NFL Free Agency 2016

Jaguars agreed to terms with DL Malik Jackson, formerly of the Broncos, on a six-year, $90 million contract.

The deal includes a whopping $42 million guaranteed, making Jackson one of the highest paid defensive players in league history. He'll get $45 million over the first three years of the deal. Coming off a monster 2015, Jackson, who turned 26 last month, will be transitioning from a 3-4 attack to a 4-3 defense, but has the skills to collapse the pocket no matter the system. It's a huge get for the Jaguars, who desperately need to goose their pass rush in Year 4 of the Gus Bradley era.

IMO this is a major mistake. Good player on a great defense who just won the SB....red flags. 90 million, 42 guarantee is a little much. This stuff rarely works out...

Wow

Terrible move by Jacksonville. He'll never live up to that contract. The guy is not Reggie White. Some of these teams just never learn the ropes about free agency. Didn't they just sign Julius Thomas to big money last year? How'd that work out?

Damn that's too much money but hey if they got it spend it I suppose. Jacksonville is on the verge of being really good

He also is transitioning to a 4-3 scheme from a 3-4. Visions of Albert Hanyesworth laying on the ground vs Philly when I read of the guarantee money and the scheme change

Lol Idk if he'll be that bad but I bet he won't see year 3 of this deal. Seems like every year someone overpays a key role player on a SB champion, and this year Malik Jackson is the big winner.

There are certain teams that are historically terrible and on top of it are cheap. Jacksonville is one of those teams. The owner pockets a ton of the TV money that he really did not earn, because his team does terrible at the gate and on the TV ratings. But all teams get an even cut of the TV money.
Then on top of that when forced to spend money (the 89% rule) they do something stupid like this. They have so many needs but spend heavily on one player. Where is the logic?

Re: NFL Free Agency 2016

Jacksonville has a ton of cap room, and their coaching staff is basically going to be on the hot seat. So I am not surprised they've made this type of deal.

The #Dolphins deal with pass-rusher Mario Williams should come today, sources says, and it's expected to land him $8M per year.

maybe this contract helps them meet their minimum spending requirement... I also think it's a mistake.

The Jags are better than some give credit for, did they overpay for Malik Jackson? Probably so, but they have a lot of young talent on that team.

QB Black Bortles
WR Allen Robinson
WR Allen Hurns
RB TJ Yeldon
TE Julius Thomas
DE Malik Jackson
LB Dante Fowler Jr. (coming off injury)
5th overall pick, probably gonna go defense so they have talent

They are not signed.
But you can negotiate earlier now that the tampering rules are relaxed.
So the deal gets "locked in" earlier than we are used to.
Most of those will sign at 4:00 today.

OK, that makes sense. I didn't realize they had relaxed the tampering rules. Kind of takes the "excitement" out of free agency.

ESPN's Ed Werder reports the trade sending CB Byron Maxwell and WLB Kiko Alonso to the Dolphins is "considered dead."

The two teams also would be swapping first-round picks in the deal with the Eagles getting the Dolphins' No. 8 overall pick and Miami moving back to No. 13. It was pure highway robbery by Eagles GM Howie Roseman just to get Dolphins czar Mike Tannenbaum to take the contracts of Maxwell and Alonso, let alone moving up in the first round. It appears after a couple days of thought that Tannenbaum is possibly smartening up and getting out of this one. The reason the deal is on life support is allegedly the Dolphins' concern with Maxwell's shoulder.

You know I've been thinking lately " WTF is Miami doing? They seem completely brainless" And now in the bold, everything makes sense. That guy is a complete clown

Becuz its hardly a one back league anymore not to mention ivory is a good change of pace to yeldon... may have overpaid a bit but smart solid move.

TheMalcolmConnection 03-09-2016 09:24 AM

Re: NFL Free Agency 2016

Yeldon was one of those guys who could handle the load though. It's like just because you have the cap space, doesn't mean you should be stupid with it. Dunno.

Just think you could get your change-of-pace guy in the draft and pay a fraction of that.
Janoris Jenkins to the Giants
ESPN's Dan Graziano reports the Giants "plan to make a run" at transition tagged DE Olivier Vernon.

Despite re-signing Jason Pierre-Paul and reportedly coming to terms with free agent CB Janoris Jenkins, the Giants still have a lot of work to do on defense. Adding an ascending pass rusher like Vernon would be a fantastic next step. The Dolphins are expected to rescind Vernon's transition tag, meaning the Giants will not have to worry about Miami matching if they are able to work out a deal with the talented defensive end.

Looks like the Giants are going with the "win now" strategy...probably see the writing on the wall with Eli with the window closing.

You think Ivory will have the same success behind that line in Jaxville?

To me, the big red flag is a smart HC Bowles letting the guy walk. They didn't even make an offer to him.

I'm not surprised that they are in a win-now mode. I think if they have another supbar season, they are going to take a lot of heat from the media/fans since they pretty much went out of their way to blame everything on Coughlin.

I love that our biggest move is resigning our back up qb. I'll have 2 helpings of what McC is serving.

Also I think the teams with the most cap room are overspending like crazy because they know they have to reach the cap floor this year.

It also feels so different from when Bruce Allen was like, "We're taking care of our own." the year we won the division with RG3. We weren't THAT talented of a team...

I also keep wondering if while we reload via the draft, we'll keep signing the Terrence Knightons and (maybe) Chris Longs just to have some kind of depth.

I love it, mainly because I thought this trade was going to be great for the Eagles. They would've shed 2 big contracts, gotten something in return, and if the rumor of swapping first rounders was true they would have moved up to #8 from #13. But if the trade is dead we don't have to worry about any of that.

I think not making the trade is a good thing for Miami. Alonzo is injury prone and Maxwell didn't live up to the hype in Philly.

It still baffles me that after the long history of free agency misfires and giving away picks by our team (which was well documented by the media); other teams don't learn from our mistakes.

Its a very good thing...but still even to first agree in principle was a head scractcher for sure. They were going to give up a top 10 pick and move back with that deal....what!!!!

They gave Mario Williams 2 year deal with like 8-9 million per. That's cray to me.
