In Season Redskins Roster Grades
Good morning folks! Out of curiosity a couple years ago I subscribed to PFF( Profootball Focus) just to see how they looked at players in the league and graded out talent. PFF as a whole has kinda picked up steam as now its referenced by major media outlets as a viable source.
Now I know about the hate, but a lot of times Ive found the grades have kind of matched up to what I saw on the field. Other times its seemed completely off. Either way it can spark good conversation when it comes down to talking about ways we can improve as a team and which part of the team seems like ballers. There a lot of other cool sources besides PFF...feel free to share and provide input. So far with PFF when looking at basic performance grades with the Skins our guys playing well are Norman, Wil Compton, Trent Williams, Trent Murphy, Chris Baker and Sau Cravens. Struggling on Defense: Deshawn Phillips, David Bruton, Preston Smith, Ziggy Hood, Ricky Jean and Breeland. Struggling on Offense: Cousins and Chris Thompson. Surprise is the Oline as a unit...they have them excelling at Pass Blocking and Ok at Run blocking, but overall solid unit. Kory L rating much higher than last year is something to note...They have him at an avg rate among NFL Centers. Couple things to watch...Could Kendall Fuller (Nickel) and Duke Ihenacho be giving more opportunities to play? Sua Cravens has earned more playing time...What about playing Fuller on the outside and sliding Breeland to Nickel? Sure you can use this thread to take shots at PFF or we can talk performance and accountability with the roster. |

Beside Kory, our O-line is doing a great job so far. Makes me regret we didn't give Bryan Stork a real chance even more. But they know better than me, must have seen something about him that scared them off. |

mid 70s...which consider mid NFL standard. But remember the sample size is low for him and not because of injury :madani::hitfan::cheeky: effing Gruden and McVay Also compare to our other skill players on the offense, Matt Jones has been inline performing at a solid NFL level along with Reed, Vernon davis, D-Jax and Garcon. They had Crowder, Niles paul and (as I mention above) Chris Thompson rated as under performing so far. Thompson was actually rated really poor. And to be honest, Thompson does nothing to move the needle in my eyes. |

they got them as one of the top rated pass blocking Oline units in the league...So that says Cousins being kept clean with time. So pressure hasn't been an issue with his performance. I agree, I didn't see Pittsburgh or the Cowboys really putting Cousins on the ground. |

I agree, I didn't see Pittsburgh or the Cowboys really putting Cousins on the ground.[/quote] Some of that is matchup-dependent, of course. Neither team has any pass rushers to speak of. We'll see how we hold up against some of the better pass rushing lines, but I agree that pass blocking in general has been great. Cousins has been sacked, what, 2 times so far? |

Yep, 2 times by the cowboys. We'll see how they do against a pretty good front 4 this sunday. |

Honestly, this grade makes the whole list suspect to me. Kory L. has been terrible. Both the Steelers and Boys (who have a crap D line) have had a push up the middle. Not to mention all the false starts (he has 3 in 2 games -- a lot for any OL and especially a center). |

The ranking is taking into account the result of the play. I've been seeing Kory get pushed back into Cousins's lap quite a bit, but only on a few occasions has it resulted in Cousins having to hurry the throw or actually being pressured. In other words, Kory is doing just enough to avert disaster. Against a stronger DT I'm concerned he'll fold like a house of cards - that's just what the eye test tells you. But PFF is grading based on whether the block successfully allowed the QB to deliver the throw without a rush. He's getting by so far, against 2 fairly weak defensive lines. Have to take these rankings with a grain of salt - in two weeks you've only faced two teams. The rankings are heavily influenced by matchups. |

Id have to agree, I clearly see him as the weakest link. But Im gonna watch a little closer now. Couple things kinda stand out with the grading and what im seeing and I mention some above... But another is Preston Smith and Kerrigan need to pick it up a little bit in rushing the passer. And the grades reflect our lack of production along the Dline. |
Re: In Season Redskins Roster Grades
I'm as surprised by Kory's grade as I am by Lavao's...
I thought he did a very good job so far, how is he so far behing Kory and Scherff? |

Yeah, but I'm sure the PFF guys are using All-22 film when they do their analysis. |

I think that was los panda's point: they must have seen things we didn't see live. (but I have to say I'm still not sure how accurate some of these grades are...) |
Re: In Season Redskins Roster Grades
I really like Cooley's film breakdown each week. He spends more time watching the game film than the PFF guys and he knows the individual player's responsibility on a given play and he will explain in detail why a given player received a given grade.
His grading scale is: 10 Hall of famer 9 Pro Bowler 8 Really good NFL Starter 7 Average NFL Starter (JAG Just a guy) everybody starts here 6 Back up 5 Looking for work Week 1 Pittsburgh QB Cousins 5.9 WR Djax 8.9 Crowder 8.3 Garcon 8.1 Doctson NG TE V. Davis 7.7 J. Reed 8.3 RB M. Jones 7 OL T. Williams 8.5 S. Lavau 7.2 C. Lict 8.4 B. Scherff 7.7 M. Moses 7.5 S D. Bruton 5.2 D Hall 6.4 CB J. Norman 9 Breeland 5.8 Phillips 6 ILB W. Compton 7.8 M. Foster 7 S. Cravens NG OLB P. Smith 6.7 R. Kerrigan 5.5 T. Murphy NG DL Hood 6.5 Reyes 7 Baker 7.2 Francois 6.4 Jenkins NG Golston Cooley didn't grade him because he said they are friends and he was terrible. I got these from the pod cast of the radio show on 980 so I may have missed one or two. Some players that don't get many snaps he doesn't grade. |
Re: In Season Redskins Roster Grades
Dallas Week 2
QB Cousins 6.9 WR Djax 7.9 Crowder 8.1 Garcon 8.2 Doctson6 TE V. Davis 6.7 J. Reed 8.3 RB M. Jones 7.5 OL T. Williams 9.1 S. Lavau 6.7 C. Lict 7.4 B. Scherff 9 M. Moses 7.2 S D. you got it, frenchy. |
Re: In Season Redskins Roster Grades
In his film breakdowns, Cooley goes through the specifics of most of the players.
On Lict, he says he is getting pushed back some, but he isn't on skates going backwards and he is very consistent at keeping the rusher squarely in front of him. He says when he can keep the defender in front of him 1v1, it's on the QB to move in the pocket. |
Re: In Season Redskins Roster Grades
Awesome posts Jelly. Got a coworker who loves the Cooley tape breakdowns.
You know I see a lot more consistency between Cooley and pff grades than discrepancies. Kinds surprising but def brings some validity to players' performances. Kory l thing, well it's def a positive to see him rebounding but need to see the penalties stop. Bruton needs to pick it up as well as Preston and Kerrigan. And dude, feed Matt jones the ball. |
Re: In Season Redskins Roster Grades
PFF
Matt Jones was the top rated RB last week and currently for the year is rated 3rd best RB in the league. Chris Thompson has been outstanding the last couple weeks and is rated 33 RB. Desean, Garcon and Crowder are 27, 51st and 57th. Jordan Reed is rated the 8th best TE and surprisingly his run blocking grade has been really good this year. Vernon Davis is a respectable 23red highest rated TE. Schreff is the 9th rated Guard. They rated Arie Kujo fairly poor in his first start, especially with his Run blocking. Tackles are a strong unit...Silverback rated 2nd in the league and Moses has turned it up the last couple games and is now 12th best Tackle in the league. Ive seen it too, guy has quietly dominated. Norman is the 11th best CB...which is down but still an extremely solid grade. Quinton Dunbar has been graded really well the last couple weeks and in limited action is graded out as the 25th highest rated CB. Wil Blackmon has been steady at Safety replacing D Hall. D Bruton continues to disappoint with one of the lowest grade in run defense...he isn't tackling folks. ILB....they have these guys rated high...Cravens 23rd, Foster 25th and Compton 35th. one thing noticeable is Foster they have rated poor in his run defense... Dline...lets just say Baker is rated 22nd highest Dlinemen and everyone else is garbage. Edge Defenders: Trent Murphy 31st highest grade....Kerrigan 54th and Preston Smith is 69th and rated extremely poor in pass rush and run defense. Maybe he should sit? Cousins isn't rated high...29th in the league. Which he was so terrible in the first 2 games of the season its no surprise. CB Phillips is rated 112, he shouldn't see the field. Kendell Fuller was rated meh in his first start but came up in support of the run well. Which is no surprise, that's how they are taught at Va Tech |

Re: In Season Redskins Roster Grades
How does Philly's offensive line rank? Just curious on this as I just can't believe their offense is clicking ONLY with a rookie QB.

Thanks man. Also would be interested to see where Jordan Matthews ranks. Just doing a lil' pre-Eagles scouting.

Wentz is the top graded qb so far. Jordan Matthews is their highest rated WR at 70.3, good enough for 45th in the league....in other words their receivers suck. Their Oline...lane Johnson been really gud tackle 3rd in league, thanks to using steroids. Their guards are rated high...7'and 16 In The league...probably the highest rated tandem. Peters isn't good and their center effing blows. Brent celek their starting TE is rated 10th in league...really high in run blocking. So solid rating, hence quick start. |
Re: In Season Redskins Roster Grades
Matt Jones is definitely improving, but 3rd seems high.
I would have him closer to 7 or 8 overall... DeMarco, Devonta Freeman, David Johnson, Isaiah Crowell (that kid is tough), Christine Michael , LeSean McCoy (I'd flip a coin between him & Eddie Lacy) But, he's definitely improving and hopefully keeps moving upwards |

They had him #1 rated...crazy. But Ive watched him once and came away impressed. Dak Prescott is not even in the conversation, Its not close, Wentz is a far superior QB so far this season. |
Re: In Season Redskins Roster Grades
Me too, but no way that lasts. No one just comes in and dominates the league for an entire season as a rookie. He'll even out.

Cooley's Grades for the offense against Baltimore from his film breakdown on 980:
10 Hall of Fame 9 All Pro 8.5 Pro Bowl 8.0 Really Good NFL Starter 7.0 Average NFL Starter (everybody starts here) 6.0 Back Up Less than 6 looking for a job. His grading scale seems to be tweaked from week 1 with the distinction between All Pro and Pro Bowl. Cousins 6.9 Jones 5.4 Thompson 8.0 Djax 8.5 Garcon 9.0 Crowder 8.3 Reed 7 Davis 7 Trent 9.4 Lavau 6.6 Long 7.2 Scherff 7.3 Moses 8.0 Jones is the glaring weakness according to Cooley from the game. He has been predicting all week that Kelly will see a lot more snaps against Philly. He docked Kirk for leaving a lot of yards on the field for choosing the wrong receiver and of course the interception but was also inaccurate on several balls. He didn't kill him though. The most interesting criticism was on Scherff. Says he is at his worst when he has to loose on screens. Is really good on most everything else. |

Awesome stuff, thanks for posting Jelly
I've thought for a few weeks Ihenacho should be starting.. Also glad to see Cooley thought so highly of Ioannidis, did not think he would contribute much this year Btw I had plenty of reservations about the signing, but I'm finally on Norman bandwagon, he gets beat sometimes like anybody but he's a damn good playmaking corner and brings so much character to this defense, through 5 weeks he is definitely worth the 75 million imo |

What he mentioned about Ioannidis was his motor and hustle. He says he is slow, and is never going to be a guy who can get to the QB but plays gap responsible and is strong. He was in on several tackles out of pure determination. |
