Thank You Kirk Cousins Thread

Since the franchise tag deadline has now passed, and Kirk is set to become a Free Agent, is it okay to post this here?

Thank you Kirk Cousins! He was my second favorite QB here of all time, with Mark Brunell being 1st. He gave us respectability at the position, and was a guy that we never had to worry about getting in trouble at a club, or running afoul of the law like so many NFL players. While ultimately we may never know if Kirk was all about the money from day one, or if he really wanted to stay here, I want to give my heart felt thanks to him, for energizing our fanbase after the RG3 disaster and giving us hope, and lots of great moments:

Redskins Records:
Most 300 yard passing games in one season
Best at-home passer rating since 1950
Most pass completions in one season
Most consecutive passes without an interception at home
Most passing yards in single season
Only QB in team history to have three 4,000 yard seasons
There's probably some others that i've missed, but i think those are the big ones. Thank you Kirk!!

I'll keep an eye on him elsewhere, if he goes to the Vikings I definitely wouldn't mind him going deep in the playoffs. I put partial blame on him for the way things ended but I can't fault him for not reciprocating when the Redskins didn't show him any love.

Good luck to him elsewhere, and thanks for helping bring the Redskins out of the dumpster and into the land of averageness.

I have much love and respect for Kirk Cousins. For the first time in a long time, he allowed me to watch my beloved team with a bit more confidence and higher expectations than I've been able to enjoy in several years. He's an all around good guy and in the end, I can't fault him for wanting to get maximum value and dollars for his family. Yes, admittedly, there is a part of me that hopes he doesn't become too overly successful, because from this point forward, the sports media will bash the Redskins organization for years to come over this.

All the more important reason for the 'skins to find their own future franchise quarterback, as I resolved myself to the fact that Cousins was never, truly, wanting to be in Washington.

That being said, good luck Cap'n Kirk! Unless you're playing the Redskins!

I think Kirk was damn good here and I will miss him, I wish we could have kept him or that he wanted to stay but for whatever reasons he is now gone and we have a damn good QB in Smith. I could care less who KC goes too and how well he does, he's no longer my teams QB.

Hard for me to be thankful for a guy who took up a lot of our cap space in the past two years with average results, and wanted to be paid like a QB who could carry the team on his back. Good effing riddance from me.

And yes yes, I know the team had some fault too, so no need to re-hash this.

Kinda how I feel, like I said I won't be rooting for him/team that he's on. It's like when Champ left (My favorite player at the time), I could care less what he did in Denver.

I am more in this line. For all his positives, he brought just as much drama to the offseasons and made the team all about him. For those who say the Skins eff'ed it up, I say Cousins held his grudge far past what most teams would put up with. As I understand it, the coach, the assistant coaches, at one point the General Manager, were all in his corner and put their necks on the line to get him his shot. And in the end, he basically punked Gruden.

Personally, I expect him to crash and burn, and I feel sorry for Vikings fans if he ends up there. They are a fan base that I could get behind to win a superbowl, if they get back to that point, but they won't. Not with Cousins.

(IF they do, I will be happy for them).

Finally,

Setting team records doesn't mean anything when you basically are trying to run away from the team who is putting it all together for you.

Cousins has had nothing but Offensive gurus running his offenses, he clearly is a good qb, but what makes my team heroes:
Art Monk
Darrell Green
Riggo
Theisman
Chris Samuels
London Fletcher
Clinton Portis
Santana Moss
Trent Williams
and others
Is that they were/are Skins first, football players second. Cousins was never EVER that.

I liked Cousins but can identify with CRed's view. I like guys who are committed.

I also think Gruden's scheme, with McVay being here, and the quality of the surrounding cast makes Cousins look better than he really is. I think deep down Cousins knows it. He will look to land in a situation with as good a surrounding cast as possible, which is why Minnesota is probably the leader in the clubhouse. Getting to play with Diggs, Theilen and Rudolph plus a good defense is exactly what Cousins wants.

I think he did that once, and basically after KC said he wasn't going to negotiate.

no one defends the FO on this, but KC had every opportunity to be the qb for the Skins Fans and Skins team and he didn't step up to it.

Good ridance. Self serving douce. Football is a team game. Players on kurts team said he was in it for himself. We will never win a championship with players who care more about themselves than winning. A locker room united is more important than stats and plyer ratings. The skins management did enough to keep kurt happy if he was mature enough to be a professional. BTW several players on alex smith's team lamented his loss. Welcome alex. We will win more games next year.

It's a shame that it had to end like this. Only the Skins could F up a good situation so badly.

Bruce Allen...often wrong but never in doubt...tried to bully you off the poker table with his pocket 3s. But you were patient and in the end you took his entire stack.

Best of luck Kirk, I'll be cheering for you.

I'm seeing a lot of bitterness in this thread, but I guess that's the way ugly divorces go.

For me, 24-0 Bucs will be one of my favorite highlights of watching the Redskins, and we have Kirk to thank for that. Did he bring us back to dominance? No, but he's the first Redskins quarterback in 25 years to bring us back to respectability. If you want to give Gruden/Allen the credit for that, do it. As much as Kirk owes his "success" (air-quotes because half of you act like Kirk was an overrated bum) to Gruden/McVay/etc., they owe equal credit to him, for having some success on the field. Team sport gents.

True. All I think we are saying though is there are a good 15 QBs in the league they could have done the same or better with.

I mean look at what McVay did with Goff.

Kirk was good. But I’m not sure we’re any worse today, and after free agency I think we’ll be better.

That's my stance. I would've been happy if the 'skins were able to sign Cousins to a long term deal. I loved Kirk Cousins. I loved what he brought to the team. But, he's not the elite quarterback the sports world is trying to make him out to be. I'm hearing things like, "Kirk Cousins will take a last place team and turn them into a first place team. Kirk Cousins will take a mediocre team and turn them into a Super Bowl team." There's been absolutely no evidence of that. Kirk has made the 'skins a better team, but he's not turned them into a playoff contending team nor a Super Bowl team. He requires a stacked team, he's not Tom Brady.

Re: Thank You Kirk Cousins Thread

I've gone through the stages of grief on this one. The way things have shaken out, I'm glad we're moving on and have a plan that potentially can keep the momentum of the team moving upward without a reboot. I'm bitter towards Cousins. I think he's been a professional, but the fan in me is pissed that he didn't want to be our Franchise QB. I will root against him.

Why I'm so bitter isn't all his fault, yes the organization's decisions with him played a role, but he seems to have been a bit too sensitive if you ask me. I don't think I'd handle it any better than he did, but I'm not being paid ridiculous sums of money. All that said, I'm grieving what I thought was a Redskins resurrection.

As a fan I suffered through mediocrity, qnd when Gibbs cane back I thought, here we go, they're building something, not reaching, but building. Then it feel apart so quickly and tragically. After Sean Taylor was killed and Gibbs reretired, I tuned out for a few years, the team wasn't good and didn't seem like they were building on what was a rising team under Gibbs. I had a little hope when Shanahan came in, but it was when Griffin was drafted that I was synched back in. Finally, a Franchise QB. As that whole debacle played out I was sure that three wheels would fall off and I'd be taking another coupe years off from intent fandom. Then something wonderful and unexpected happened. Kirk Cousins. It was like a gift from the football gods. We still had a chance to keep building the team. I really liked that Scot and Jay pushed for him and I thought for sure this was an incredibly promising situation. They would grow together, win together, and maybe become something special. The, "you like that," game sealed it for me, Cousins was my favorite Redskins QB of all time, I believed in him, rooted for him, wanted him to be a Redskin for life.

Again, I know the FO played a role in losing him, and we really don't know the entire dynamic of why he wanted to leave, but looking back I feel betrayed by him that he didn't try to work it out and was content in getting what he could out of the organization through the Tag with no intention on building something here other than his value. All last season, and even immediately after his charity ever, I was in denial thinking they would work it out. That he wanted to be here but was playing coy trying to get the best contract he could, but that he wanted to be here.

Believe me, if it comes out that there was a lot of weird underhanded shit going on behind the scenes, which wouldn't surprise me about this organization, I will be just as disenchanted with the Redskins as I have been in the past. Even now I'm upset and want to know why they couldn't work things out with him. But from where I'm standing right now, it appears that Kirk Cousins was not invested in anything but his own career. Do I blame him as a man? No. But I am disgusted with him as a fan because he chose not to fight for me and the rest of the fans here. I also think he will always have marginal success if he doesn't learn to invest in those around him. I really do hope he learns that lesson the hard way.

Kirk is a good QB, but only good as his supporting cast is. That is true of any qb, but the special ones can make their teammates seem better than they are. Still Kirk is a good guy and I wish him well wherever he goes. The FO was too gun shy with him a few years ago and it cost them Kirk, but in their defense I can't really blame them either. They didn't have to treat him so shabbily though. If the MN rumors are true, he should excel. Very good WR corp, so he should shine like when he had Djax and Garcon!

Alex Smith in San Francisco started as a rookie on a team with few NFL caliber players, had head coach Nolan publicly calling him a wimp in year 3 while playing needing throwing shoulder surgery, then lost his job to Colin Kaepernick getting a concussion while having a career year. Through it all he said nothing negative to the media, soldiered on and was a great teammate. I think if Cousins had Smith's personality things would have been different.
