Raiders looking to intercept Kellen Winslow?
From San Francisco Chronicle columnist Glenn Dickey (himself a longtime observer of the Raiders):
Who's the pick?: Pro Football Weekly has joined the debate over the Raiders' choice in the second position in the NFL Draft by guessing Miami tight end Kellen Winslow will be their choice. The same issue says that Winslow and Iowa offensive tackle Robert Gallery are the two top players in the draft, though not necessarily in that order. I think one of those two is a more likely choice than a quarterback, wide receiver or Miami safety Sean Taylor. As Norv Turner is the new coach of the Raiders, he may well look at Kellen Winslow and see the ideal H-back. |
what you fail to misunderstand it is not norv's decision, it's al davis's decision. he will pick who he thinks is best for the raiders no matter how stupid the pick is.
|
The Raiders have serious needs all over the spectrum. If they think a stud tight end is the way to fix their problems, then the AFC West is going to be a three team division.
|
First of all, I don't predict they will pick Winslow, but it is a real possibility. Al Davis and Norv Turner have a real affinity for one another. Davis has allowed Turner to choose his own staff. Davis and Turner have a great old time talking football. I don't think we should be shocked if Turner likes Winslow and that Davis agrees. Davis also saw first hand what Winslow Sr did to the Raiders many years ago, playing them twice a year.
The Raiders have a huge need for a wide receiver, however - Tim Brown is going to be gone and Jerry Rice is at best a #2. Jerry Porter is not a #1 receiver. I thought they would draft Larry Fitzgerald. It is eyebrow raising that Glenn Dickey, who has followed the Raiders since the 1960's, and is one of the top columnists in the country, thinks they will go with either Winslow or - let's hope - Robert Gallery. |
They would be stupid to pick him, if they did the whole draft board would get tossed up and all kinds of trades would happen. Who knows what would happen with Winslow taken that early.
|
The Raiders are just trying to get trade talk started. Thay want to know the value of their pick, before they decide if they use it or trade down.
I am not taking anything away from Winslow, but Larry Fitzgerald, Mike Williams, Eli Manning, Robert Gallery and Sean Taylor are all rated higher. Anyone with half a brain would trade down if you have the Raiders pick and you want Winslow. Plus you get extra picks and you don't have to pay Winslow as much money. |
It might help the Skins with the cap having Winslow or Taylor. They will both want big paychecks but their positions will keep the numbers a little lower. Roy Williams has a heft paycheck though, and Tony got a decent one. Ed Reed and Shockey dont make that much becuase of where they were drafted
|
The Raiders have a bunch of needs, how about a QB to take over for the 70 year old Rich Gannon?
|
The raiders would take Fitzgerald before a QB. Expecially if Mike Willams gets a good 40 time. hes been at soem special conditioning camp in Atlanda working out for the last wto months. Dont be surprised if Roy Williams jumps up either.

My thought's exactly, if they want winslow, by all mean's! But QB as well as WR are much more pressing need's, I would be shocked if they passed up on 1 of the QB's, or one of the WR's, If thier smart they will think long term here but a TE who isn't rated that high, over a QB who is rated that high? Sound's like smoke and mirror's to me. |
Winslow is a safer pick though if for somereason Al Davis feels like being conservative. But when has that ever ahppened
|
The Raiders do have alot of need's but as some one allready stated. Brown and Rice arent getting any younger. The need some fresh blood to help Jerry Porter. I think they will grab Fitzgerald.
|
I see it as they either get LF or Mike Williams. They probably feel the need to replace old bones with young blood. That is very prevalent at the WR and Qb position, but I still see them drafting a wideout.
|
Im sure they will draft a receiver... With Rice and Brown, LF of MW would have two of the best mentors in the league... Kinda like Bailey and Smoot with Green.

This may be a little off topic, but it's interesting to see that old Norv's feelings are still hurt from getting fired a few years back. |
I think Norvs just glad to have been offered a head coaching job again. Its not often Coachs return to being an assistant and years later get a head job again.
|
OK, it may be a bit wild but what if the following happens:
Trotter and Gardner (they need a young WR) to the Raiders with say our 5th rounder and/or a pick from next year, if that isn't enough #2 pick (Raiders #1) to us The #2 pick to Detroit (who would probably pick up Fitzgerald instead of Winslow) to swap with their #6 pick plus their 2nd or 3rd rounder (again I'm unsure of the value Detroit would attach to the #2 pick) We get Winslow and Taylor and possibly swap a 5th rounder for a 2nd or 3rd. OK guys flame away! :) |
I want what you are drinking.
|
Best of luck to Norv, just wait until he is canned for no good reason. Well, Davis might actually have a good reason if Norv has the amount of success, or I should say lack thereof, that he had here.
|
I absolutely Loved the Norv Hire!
I absolutely loved the Norv Hire in Oakland!
I've said it before, I love kidding my son-in-law the Raiderz fan! He with the Grey and Black house, the room dedicated to his Raiderz and Yankees, and the Raiderz Flag out front! He hates Norv, so now he is indeed conflicted! You gotta love it! |
We'd have better luck just dealing with Detroit. They dont need Fitzgerald, they need a solid number two guy (gardner) and a bunch of other help. I cant see Oakland doing that, but mabye detroit would atleast think about it before saying no

There's been some talk in the Boston Herald of the Lions trading the 6th for N.E.'s two first rounders. Though Millen is saying he'd need a player as well With Charles Rogers and Tai Streets (and I guess Az-Hakim as well), plus Michael Ricks at tight end and Harrington at QB what the Lions could really use is a running back which they could certainly find in the late 1st round |
That trade would work for the Lions but everythign ive read has said the Patriots would never trade into the top ten becuase they dont need that one big player and liek the lions really just want a running back. The lions may want to do that trade but I cant see the Patriots doign it.
|
I agree.
Also, since the Pats have made it clear they are going to get a RB, they too will be able to get one at the end of the first round. I have seen more mock drafts lately that have them standing "Pat" and still getting kevin jones. |
