June 1st Cuts.

Think we're expecting to grab a WR off the waiver wire (any idea of some who may be cut?) or do you think we're set with our receiving corps? While I'm high on jacobs and McCants, I really don't like the rest of the receivers. Especially the contract we're going to give Moss.

Re: June 1st Cuts.

What about our June 1st cuts. Could we be looking at dropping or trading some guys like Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwrite, and Mike Barrow?

I wouldnt mind seeing us trying to trade them away for any kind of draft pick. Anything is better than nothing. Even 7th rounders.

Re: June 1st Cuts.

I look for the June 1st cuts to include Mark Brunell. Despite claims to the contrary, he doesn't have a place in the organization after the drafting of Jason Campbell.

The way that they are already looking at trading Tim Hasselbeck there is no way they keep him over Brunell. Gibbs loves his vets, and even though this guy stunk it up for us last year, I think he hangs on for one more season before he gets the chop.

There will be too much money invested at the position with Brunell and two first rounders. There will also be enough turmoil with two first-rounders on the team.

Gibbs does love veterans, but Ramsey has nearly 30 starts now. He isn't a rookie, and he doesn't need to be coddled. The Campbell selection proves that Gibbs isn't afraid to push his QB's.

Re: June 1st Cuts.

I think we keep Gardner. I think that is why we DID NOT draft a receiver, even in the later rounds! We are going to have A LOT of money tied up in quarterbacks which will hamper our signing ANY June 1 cuts, unless Brunell reworks his contract AGAIN. We can't cut him, although I wish we could, because the cap hit, coupled with Coles' would be way TOO GREAT. Also, look for Detroit to cut Rogers at WR. Too much money for three first round receivers.

Re: June 1st Cuts.

LOL...Cut Charles Rogers. LMAO. The Lions could get a 1st round pick for rogers if they put him on the blocks...NO QUESTION!! Wow....are you related to Danny??

Daseal 04-25-2005 12:10 AM

Re: June 1st Cuts.

They'd certainly trade Rogers. If they cut him, I'd send Redskisn one that second. Though he's had injury problems he's an amazing receiver.

I don't see either happening, but it would be nice!

skinsguy 04-25-2005 12:32 AM

Re: June 1st Cuts.

I will be surprised if they cut Brunell, I don't expect that to happen. Did I read somewhere where the Skins' resigned Cartwright? I would have thought for sure he would be gone. I think for McCants, this year is do or die. If he can't prove to be a difference maker...maybe not even in the pre-season...he'll probably be gone. I believe we might keep Jacobs for one more year, but this year it's do or die for him. We'll keep Thrash for special teams reason and I think he's a solid WR off the bench.

I'm interested to see what happens with Gardner. I don't see us keeping him, but then again, ya never know.

JoeRedskin 04-25-2005 12:53 AM

Re: June 1st Cuts.

The Skins are not gonna cut Brunnell. Doesn't anyone remember the discussions about his cap hit?? To cut him before June 1st '06 is completely destructive to our cap. If the Skins cut him, they are going to have to cut half the damn roster to get back under the cap.

Re: June 1st Cuts.

Az Hakim will probably be cut, but I would think he would winde up back with the Rams, that is where he had all his success, a perfect example of a talented player doing nothing if he's in the wrong situation.

morton, barrow, sellers, hasselback, are all gone.maybe even the invisible man mccants.

Not to start anything, but you say that Az Hakim is a talented player doing nothing because he is in the wrong situation. Then you come out and lable Portis as a system back. It seems by the tone of your posts you kinda of sympathize with Az Hakim who clearly was "system WR", but you have like a "I hate Portis" tone when you lable him as a system back.

Atleast Portis is talented enough to still be a factor on gameday when he is in the so called "wrong situation". Where as with Az Hakim, what has he done since he left the Rams?

Re: June 1st Cuts.

I think Sellers stays. He is a special team stand out, and Gibbs knows we need help there.

FRPLG 04-25-2005 09:24 AM

Re: June 1st Cuts.

I think the main target for a cut /retire is Barrow. If his knee doesn't hold up, and why would we think it would it would, then he has to be gone. I'd say there's a better than 50% chance he retires. Hasslebeck may end up getting cut since why would anyone trade for him when the Skins are clearly going to have to cut him barring an injury that allows them to IR him. I think Rock is gone. As well as McCants.
You have to look at the makeup now and guys like Rock and McCants have no place on the team. Right now Sellers plays in front of Cartwright and the new guy is certainly going to make the team before him. That leaves a potential third FB spot(do they even keep 3?) for Rock or the other new guy. The other new guy is cheaper and it will cost no cap space to cut Rock. He's gone. McCants is in the same boat for sure now that Gardner is staying(presumably). The WRs are Patten, Moss, Thrash, Jacobs, Gardner. There is certainly a chance they grab someone of the waiver wire post June 1. There's no way they keep more than 6 WRs and whose spot does he take? He's not getting a spot in front any of the first four I listed and there is no way the Skins will simply cut Gardners if they wouldn't trade him because they didn't get enough value. That would be more than retarded. McCants for this team. Those are probably the biggest name cuts but we'll see as always.

Say Gardner does get it together this year, you all think we'll shop him or resign him?

FRPLG 04-25-2005 10:37 AM

Re: June 1st Cuts.

I see no reason why they wouldn't try adnf resign him if he steps it up and becomes a valuable part fo the receiving corp. I would think with the way they ahve tried to tear him he would eb amenable too.

TheMalcolmConnection 04-25-2005 10:39 AM

Re: June 1st Cuts.

It would be nice if he could finally get it together. I'm just worried because he's had ENOUGH time to get it together. Good thing is, we set a precedent with Smoot/Pierce so that Gardner would know we won't overpay him.

Re: June 1st Cuts.
Say Gardner does get it together this year, you all think we'll shop him or resign him?
Well, I think the resigning part would have to come first, but to truly see if Gardner can rekindle the magic of his rookie season, we would have to see him for the whole season. Maybe to sign him with a one year league minimum deal....that's better than sittin on your rump watchin' football. This could be his year to say I am going to prove all these teams including the Redskins that I come to play...maybe by season's end the Redskins will have a change of heart, but thinking in more terms of a realist, he's probably gonna get cut.

TheMalcolmConnection 04-25-2005 11:38 AM

Re: June 1st Cuts.

That would be a shame. I would think that since he has something to prove, they might try to fit him into the offense.

June Cuts

All this talk about Gardiner's future makes me wonder who will we be cutting after June 1st.

Gardiner would save us 2.7 million, which I think is the #1 reason for why we should cut him. If Michael Barrow's knee doesn't progress, he would be another cut, which would save us an additional 2.1 million. Finally, both Cory Raymer and Chad Morton could be on their way out - each saving us about a million.

The total for these four cuts would be around 7 million, which would leave us with 8 million or so in cap space for this season.

That money could be used to resign Santana Moss (to a reasonable contract - please God, just this once, lets not overpay for a guy); our rookies; and possibly fill holes at DE and WR with other June cuts.

Crap - I just heard we won't cut Gardiner.

That blows. I think he is so inconsistent and is taking time away from younger guys who can catch over 50% of the balls that hit them in the hands.

wonder if the lions would trade haz hakim to the skins straight up for gardner?

Before the draft, I'd agree with you, but it seems to me that we just drafted not one, but two replacements for Sellers......maybe one too many penalties for coach Joe?

Well, I think they resigned Sellers for a couple more years ( i could be wrong). Maybe Gibbs wants to expand his role this year?

So if Gardner stays will he be # 2 as of now? I dont think moss is any more reliable. To me Thrash is our best receiver, and then Jacobs.

I heard on Sports Talk 980 that we are planning on keeping Gardiner.

F- Moss - he already annoys me because he is trying to position himself for an extended contract when he hasn't proven one thing in this league.

You may be right....especially considering at least one of those guys (the later pick) may end up on the practice squad this year.

thrash MIGHT be our 4th best receiver if that right now. he couldn't even get 1000 yards with a MUCH better QB throwing to him as a #1.
