Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
Can't these new hires go into an off season thread??? He's been hired as an inside LB coach.. lol.
|
Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
His most recent three stops...
In 2011 he was named defensive coordinator of the Cowboys, when they ranked 16th in points allowed per game, and then the next year dropped to 24th in points allowed per game. He was then fired by Jason Garrett. He was then hired by the Saints as DC in 2013 when he had a strong defense, finishing 4th in points allowed per game. But in 2014 his defense tanked, finishing bottom five. He was then fired from New Orleans in 2015 on the day after the Kirk Cousins and Jay Gruden led Redskins hung a 47 burger on his defense, in a 47-14 defeat of the Saints. The next year he was hired by his brother Rex as D Coordinator of the Bills, then fired along with Rex at the end of the 2016 season. Hasn't coached since. Good job fellas. You got someone who represents no threat to Manusky, I'll say that. |
Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
Can he coach up LB's? That's all I care about.

He better be able too, it'd be hella pathetic if he could somehow manage to screw that up. |
Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
No one can coach up Mason Foster. Not even Mike Singletary.

We'll see. Last time he was a LB coach was under Belichick from 2000 - 2003. I mean that's certainly a plus. I guess I'd have to defer to Willie McGinest and Teddy Bruschi to tell me what they thought of him. But we don't have Belichick as our HC, so... |
Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
Meh. Rob Ryan's greatest accomplishment in life is that his Dad and brother didn't make him change his last name.

You've got it wrong, Mason Foster has the work ethic, he just doesn't have the talent/athleticism. And Zach Brown has the talent/athleticism, he just doesn't have the work ethic. |
Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
Meet the new D-coordinator for 2020.

He had the number 2 defense while at the saints. We haven't seen that since GW. |

Give him Devin White and Rueben Foster...let’s see how it goes. I’d lean he could get it done. |
Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
Ryan led a defensive unit in New Orleans that ranked No. 4 in the league in points-per-game and No. 2 in the league in passing defense in 2013. In the 2013 postseason, the Saints defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs who entered the game with the league’s No. 2 ranked offense.
During his two-year tenure as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator, Ryan worked with OLB Demarcus Ware who posted 10-plus sack seasons in both seasons. Ware finished No. 2 in the league in sacks in 2011 with 19.5, the second-most in a single season in his 12-year NFL career. Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
Because they switched from 3-4 to 4-3 the second year and he was only there for 3 years.

Who's they? They as in "not Rob Ryan?" Or Rob Ryan made the switch? |

That was the only year he had a top 10 defense in 12 years as s defensive coordinator. His defenses in the bottom half of the league in 10 of 12 years and 24th or worse 7 of those 12 years. As a defensive coordinator, he was atrocious. Maybe he is a LB guru, but my initial thought is this is an immense downgrade from Olivadotti |
Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
Just because you're not a great HC/Coordinator, does not mean you can't be good position coach. See Jim Tomsula.

Tomsula was a widely successful DL coach for years before stumbling into an HC position. when you've been an utter failure as a HC/Coordinator, and completely out of the league for years.... what evidence is there that you should be handed a position coach job? Or presumption that you'll do anything other than what you've done your entire career - fail? |

Well there you go then. Foster shouldn't even be out there to begin with. To me that is piss poor management of your team. Insert play making rookie who can run and the girlfriend beater. |

He never worked for Tampa Bay, he's got that going for him. They must've thought he was the best candidate that would actually come to Washington. I'm willing to see instead of just saying he sucks. |

Obviously he hasn't failed everywhere he's been or he wouldn't have been coaching for almost 30 years. Somehow as a society, we've come to the point where you are either the GOAT or you suck. And if you aren't the GOAT, you shouldn't be doing X job. That's BS.. The guy has been involved with two Super Bowl winning teams and has decades of experience. I think he's worthy of a position job. Give the guy a chance.. |

Your post proves my point. Ryan isn't some unknown commodity. We have 30 years of data on him. Its not like he's some young upcoming guy we should give a chance to because he's succeeded in lower roles so there is reason to think he could succeed here. He hasn't been an LB coach in over 15 years. And that was under belicheck so you could easily argue he was just reaping the benefits of being in a great coaching staff with great players as opposed do doing anything significant of his own merit. I would argue the only reason he's had the opportunities he's had is because of the reputation of his father and brother. He's benefitted from the Ryan name. Its quite telling that he's been out of the league entirely for 2 years and the best job he could find is as the linebackers coach on the most dysfunctional team in the league. Ryan is not bringing us hope or opportunity. He's a washed up HasBeen/NeverWas who offers zero upside. |
Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
I'm willing to give him a shot, because somehow he managed to finagle his way into 4 coordinators jobs despite below average results (maybe it was the family name?). But if he can't coach a position group he's done.
|
Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
Legit question. Would you rather have Joe Barry or Rob Ryan coaching the inside LBs?

He's done no matter what because Gruden is getting canned next year anyway. |

You willing to bet on that? I hope that's the case but we should know better by now then to bet on DS making a smart move. |

Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
Michael Phillips (beat Redskins RTD) happened to be in the same room as Rob yesterday when the news was announced...got a really quick interview:
https://www.richmond.com/sports/redskins/new-redskins-assistant-rob-ryan-we-re-gonna-be-fun/article_e75e1818-9ea0-53b6-ba36-f70c9d3c54c2.html Heard Phillips speak on local radio show coming into work and said Ryan sounded extremely excited to be on staff. Nice hearing especially after all the turmoil about people leaving. |
Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
Who would have ever thought Rob Ryan would bring excitement to this fan base lol

Re: Rob Ryan added to staff
I don't feel like these are jump over the moon, super exciting moves, but I see coaches who are vets (sans O'Connell) and quite simply, the guys before weren't getting it done. Maybe a some new voices were needed and we can see some improvement.
The only cringe I really got was the Special Teams coach replacement...Our Teams have been solid...Bruce chose to go with another "Tampa guy" who hasn't had success. I thought we could have done better there. |

If they draft a QB (probably will) in the 1st round and you match him with O'Connell then I'll get pumped again. |
