!

That's absolutely the truth!
Even if I wanted to try, TAFKAS, I have a big test next week!

SC- I'm an ER nurse. I can tell you, outpatient cadiac caths are really not all that big of a deal. The proceedure is scary and can be uncomfortable, and the groin stick hurts, but you should be fine. Good luck.

Re: Like General MacArthur, I Shall Return...

hey SC, i've actually had that done to me when i was 16... four times... its not bad, except the nurse's assistant shaves the area, then the nurse takes a turn, then the lab tech tries to shave closer, then the surgeon tries again ;)

either way, its not too bad, i never had to spend a night in the hospital, you're lower area will stink of iodine for a week though... they couldn't conk me for any of the procedures, but most people get drugs and sleep through the whole thing.

Re: Like General MacArthur, I Shall Return...

Well, they did find a heart in there. For the record, the doctor said it was the darkest one he ever saw and must be filled with bad feelings.

He tried to inject me with some of the "milk of human kindness" but my body rejected it.

They did find a 70% blockage in my right coronary artery and worked on that with an angioplasty (a small balloon on the end of the catheter that they expand and contract several times to squeeze away the stuff that creates the blockage). I spent a night in the hospital and feel fine now.

By the way, in case anyone was wondering, there have been no breakthroughs in hospital food recently.

Ah, you ARE feeling better ;). Good to have you back, Sports. The site was out of action for a while while you were gone. I figured it was because things were getting too touchy-feely here and the board itself couldn't take it.

SC and the Warpath back on the same day, not too shabby.
