Regardless of our opinions, I believe the name is going to change eventually. It's one of those things we should probably prepare for. It might not be for a decade but I think it's happening.

The organization should just stop using the word Redskins. Dont drop it just dont use it anymore. Call them Washington or Washington Football and keep the uniforms and logo the same.

If I thought or ever thought the name REDSKINS was meant to be a slang i would have never supported the team ..I understand the name offends some folks but they are looking to be offended..I ASK THIS SIMPLE QUESTION. If there last name was redskin would they change there name because it offended me?? it is getting to the point that YOUR NAME could be deemed offensive to some people.

I would change the logo before I changed the name...use a Red Ox or some other "manly" red-skinned animal.

I pretty much avoid the debate over the name because I feel like it is an issue that will work itself out eventually, but I do think you could keep the name if you just changed the logo out from a native america guy.

Someone was being funny and suggest changing it to a potato.

I also would be fine if they just shortened it from "Redskins to 'Skins since a lot of people say that already.

The name "redskins" wasn't a slur when it originated. It's not used that way now by Washington fans.

It was used as a slur by novelists and later movie studios, some copyright holders in the "entertainment industry" thereof probably still having deep pockets?

So why not go after the people who profited from using the name as an insult, rather than the fans cheering FOR the Redskins today?

This was a separate Trademark case as the Redskins' case, but struck down for the same reasons. It figures to apply to the Redskins.

The unconstitutional ruling took place in US District court. It could still go to the appellate level, and after that if the Supreme Court decides it wants to hear it, it could go there. So no, it's not over.

But this is a huge blow to anybody hoping to force a team name change. It doesn't take a constitutional scholar to understand how the government refusing trademarks for this reason is a violation of First Amendment rights.

I'll just throw out an alternate idea I had.
Let Dan meet with a few or a tribe leader or whatever you want to call them and get their permission and grace to change to the name to the name of their tribe. You dont change the logo, just the name.
So you could have -

The Washington Algonquin
The Washington Cherokees
The Washington Iroquois
etc
etc

bad thing about all of this is ..the better the Redskins do the more this becomes a issue ..IF the Skins can go deep into the playoffs this will become a loud roar.

Washington Football Nation.

(note* only if a name change is forced)

Nation would encompass all Native Americans with positive, supportive, non-divisive connotation.

The team represents the capital of the United States, or the American Nation. Again unifying.

We wouldn’t have to change the logo.

Added benefits

We would take the "America's Team" title belt

All kinds of good (corny) word play available with stadium and fan base (we would be "the Nation", a new meaning to "Welcome to Monday Night Football in the Nation's Capital" etc, etc)

All this is tongue in cheek (and only if a name change is forced).

Just leave the name as is. This has been going on for years and years now. People like Florio act like this "movement" has a lot more support than it really does. The majority of people don't care or don't think the name should change.

Whether or not it becomes a roar is completely irrelevant. Whether or not it's constitutional to ban a trademark because it's offensive is the only relevant point.

I don't care how people feel about it, because I know how Dan Snyder feels about it. All that matters is whether he's permitted to keep using it.

True but if advertisers start cutting ties and hitting them or the league in the wallet that could force a change. Highly unlikely to happen though.

Yeah I don't find that likely either, because corporate marketing departments pay attention to polls too. And even though there's a noisy group out there, the polls still say more than 80% of people and more than 80% of Native Americans specifically don't have a problem with the name.

I think there's a difference between PC and cultural sensitivity. It's probably not a good idea to have a team named after people or have people as mascots, period.

Just because something was ok a hundred years ago doesn't make it ok with time and more knowledge/awareness.

First all I was responding to it (the name) that it's not considered a slur.Second if you go back you will see I am on the side of Dan Snyder but feel that change will come so beat them to the punch.As Rushskins has said go with the R on the helmet and just call them the Skins or Washington ,you seem to ignore the facts so I won't get into the ignorance argument . I have a friend who is a midget who is upset with a team named the giants..true story..he is trying to get a petition up! also didn't cowboys kill native americans ..seems like the native americans are after the wrong team! Also there are atheist who don't like a team called the SAINTS! And how many people did pirates and buccaneers and vikings kill back in the day?? point is somebody will always be offended. heck I am offended by washington the city (politics)..not the Redskin name.

Browns - Now that is a PC name. Just name your team after the color of the uniform. It is perfectly neutral. We could be the Burgandy and Gold. Done. All team names will be their colors.

The name change thing is just media fodder until the FCC deems Redskins a racial slur and threatens to fine broadcast networks for its use on their airwaves.

Money talks and if the NFL's TV contracts are at peril that will force the league's hand to make the team change the name.

Until and unless that happens, nothing to see here.
