Quarterback Hype
If we're in the Mariota business for real we could use a dedicated thread.
Craziness.... I hope Chip Kelly gets uber fleeced after all this. re: Quarterback Hype
I just dont see it happening...think this is smoke. FO is probably giving some media peeps some false info.
|
re: Quarterback Hype
I'll slit my wrist if we draft another spread run first QB. Probably a smoke screen.
|
re: Quarterback Hype
I agree. This Skins-Mariota stuff is either smoke or pointless fodder for the 24 hours news cycle.
The league has caught up with the spread QB who cannot read defenses. IMO Jason Cole is right when he says that most folks would prefer Bradford to Mariota: NFL Rumors: Teams prefer Sam Bradford over Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston - Bleeding Green Nation |
re: Quarterback Hype
One thing PFT points out, if Scot McC shows up to Oregon Pro Day tomorrow then maybe this has legs. Keim isnt shooting this down, saying this is McC call, not Bruce/not Jay's. You know who's gonna be the most pissed off owner ever if this would happen..??
RG3 would have to be moved immediately as well. |

re: Quarterback Hype
SM has to do his due diligence and I'd expect him to be there. The Redskins are trying to get more value for that 5th pick.

Love it....gotta' let Philly or whoever think he is our guy |
Re: Quarterback Hype
I think this is us stirring up trade interest for the No. 5 pick. There isn't many quarterbacks and the jets pick behind us. Seems like it would be one of the spots you may need to jump to. I'm not sure which team would think about it anymore but I still think this is fodder
|
Re: Quarterback Hype
Hmmm, interesting...Clayton just said that Snyders has been pretty much hands off since the Shanahan days (Sheehan asked him how they could get rid of RG3 and pick Mariota with Snyder).
If the team had made some OL acquisitions (i.e. Bulaga), I'd be okay with this. We're not built right now to support a rookie QB. |

If we know it is a smoke screen pretty sure Philly does too. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
I seen a theory somewhere(ES/Twitter I think) that the Raiders had this leaked to drum up more interest for the #4 pick.

We don't. See John Clayton where he categorically proclaims that if available at #5, we take him........... |
Re: Quarterback Hype
And if Mariota has been Kellys Holy Grail all along he cant afford to shrug it off.
I take the 1st round swap and their 2nd and 4th. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
What if Chip wants to get Mariota by trading Bradford...to us?
Example: Philly gets pick # 5 We get pick #20 Sam Bradford Jason Kelce or Brandon Graham or Zach Ertz / their #2 pick |
Re: Quarterback Hype
What if Chip wants to get Mariota by trading Bradford...to us?
Maybe he also wants Alfred Morris... Lots of 1st and 2nd round picks he wants to trade all for his boy and Alfred Morris. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
There is currently more smoke than in Cheech's 64 Impala.
Do you think we would get that much for the 5th? I could see a swap of firsts and Bradford.
Maybe not. Just musing. But 20th to 5th is a huge jump and Chip REALLY wants to make that jump, so no matter what, we should fleece them. For our side, what if RGIII '15 looks like RGIII '14? We'll need a starter. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
If Mariota is there - I believe the Redskins should and will take him. Consensus from draft scouting experts is Mariota is a top 10 player on their big boards.
The only thing that prevents this is - the investment in RGIII. Here's the best thing to do to get around that - keep RGIII. And if RGIII changes and improves then great. You now have a good qb and another potentially good young one on the same roster. But if quarterback is currently a hole on the team, then the decision is easy - draft a potentially better option if the option is available. Or you can keep hoping that RGIII turns it around - which doesn't look likely in the immediate future. RGIII doesn't appear he wants to change - he thinks it's something outside of what he's doing. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
And with the thought that this is a smokescreen - I think it's more likely it's the opposite. I think Gruden announcing RGIII in February that he was #1 going into next season - was a smokescreen for their interest in drafting Mariota.
Because if you compare them, which one really makes more sense considering the current state of the quarterback position. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
Mariota will be the backup plan to the likely event that RGIII doesn't improve again with his decision-making skills and pocket awareness. Just like Caepernick was the backup plan to Alex Smith in San Francisco and Russell Wilson was to Flynn in Seattle.

Yeah we don't have that luxury. And kap and wilson were not number 5 overall pics. |

I wouldn't call trying to draft a potentially good quarterback when you are lacking at that position - a luxury. But I guess if we don't have that the only thing we have left is hope. Personally, I don't even have that any more. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
And just because it was the wrong decision to invest so many draft picks to get RGIII, you shouldn't continue to hamstring yourself and your team by not trying to fix the quarterback position, if you have a good chance to. If you don't continue to try, then you're giving up on the most important position on the team. And you're compounding your biggest problem.
|
Re: Quarterback Hype
I'm not saying to give up on RGIII, but give yourself a better chance with another viable option.

Re: Quarterback Hype
noooooo. i dont think were truly in that buisness lol
we cant live in this league with 3rd stringers starting on the Oline and secondary. We have talent here, a bum here, ok here, a bum there. too many weak spots and average fillers on defense. let rg get one year where he feels like his job isnt on the line. kills a players confidence. some it helps. some it just irritates and gets in theyre head and they play worse. nobody can relate from a real life scenario?..no?..okie. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
I'm still kind of in disbelief that after everything that we've seen from RG3, how can prevailing thought be to not give up on him yet? I understand that we paid a king's ransom for him - but like some here have said - we have a chance to fix our mistake...

There is certainly no harm in having RGIII here this season even if we were to draft Mariota. Drafting Mariota might just light a fire under him. I truly don't care who our starting QB is as long as he does a good job for the team. If we were to draft Mariota and either or both RGIII and Kirk were unhappy about - well, that sounds like a personal problem to me. They are getting paid well to play football for the Redskins and they can just deal with it. Hopefully, they would deal with it by competing even harder to win the starting job. We keep hearing about the "investment" in RGIII. I don't think that any draft pick is a investment. They are all gambles because you never really know beforehand who will make it in the NFL. What we paid for the right to draft RGIII is sunk cost. It's gone and it can never be fully recovered. As a practical matter, people should just forget about it. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
This team doesn't have the OL to help Mariota, RG3, or Cousins. The offensive line may be fine for a veteran QB, but not these guys.

The O-line needs improvement. But KC only took 7 or 8 sacks. Griffin was sacked over 30 times. If KC can cut down on the terrible INT's he's more than ok with this line. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
Hearing 4 GMs will attend the Oregon pro day including McCloughan. Titans, Bucs and Jets GM will be there as well.
I still think Titans will draft him. |

Cousins started to play bad after he started to get rattled. I don't understand why people keep talking about RG3 when I talk about the OL. RG3 has his issues that may or may not get resolved. But our OL in general is not suited to help the two QBs we have on the roster; nor will they help a rookie QB. If the team wants to keep the OL the way it is, they need to bring a veteran QB that can overcome these issues. If they want to give RG3 or Cousins another chance or bring in Mariota or another rookie, you can't have the same line we've had in the past two seasons. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
I have a weird feeling that we r going to trade griffin on draft day and take mariota. Anyone else feel this way?

I still think Titans will draft him.
IMO I just don't see it. Yes, the Titans are QB-hungry. But Mariota just is not the Whisenhunt type of QB. Whiz loves pocket passers. I just don't see him passing on someone like Leonard Williams so that he can draft a QB at #2 who doesn't fit his system. |
Re: Quarterback Hype
I'd imagine mettenburger is the guy in Tennessee but who really knows at this point. If he's there at 5 I wouldn't be surprised if we took him.

Would this be bundled with the Skins trading back? Stock piling more picks while dumping RG3? At that point there wouldn't be a QB worth taking in the 1st, assuming we drop at least 5-10 picks and Mariota shows well at his pro day. Cousins is the man this year or what? |
