Alex Smith to miss 2019 Season

Per Multiple sources.

No surprise here, that was a gruesome injury. I wonder why he just doesn't hang it up? In 2020 he'll be what? 37?

He would be 36 years old when the season starts in 2020. We don't really know where he is at mentally right now, for all we know he may know that his injury is career ending and it hasn't been announced yet.

If that isn't known yet, then having an athlete's mentality he is most likely hoping that he makes it all the way back in 2020 and is able to play again, whether it is here, or somewhere else. The coming months should tell us plenty. I wonder truly how committed the skins are to Alex, and will they be willing to wait a whole year and just use a stop gap QB to keep the seat warm until Alex can come back, or if at some point this year they make the decision to move on, draft a QB of the future while they get the Alex situation sorted.

As far as Alex Smith goes, if he can pass a physical, i'm sure there will be a handful of teams interested in him as a backup / spot starter / stop gap QB. He will be 37 in 2021, not freakishly old for a QB these days when you see guys like Brees and Brady still slinging it in their 40's.

We will draft someone in the 1st or 2nd. With that investment in a high pick, and if he plays well, Alex will never play here again EVEN if he does make it back.

I am sure this was talked about, buried in some thread somewhere, but I do not want to go looking for it. What is the cap implications if Smith retires say at the most opportune time for the Redskins, say after 6/1/2019 or what is the best case scenario? Has this been talked about?

Terrible for Smith. Tough way to end a decent career. As a Skins fan I am only concerned with how the money end shakes out. Hopefully we do not end up even more screwed as a franchise because of it. Football wise He was not the answer.

Agreed. Smith wasn’t playing well at all, and the offense was badly held back by his play. Gruden needs a QB who can run the offense at a high level, and the ability to use the entire playbook.

Another Bruce Allen blunder, and Bruce Allen contract agreement.

The offense did NOT operate anywhere near the tempo and level that Cousins ran it. It was stagnant. Simple

Fitzmagic 2019!!!

He is a fairly realistic option cap wise.

We could tank in style.

It would instantaneously fix our problems at receiver.

With Fitzmagic, like Rex, EVERYBODY is open!

Not surprised at all. He wasn't really playing well at all anyway. Just hope the guy can resume a normal life again. Seems like a real good guy. He just wasn't a good QB for us.

So now I assume Colt will compete w/ a rookie.

Either way, the Redskins organization will be taking a Cap Hit [emoji19]

But if I understand what was said in another thread a few months ago, it will be a bit less of a Cap Hit in 2020 instead of Alex Smith retiring in 2019. If I am incorrect in any way, please, anyone chime in and please explain.

This really sucks for Smith. I have read several stories about Smith and based on the stories, I would assume Smith is not giving up on coming back, or at least not yet.. We might as well move forward as if Smith will never play again although, I would love for us to keep Smith in QB room to mentor our next rookie QB. Andy Reid and Mahomes kept mentioning Smith and how big role he played in mentoring Mahomes when people asked Andy and Mahomes about their success this season.

I believe your statement to be accurate. That is because after the end of year 3 of his contract, all guaranteed monies ($71 million) would have been met already.

Re: Alex Smith to miss 2019 Season

Honestly, I don't even care about the cap situation. That leg injury is so fucked up that I just want the guy to be able to live the rest of his life normally. Hopefully he doesn't have long term consequences from this. Not like we're winning the super bowl in the next 2 years anyways. Time to start stockpiling young talent and hoping we can be competitive in 2 or 3 years. Next year is probably a lost cause.

Re: Alex Smith to miss 2019 Season

Too bad for Smith, always hate to see a career end this way.

The organization will move on assuming he won't come back I'd assume. I'm guessing we go after an established QB in FA since Gruden won't have the time to groom and deal with the ups and downs that come with a rookie QB. Unless he wins this year he has to know he's finished in DC.

As much as I disagree with it, I expect the team to mortgage the future and try to get some talent in the door in an effort to get us to the playoffs so he can salvage his job. Expect us to be competitive in the top 3-5 QBs on the market along with other players along with a lot of reworked contracts to open up cap space. I really hate the concept, but that's what you get with lame duck coaches that don't have a strong GM pulling the trigger on personnel decisions.

There is no difference between a player retiring and a player being cut from a cap stand point. Only difference is a player that is cut, can sign with another team.

If a player 'un-retires' he stays with his parent team until he is traded, or, cut.

For Smith: If he is on the roster on 3/17/2019, his 2020 salary is fully guaranteed. If he is released before that day and designated a post 6/1 release, he will count $21.5 million against the cap. Even if he retires, it does not change the cap hit.

The most economical would be to release him in his final year. But, due to his current health, that option is not practical.

It looks like to me that the best balance of cap and dead would be to release Smith in 2020 and designate him a post 6/1 release. That is the end of his third year and all guaranteed money of $71m has been paid.

By releasing him near the end of the 2020 league year and designating him a post 6/1 release, the cap hit play out like this:

2020 Dead Cap: $5,400,000
2021 Dead Cap: $10,800,000
2020 Cap Savings: $16,000,000

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I thought this would be at least an entertaining idea: Rumor is that the Bengals will probably dump Dalton this offseason (or try to trade him) and, separately, rumor is that the Bengals want Bill Callahan. If they just want to dump him, would you "trade" Callahan for Dalton?

PS, in case you couldn't tell, it's a slow day.

There is no chance they trade for Dalton. They cannot afford to pay $40 million on QBs.

They can better spend money on a long term Brandon Scherff contract. And a few moderate priced free agents. S, OL, etc.

The max upside with Dalton is around 8 or 9 wins. No thanks. I don't want a QB that is just going to keep us competitive. We're just going to tread water w/ Dalton.

I want the nuclear option cut Smith now. Make all garunteed money hit the 2019 cap and have a clean slat in 2020. Unlike Bruce I don’t see this team being competitive and I don’t see a reason to spend money in free agency and waste a year of contract in a garbage year.

I’d like that too, but the only way Bruce and jay for it is if they were guaranteed to stay beyond 2020. No way they tank 2019 if they know their heads are on the chopping block.

That would require Bruce backing off this “we’re close” bullshit. As a side effect it would pretty much guarantee another year or even two of this current setup. So I’d have mixed feelings about it.

Alex Smith will count $21 million against the salary cap next season. Does not matter if he is on IR, retires or is released. The cap hit is $21 million.
Colt McCoy will count $3 million against next years cap. Then what do you do with Johnson?

If they trade and acquire Andy Dalton, the contract is also acquired and he will count $16 million against next years salary cap.

Without considering Johnson, that would tie up some $40 million in the QB position.

To give it perspective, Aaron Rodgers is the highest paid QB in the league today. His cap hit is $26 million.
