A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?

Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
I am starting to have a hard time believing that we will make that move -- especially if the rumors that we are going to keep haslett are true.
|
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
This is a huge offseason coming up. Smith has been known to be a very competent general manager for the Chargers. He's responsible for putting all that talent on the field that enabled San Diego to compete under Marty and Norv. After the failings and missteps of Bruce Allen he would be wise to step down from that GM post and promote Smith.

Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
I didn't even know he was already part of the franchise?
|

A.J. Smith was hired as a senior executive after the 2011 season. |
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
Wonder if in talks about the team, between Smith, Snyder, and Allen, since 2011, maybe Smith was proven right about some things?
|

There's no telling how much input Smith had if at all in the players that the Redskins drafted, scouted, or signed in free agency. I would think Scott Campbell and Morocco Brown had more say in the scouting and drafting of players than Smith had. Of course up until last December Mike Shanahan had full control of the Redskins roster. |
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
AJ Smith is not the answer. I don't have issues with his talent evaluating, but I don't like him as our GM. We need to go out and get that Eric DeCosta kind of guy. A guy who's waiting in the wings to prove himself. AJ's ego will prevent him from being the GM we should have, as noted with his dealings with his own players in San Diego.
Mind you, this is the same mother fucker that fired Marty after a 14-2 season. |

I've heard something about that. I don't know exactly what happened in SD. |
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
I think this would be a step in the right direction. Perhaps there would be better options than Smith, but at least he's had previous success as a GM. I don't know what Allen's exact role was with Shanahan, but I think those years coupled with this year is more than enough evidence that he doesn't have it. Promote Smith, and just as importantly, let him do his job.

So the question is... Who would you rather gave as the GM... Smith or Allen? Give me Smith every day, and twice on Sundays... |

Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
I think the absolute scariest thing going forward will be if the Cowboys somehow win the Super Bowl. Not just for the obvious reasons, but rather the real tragedy would be for Snyder to be able to look at Jerry Jones holding a Lombardi trophy and think, 'maybe being hands on isn't exactly a bad thing.'

2012 Smith has been pretty influential as far as the draft the last two years. He's already on our payroll, I got no issue with giving him more official control. Is send Scott Campbell packing |
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
In 1974 he had a tryout as a player for the Redskins

Is send Scott Campbell packing
Is that a good thing? Our 2014 draft class, outside of Breeland, was a bust this year (though I think Grant will be a good WR going forward & Murphy can contribute but isn't special) and 2013 is not looking stellar either. Amerson & Reed didn't step forward and Thomas & Thompson are just seeing the field. 6 of the 15 players picked are no longer on the roster or practice squad. If he gets full and total control over football ops, then I may be intrigued but if not, it's same old same old. I agree on Campbell as well as the scouting staff. Hopefully if he's hired, he can influence Snyder to give the scouting department some legitimacy in terms of investment and respect. |

Lol. He's not only been one of the best players on defense, but is obviously a future star in the making. What I like most about him is he's constantly in that film room grinding away trying to get better. The front office doesn't get many right but they nailed it with Breeland. |
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
Smith let some good players walk out of San Diego. I'd prefer that they go get a young up and coming guy who's been in the trenches for several years. Get Newsome's right hand man. Baltimore has about a solid organization as there is. We need someone that comes from a winning organization.

Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
How would we all grade Shack Harris, George Kokinis, and Phil Savage as General Managers?
|
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
If newsome leaves the ravens and joins the skins I will have a ticket connection. My lady is friends with his daughter .... The other newsome in scout dept, not Ozzie.
Smoot - is it true aj smith doesn't like our 3 qbs? |
How would we all grade Shack Harris, George Kokinis, and Phil Savage as General Managers?
Only one that rings a bell is Savage, he seems ok. After looking up the other 2, Harris is buddy buddy with Doug Williams so that is kinda wierd and Kokinis was a GM for like half a year with the Browns. SS, if these guys are being talked about as possible GM, any insight to positives and negatives with these as executives in the front office? Any significant streaks of these guys grabbing positive streaks of talent? I honestly dont think the Ravens have done great in the talent department as of late...I think Harris in Detroit has the most to brag about in the way of team building, but still could be better imo. |
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
Chico. None are being talked about. My point was just that all were Newsome disciples yet none turned their franchises around when they became GMs. All solid football people, but I don't know why we just assume DeCosta is the answer just because he's with the Ravens
I don't know how AJ Smith feels about the QBs anymore than what's been said publicly |

Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
I think having AJ as GM could be a great move on paper. AJ can pick talent, his issue was the money part of it. Bruce is a great organizer and can manage the cap. If they could work together they make the perfect GM. People's ability to work together is what makes them champions.

Yeah, I agree....Smith's son is a Redskins scout. Smith does indeed have the eye for talent and more talent is what this team needs. |
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
I couldn't give a fig about A.J. Smith's title.
The question is, does he or Bruce have control? If the answer is Bruce, then changing titles changes nothing. AJ Smith assembled some very talented teams without having Snyder's checkbook, which could alter which players he keeps. We could do worse at GM. |
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
Guys..how about all the talk as long as Snyder owns the team the Skins will never be good?? 90% of every post on redskins forums all lead back to the same issue…the OWNER..so do you really think any of this will work as long as Snyder owns the team..just asking ..
|
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
Do the reports that discuss Smith as a west coast guy, wanting to interact with the team remotely in more of a consulting role have any credibility?

Yes....the owner has nothing to do with assembly of the team or coaching. Ownership has nothing to do with the play on the field either....the team has suffered because of Snyder's incompetent meddling with the firings of Norv and Marty but the team has made the playoffs four times since he's owned it....it's not like the Redskins have had a bunch of 2-14 seasons with Snyder as owner.....we could be a GM away from returning to the glory years... |

True... If he ever hired a real GM and let him do his job... To date, he has not done this... I hope he does, but I am not holding my breath.... |

Snyder was hands off when Marty had control of the team and personnel....Snyder also didn't meddle when Joe Gibbs was drafting the players.....when Allen and Shanahan arrived he was hands off with them running things as well....I'm all in for A.J. Smith becoming the GM.....we need someone who can look at the entire team and spot where all of the weaknesses are and get the right personnel in that can turn those weaknesses into great strengths....Smith can do that... |

snyder was NOT completely hands off when gibbs was here. he and vinny and gibbs sat around and talked about personnel moves, and later on al saunders and grilliams also got in on the act. he did give them deference though, but he was in on the conversation. he was also very hands on with getting griffin, though i can't remember any other examples during shanahan. |
Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?
I say the Redskins bring back Morocco Brown and make him the GM, he is a hot candidate out there and knows this team well.
