I also read the King comments both before and after the draft and felt much the same way as you SSF. BUT - Just to play devil's advocate:


King is not bashing the Skins for taking a player of Campbell's ability - He is bashing the apparent conflict created by choosing Campbell when the Skin's have:

1) A good young QB in Ramsey - who must now, yet again, fend off/deal with a new challenger for his job. In his 4 years here, Ramsey has consistently had to deal w/ 2nd guessing towards his ability to be an NFL QB and the leader of this team (remember - Spurrier wanted to trade him b4 he even got to play). Given that Gibbs' actions seem to contradict Gibbs' words concerning his confidence in Ramsey, and if the whole world is saying that Ramsey is crazy to believe Gibbs doesn't want to replace him, this move may just push him over the edge and ruin him as QB. Remember, most of the NFL scouts think Ramsey could be a solid QB - good intangibles, strong arm, smart - that, in the right system, could be a very good QB

2) Given the existence and potential of the Ramsey - why in the hell trade away next year's first if your not going to address this year's needs? Who is your goto receiver? Patten, Moss? - I don't think so. How about an end who can pressure the QB? Players who will likely start, and possibly star, in this league were available at 25. This front office just can't get it right.

So, essentially, while thinking Campbell would be a great QB, King is bashing the FO for creating unneccesary controversy at the team's most important position and for failing to address the areas perceived as real needs by the media and fans.

I wouldn't say it's controversy right now. Gibbs made it clear that Ramsey is the guy.

But in drafting Campbell he is also getting an insurance policy for the future. That way, Ramsey knows he has the job but if he stinks it up, he's gone.

If Williams works out for the Lions, they will have one of the best WR duos in the league.

One who praised Jason Campbell prior to draft day is now laughing at the Skins for taking him


I'm not one to whine much about media bias against the Redskins. Yes, there is a lot of negative reporting about the Redskins. It's hard to find a Skins draft grade out there above what I got in high school physics (and there's a reason I'm not a rocket scientist). My line of reasoning has been based on the fact that until they make the playoffs again or at least post a couple of consecutive winning seasons, the critics will be out there.

Sometimes, however, the critics get caught in a biased moment. When something they said in a context that doesn't involve the Redskins suddenly does pertains to Danny Snyder's team, the positive spin becomes inoperative and turns negative, or vice versa depending on the situation.

Read the following statement and tell me who made it:
Campbell looked really good -- so good that you find yourself wondering: How can a scout watch this kid and not label his arm, athleticism and field presence all first-round gifts?
Was it Joe Gibbs or Vinny Cerrato? Auburn coach Tommy Tubberville? Some homer Redskins blogger out there?

No, it was said in this article by Peter King. Yes, the very same Peter King who annually draws the ire of Redskins fans when he leads to charge to block Art Monk's entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The very same Sports Illustrated writer who hasn't had anything good to say about the Redskins since the Norv Turner era.

To say that he is ga-ga over Campbell in the article, which was published two weeks before the draft on April 11, would be an understatement. You have to click over to the third page before you find the nut of the story:
Next I watched Campbell. My first question was: Where's this guy been hiding? The simple answer: Behind Brown and a very big Cadillac. Campbell is 6-4 3/4 and 230 pounds. His pass-drop is quick and textbook perfect. He sets up well in the pocket, bouncing athletically until he finds his receivers. He never flinches against a pass rush, moving deftly this way or that to avoid traffic. He throws on the run better than Rodgers or Campbell. On one throw against Kentucky last fall, he rolled out from his 46 to his right, then flicked a sideline throw 19 yards downfield for an in-stride completion. That's the kind of throw he'll be asked to make 100 times a year in the NFL.
He concludes in regards to what quarterback the 49ers should draft among Alex Smith, Aaron Rogers and Campbell:
I hope they take another look at Campbell. I sure would if I were Mike Nolan.
But, hey, if you're Joe Gibbs, you're a fool to make the trade for the 25th pick in the draft in order to take a quarterback who is in the writer's view an equal to the #1 overall pick, according to King.

On Monday on PTI, King literally laughed at the Redskins for drafting Campbell, saying that it was obvious that the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing. He made absolutely no mention of the fact that he thought that Campbell was Smith's equal. If he did, then that would have blown the whole media template established that the Redskins are the gang that can't shoot straight.

If you're trading a couple of mid-rounders for a shot to get an guy who's as good as the best quarterback in the draft, that's a pretty shrewd deal. That's something that, to the Peter Kings of the world, the Redskins can't make. So, just like in the Nixon White House, previous statements become inoperative. Campbell's talents are first-round gifts when another team might be looking at him. When the Redskins take him in the first, they're bumblers.

We've always suspected such things, but now we have the goods on at least one of them.

I feel the exact same way about DET drafting Williams. I think it was a rediculous pick for them; unless they trade one of their three headed WR's. Obviously it would be Rogers, but I thought it was a stupid move for them. THey need more help on the defensive side of the football.

You mean, Peter King, a professional sports writer is saying the SAME THING WE ARE? Campbell is a good/great player, perhaps the best QB this year, but that the Redskins shouldn't have picked him. Let's burn an effigy of him on FedEx field.

A couple things to remember about Peter King in regards to the Redskins..
#1 he is an admitted Giants fan.. He lives in NJ, I think grew up in CT, consistently talks about how great Barber, Strahan, etc. are while never giving complete credit to Washington or even Philly.. He speaks in glowing terms about Mc Nabb, Andy Ried, the Eagles FO, but he will always temper it with a shot about T.O., Tra Thomas, etc.. We know his continued ralings against the Redskins since they fired Norv Turner and his anti Monk stance. He occassionaly says something good, but I recall last year during a dead time in the NFL's offseason in his MMQB he took a shot like 'We haven't heard from Daniel Snyder in a few weeks, maybe his hand is taking a break from signing bonus checks' or something like that.. Completely out of nowhere a shot at the Skins..

#2 his all time favorite coach is Bill Parcells.. He delights in the fact that Parcells is a thorn in Gibbs side. He has praised everything that Parcells did.. It's like that beer commercial.. Trading for Drew Henson-BRILLIANT! Picking up Vinny Testaverde-BRILLIANT! Signing Drew Bledsoe-BRILLIANT! Trading for Quincy Morgan-BRILLIANT! Taking a dump before practice instead of afterwards-BRILLIANT! The guy is so far up Parcells ass if the Tuna stopped suddenly all you would see is a spilled cup of Starbucks coffee and King's feet sticking out.. While I don't think his hatred is as prevelant as Pastabelly

Gibbs has made it clear that Ramsey is the guy, RIGHT NOW. But drafting a qb, especially when our offense was so putrid last year, really just creates more drama than necessary.

As for Detroit drafting Williams, at that point how can you pass him up? Rogers breaks his collarbone every year, and Az-Hakim wasn't working out and Williams is a potential star.

Hahahahaha... a friend I were lauging about that. Poor Rogers collarbone seriously breaks EVERY year. I know it's tough luck to break that and it doesn't take much, but holy shit, two times already.
