Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things noted..
Redskins.com | Depth Chart
Chris baker lined up at end with Cofeild in the middle still, i kind of wish the swapped. Chris thompson listed as 3rd string, pushing the rest to the bubble it would seem. Not sure with his health and dropsies but, he is electrifying. Moss listed as second string behind Pierre, Grant opposite of him. This I like. Breeland listed as second string corner, pending his suspension, i like it. Forbath still listed as our kicker, hope he sticks around and can improve on kickoffs. Rambo listed as second string, glad he is improving but Thomas being pushed back a few spots isnt encouraging for him.. I know this is nothing close to finalized, but with one preseason game left in which we most likely wont see sarters at alot of key positions... i like some o f the indications i have seen right now and imo it goes hamd and.hand with what most of us have been talking about and seeing so far this preseason/camp. Thoughts? |
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
Biggers and Treeland ahead of Tracy Porter...thats an intreeging development
|
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
I agree its almost as tracy hasnt even been on the team.
|
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
I don't know the practice squad rules, but some of these vets like Tracy Porter can't go to the practice squad. Seems like its limited to younger guys.

Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
Like I said before the skins signed Porter, it's a mistake. Rather keep Crawford or Minnifield. Phillip Thomas hurt the same foot as last year, MRI coming today.

Malcolm Kelley part two. |
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
Chris Thompson as 3rd string can't possibly be a reality. Look for either Seastrunk or Redd.
Although Royster has shown some moves, I wish to God they'd just cut him already. |
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
Porter isnt a cap burden is he? He adds depth because you never know.

Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
I would like to see some action @ the RB slot. Never been a big fan of Helu, I can't ever remember seeing him aggressively finish up a run. He has speed, but not run away speed like Sistrunk, and like Thompson has injury issues.

This takes a too-narrow view of the RB position. Helu is by far our best pass-catching back and a strong blocker in blitz pickup. Keeping him on the roster is a necessity, he's the clear-cut #2. |

To be honest, I think he's been pretty sloppy this summer in pass blocking. |
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
Yeah everything I have read has basically been that none of our options have been any good in pass protection other than Royster
|
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
BTW...I don't get why pass protection for RBs is so hard. But I never played the position so what do I know?

Some of it is just pure physics: a 220 lb. guy trying to stop a charging 290 lb. guy. It takes a good understanding and execution of leverage. But what do I know. I'm still trying to figure out how pro hoops players can suck at free throws. |
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
Seems like an opportunity to bring by a certain Alumni and have him teach proper RB blocking.
Portis can't be too busy with other things, right? |
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
s omar brown was cut by the ravens. everyone in the organization seemed to be high on him and the cut came as some what of a surprise.
he has been with the team for a few years so im guessing they cut him now instead of waiting until the 53 to give him a chance to sign on with a new team asap. i hope we add a vet FS to play behind clark and who can step in and play SS if rambo isnt ready. Portis can't be too busy with other things, right?
I would love to have Portis on the staff. He's one of my all time favorite NFL players. |

Portis can't be too busy with other things, right?
He not only knew how to pass protect but he had the desire to be the best at it. Does any of these other guys have the desire to be a good pass protector? I don't think Portis can give any of them his desire. I'm not satisfied with any of the backup RB's beyond Helu. Chris Thompson is supposed to be explosive but he hasn't proven it. He's pretty much useless between the tackles and he can't pass protect. Royster has had a good preseason but we all know that he is pedestrian. Redd looks like he has potential but he's not ready. Seastrunk is very raw. Other than Helu, I really wouldn't mind if the Skins cut all of them and picked up somebody else. |
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
Well, if the Merriweather suspension doesnt change we will see Rambo starting. Gruden said that in his press conference.

With what he has shown this camp/preseason and his endorsement by the coaching staff and players...he deserves it. This BM suspension silver lining could be Rambo emergence as a servicable safety. We just dont have alot of depth behind either guys, need to add someone imo. |

This probably means Gruden is a little doubtful that the news on Thomas will be good. I don't think he would declare Rambo the outright starter at SS if he thought Thomas would be able to play, especially since SS isn't Rambo's natural position. |
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
As to running back, I think Royster has made the most of his chances. Not sure if he played with the first team but I think he has done well in his blocking assignments and catching passes out of the backfield. I initially wrote him off as "pedestrian" also but think his pedestrian play has outperformed Helu's sloppy play.
No, he is not a potential "playmaker," but he is a potential "yard-getter/block-maker" which is more than you can say for Helu at this point. I don't know what's been happening in practice but it seems to me that Royster has gotten more snaps than an afterthought should. It's hard to say goodbye to Helu's potential speed but it's not like we don't have speed elsewhere. If we need the yards, need the blitz picked up, who do you trust more based on what you have seen so far in preseason: Helu or Royster? I'm thinking Royster. I say that fully understanding his limitations. Still, better to move the chains and preserve the opportunity for someone to make a big play than to blow the read/block/run and punt away. I really think Royster has a shot and that he is in a competition with Helu - one or the other makes it. Similarly, Thompson and Seastrunk are an either or duo also. One makes it, one goes to our PS - although if Thompson doesn't make it, he may just be cut outright. I think Redd is PS material this year. Just how I am seeing it right now. Before training camp, I thought Helu a lock and Royster a goner. Just not as sure of that right now. I think Royster had a long way to go to even make it a competition but that he has done just that. I will still be surprised if Royster makes it and Helu is cut - just not shocked. Also, if Helu is cut, I bet he is claimed pretty damn quick. Not so for Royster. |
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
Royster making the final roster wouldn't be a big surprise, but Helu not making it would be.
Unless Thompson has a huge game tonight, I think they might waive him and hope he clears so he can be sent to the practice squad. Playmakers can't make plays if they're at home all the time. Staying healthy and how well he plays on special teams tonight will probably play a significant part in deciding if he stays. Seastrunk, meanwhile, has been solid, but most of his playing time so far has come in the 4th quarters of games. I hope he gets a lot of playing time tonight. I don't think both Royster and Redd make the final roster since neither have big speed... one or none. Obviously I don't know how Gruden will decide on which backs to keep, but if Royster and Redd are battling for a spot, I think the more experienced Royster wins. Redd is waived and hopefully sent to the squad. If I had to guess, I would say the final roster carries these 5: Morris, Young, Helu, Seastrunk, and Royster. |

I would definitely keep Thompson over Royster if I knew he would stay healthy. |
Re: Updated Depth Chart... some interesting things note..
So it sounds like Thomas' foot re-injury wasn't serious. Whew.
