Redskins Free Agency 2016
Generic Redskins specific free agency discussion.
Thoughts on acquisitions, news on acquisitions, potential adds, etc. Given our GM's proclivities, likely to be pretty bland. Here's to winning the football season, not the offseason. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
After seeing the production Scott can pull out of a draft; FA is moot to me.

Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
So everyone knows about Denver's Danny Travathon. Here is a solid breakdown of another potential ILB who looks solid and young. I like the potential of Tahir Whitehead. Of course, only things I know about him are in the article.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/football-insider/wp/2016/03/03/free-agent-fits-a-big-name-and-low-key-inside-linebacker-the-redskins-could-pursue/ Really think we need to upgrade the ILB position. Foster and Compton are mediocre but competent. No longer a Riley fan. Whitehead seems to be a potential upgrade but may be just more of the same. Right now, from UFA's, I want speed and youth in the center of our defense. I am really okay with our perimeter guys - Kerrigan, Smith, Junior (assuming he is back), and Murphy. Same with DB's Culliver and Breeland are good starters and with better help/speed in the deep center, I think they are more than adequate. ILB's and Safeties, however, competent but incredibly unremarkable. Not sure this year's draft has anyone who would be an upgrade here so think it has to be done by UFA. |

Generally, I agree. At the same, he also pulled in some very nice mid-season replacement UFA's along with rebuilding last year's D with UFA signings (Knighton, Culliver, Goldson, Paea, Jean-Francois) (yes - Goldson a trade but was a pre-emptive trade as he was likely to be cut and be a UFA). While not spectacular, the free agent haul was nothing to sneeze at and certainly was essential in remaking the D: Culliver was improving as he adapted to the D until his injury, Knighton was a bit of wash, same with Paea, Francois was a good soliid pick-up. Add in folks like Foster, Blackmon, P. Thomas, and it's clear McLovin knews him some UFA's as well. To me, he uses the UFA process appropriately - making good depth acquisitions at reasonable prices and not blowing the bank on any one player. He has an eye for talent. Period. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
I'm really hoping we can get Ragland in the draft but to grab Trevathan would allow us to get a damn nice DT which shores up our line and fixes a lot of our LB woes too.
But Trevathan will probably be mucho dinero. |

The Redskins cannot rebuild solely through the draft. They still need a lot of help. The NFC will not be weak forever . |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
the jets have a DT, denvers got an LB, but the FA class overall is pretty weak this year, and i'm really against big money deals unless it's literally a can't miss, like Calvin Johnson in his prime.
scot makes pretty good decisions though (understatement), so the speculation game isn't as interesting. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
so, these 3 are back, no surprise.
The Redskins have tendered offers to all three exclusive rights free agents – linebacker Will Compton, running back Chris Thompson and punter Tress Way. Because none of them have three or more accrued years, the Redskins controlled their rights by making them an offer. All three figure in the Redskins' plans: Compton might end up starting again at inside linebacker; Way has solidified the punter position since joining them right before the 2014 season and Thompson served as a third-down back last year.
|
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Can only do so much with our cap atm. Don't see us diving to hard in FA. Maybe in week 2 or 3 we will fill depth. Can totally see us letting Knighton go because the draft is rich with DL. Maybe even 2 DL in the first 3 rounds.
|
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
we can't let knighton go, because he's not under contract.
we get 16.5m from rg3, and 3-4m from letting roberts go, that covers kirk. hatcher and goldson have 8m cap hits that could be reduced, cutting kory or riley saves about 4m each. it's not exactly endless cap room, but it's enough to go after people if we want to. again though, i'm not sure there's a lot out there to get this year. any money saved will help with jordan reed next year and figuring out what we're doing with PG/DJ. |

I gotta feeling we'll do the exact opposite of what I'm thinking here, since we went defensive minded in last year's FA...but FA is for the big needs...draft is for the best players, so, here is what I would do....... #1- S - I'd try to lock up an up-and-coming safety - we can use some younger legs back there. I expect D-Hall to play better this coming season, but injury risk is a concern. #2 - NT ...I don't much about him, but Ian Williams sounds interesting. Played 58% of the defensive snaps. I still think we draft D-line, but we do stand to lose a lot of veteran presence on the line, depending on Hatcher's decision. #3 -ILB - I'd love Trevathan- he is everything we need. But, I wouldn't break the bank to get him. Compton knows the calls, so if we get pushed, we could pair him with an athletic player (Spaight?) or a rookie, depending on how the draft unfolds. #4 - I keep forgetting that we have to sign Galette, but I'd love to see what he could bring if he gets healthy. I'm leaving out CB, but, if Culliver can't make it back, then I could see this being a bigger priority. p.s. - for the draft I'd be looking at: DL, C, CB, WR, QB, LB, RB for the draft. Hopefully we can get a starting C from this year's crop. |

McC has already said his priority after signing cousins is a) stopping the run on defense and b) getting the running game going. I look for us to get stronger "up the middle" on defense. NT is THE area of focus. The free agent class at nt is kinda outstanding. Look for an add there. Next I could see us bring in an ilb who is a sticker, volume tackler vs the run. STrong safety could be the surprise signing. I'm watching the Kam situation closely. Getting a safety who can come up in the box and tackle would be a great addition. I think center position will be an add in the draft. But look for an addition of a 1. run blocking tight end and 2. Running back who will compliment Matt jones in free agency Stop the run, run the ball |

Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
My Maroon and Yellow :joecool: free agent board/target list Offense:
In no particular order: QB: Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien, Matt Flynn, Bruce Gradkoski All rhythm drop back/wco QBs with varying levels of experience RB: Robert Turbin, Kendall Hunter...well rounded prospects with ties to Scott WR: Jermaine Kearse, Mo Sanu....well rounded ties to Scott/Jay respectively TE: Jermaine Gresham-has familiarity w/ Jay and the offense, solid run blocking TE which was sorely lacking--role: stopgap, run block TE/back-up TE Dwayne Allen (depending on money) James Hanna-blocking TE, pending health check Imo the team can address interior OL C/LG internally and add depth in the later rounds of the draft |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Nice list. Only one I slightly disagree with is Allen. I think he is more of a pass catcher and will be a bit more expensive as a result.
Back-up QB and run blocking TE are positions which are eminently suited for being filled from the UFDA market. As you note, lots of guys in those positions with ties to Scot or Jay. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Jermaine Gresham seems like a perfect fit to me.
I like Robert Turbin, as well. Power back who could be a decent backup RB. Is Chris Ivory available? He's a favorite of mine. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Ivory's available but probably a bit pricey.
|
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
i don't think we bring in a big name FA receiver unless he's super cheap/a value contract. sanu isn't really as good as his hype unfortunately. if we want a WR, the draft may be better just because of the money tied up there, unless we're cutting PG, in which case it's a downgrade in top 22 talent (though possibly better in talent/$). really wouldn't like a gradkowski signing either. colt mccoy is obviously the most likely, and he's shown he's fine.
I'd definitely kick the tires on the NTs and LBs (williams, harrison, trev) and at least see what they're asking. I think the draft in so deep at DT this year that you've probably got to take one in the 1st or 2nd anyways, just because of the value compared to almost any other year there. still, those are 3 really good FAs that would be huge upgrades if they can be had. trev won a superbowl, so he's probably getting overpaid. DTs sometimes end up cheaper than they should be relative to impact though... |

If the price is right I like him because he's a well rounded TE with more ability then his production would indicate. If the cost isn't favorable for us then pass, that would be my approach throughout FA. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
My junior GM's Free Agency board 2016 Defense:
ILB: Jerrell Freeman, Tahir Whitehead, Danny Lansanah............Dekoda Watson (personal fav),re-unite Donald Butler with Joe Barry and maybe Joe gets him playing good again and for a favorable price? NT: I would bring Knighton back, solid player, affordable but if he cost too much then.....Ian Williams....Mike DeVito for me draft is too deep at DL to chase FA NT CB: Patrick Robinson ties to Joe B, Janoris Jenkins stud, Jeremy Lane slot w/ ties to Scott, William Gay, Brandon Boykin, Kyle Wilson, Leon Hall, Casey Hayward, Prince Amukamara, Nickel Package rusher/edge rusher:4 man line someone that can rush from the edge while Preston kicks inside or someone that can play on the inside while Preston plays the edge........William Hayes, Derrick Shelby, John Simon, Charles Johnson....outrageous signing: Bruce Irvin, Oliver Vernon Safety: I believe in sticking with the transition of Hall to FS this year and getting Dash to re-structure or.......kick rocks...would also bring back Duke for team friendly prove it deal......Eric Weddle only because I believe a FS that can call the defense can raise the level of the entire defense and Weedle knows this defense and knows Barry I wouldn't expect to acquire 1 from each group, but 1 "big" signing and a mid level signing from 1 or 2 units |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
"Legal Tampering" starts today. Illegal tampering has been underway for some time now but today is when we start to hear more facts and rumors connecting UFA's and the teams who are trying to sign them. BTW, isn't "legal tampering" an oxymoron like "jumbo shrimp"?
Team will not be allowed to sign players until 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 9th. You can count on hearing news of some signings at 4:01 P.M. that day. Will the Redskins be active early on in FA? Probably not but I wouldn't be shocked if they were. I say that because I think it might make sense for the Skins to try to sign just a couple of good young FA's this time around. Perhaps a safety and a NT. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
there's not really a safety worth getting. weddle is the best available, but he's 31 and wants big money. he would be an upgrade, but possibly only a marginal one and only for a year or two. there are 2 DTs worth looking at (as starters).

Andre Roberts 2.0
never heard of steve shroup. his plan is pretty terrible though. blackmon was a mid season signing, yet somehow he's worth 3-4mill per year? we're not even going to bring him back unless we can't find younger guys. |

Looks like Redskins are parting ways with Hatcher as well:

Looks like we're moving on from Knighton:
Terrance KnightonVerified account @MisterRoast98 Thank you DMV for embracing me this year. Had a lot of fun on this years playoff run. The Pot Roast train has been told to move on! |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Not surprising about Hatcher, Knighton and DY. Hatcher was a all around bad signing. Great guy in all but the production vs the salary was never there. Knighton was on a one year "prove it" deal. Obviously SM didn't see enough to want to re-sign him. Jay's offense doesn't use a fullback. None of these are shockers.
I'm wondering if the Jets resigned their nose tackle? If not maybe we're going to make a run at him. Forgot his name... |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Another good nickname. "Snacks".
