Redskins General 2020 NFL Draft Thread

Figure its close enough to the draft now to have its own thread. Assuming Trent is traded, what are your 5 biggest positions of need for us?

1. Edge (only cause I want CY)
2. OT
3. TE
4. CB
5. FS

Note - I suck at subject lines. My apologies. Forgot to include the word Draft.

I have the same exact list except, need to add a backup QB since Smith is a ?. Anthony Gordon from Washington State would be a nice pick up.

We literally have Jeremy Sprinkle and Hale Hedges as our top two tight ends right now.

1. LT (assuming Trent is out)
2. TE
3. CB (assuming Dunbar is out)
4. WR (obviously they're looking to get Haskins another weapon)
5. FS

Chase Young is a bonus and our reward for sucking so terribly during the season.

Re: Redskins General 2020 NFL Thread

Look, losing Trent is big and not having a left guard at this point is not good.

Sure talking Amari Cooper, K Drake is fine. But outside of TE (which is a major fucking need...we don’t have a TE1 or TE2 right now) I don’t want to talk about any other unit but Oline, LT and LG.

With Haskins entering 2nd year, Rivera and Kyle Smith better a have a plan at the left side of Oline. Schreff is back no matter what...thankfully. You can’t wait until the draft for Left Tackle.

If we didn't have the No. 2 pick with Chase sitting there, I'd put DE at No. 5 or 6 and bump everything up a notch. LB is another need imo.

I'm operating under the assumption they are going to bring back both Scherff and Flowers.

Scherff is a lock no matter what, if Flowers leaves I change LT to o-line as a need, since we would have to replace LT and LG.

AnonEmouse 03-07-2020 07:34 PM

Re: Redskins General 2020 NFL Thread

TW is likely gone so add in at least a 2nd round pick and I'd go best LT or TE at that pick then add RT, FS and CB in that order. But we likely pick up at least one starter in FA so take the one(s) we do get from that list. With 3 or 4 needs at least we can likely pick BPA all the way.

Warthog 03-07-2020 11:40 PM

Re: Redskins General 2020 NFL Draft Thread

Round 1 - Edge to get the BPA in the draft -CY
Round 2 - (-assuming Trent Williams trade)
TE -due to lack of TE draft pool
Round 3 - OT - replace Trent
Round 4. - WR #2
Round 5 - CB
Multiple picks for OT (especially) and WR to get a hit starter

Free Agents

1. TE - Hooper or Henry
1A. Both OG - Scherff AND Flowers
2. CB - BPA who is not Byron Jones or James Bradberry
3. FS - Boston
4. LB - ?
5. WR#2 - maybe a one year deal with an older, experienced WR to help transition to see if Harmon or new WR draft picks (multiple) can move up
6. OT - someone of reasonable cost to either replace LT or challenge Moses in case we can’t get a starter from multiple OT draft picks and UDFA

Re: Redskins General 2020 NFL Thread

Agreed. I'd go as far as to say bring in a vet OT once camp gets going if the picks/UDFAs don't project a starter. Picking up someone like Peters now would be expensive and might prove foolish/expensive if we find a diamond in the rookies. Same for WR.

Re: Redskins General 2020 NFL Thread

If Trent Williams is traded, left tackle is obviously the biggest need. There is no way that edge rusher is the biggest NEED on this team. That is just simple infatuation with Chase Young. Now if we are talking about best player available at number 2, it is likely Chase Young if they don't trade that pick a way for more picks. However, edge is not the biggest NEED. It's not even in the top 5.

1. LT
2. TE
3. CB
4. LB
5. S

This list assumes that Flowers and Scherff are here.

Chase You g has way too much potential to pass up. He is the best player available in the draft. Besides, Kerrigan is on the way down. If Chase lives up to his hype he will transform the defense.

LT is very important but having outstanding OT like Chris Samuels and Trent Williams hasn’t helped this team be a winner. The most important player is QB, then Edge, then OT.

I'm on the fence with whether we'll keep Flowers or not. I think the plan could be to plug in Wes Martin there and Flowers could end up in Cleveland back with Callahan.

Pass rush is always a need. Even if you think you're set, you can't pass up an elite talent there.

I think the plan is to bring back Flowers at a reasonable price. If he wants to leave and seek more money Wes Martin would probably be plan B.

Flower is obviously not worth a huge contract, but he's worth solid starter money. Really depends on what he wants to do.

Thought this was interesting. A ranking of the luckiest teams in 2019 when it comes to fumbles (i.e. who lost the fewest on O and gained the most on D)

We were middle of the pack, as we were good at recovering our own fumbles on offense but terrible at recovering fumbles on defense.

Ranked 6th on offense because we had 21 fumbles but we only lost 8.

Ranked 25th on defense because we only recovered 9 out of 23 opponents fumbles.

Ranked 15th in combined rankings. The Steelers were the luckiest team, the Chargers the unluckiest.

Agreed. I think drafting for need is a bad idea, but the question was - what are your 5 biggest positions of need. Edge isn't in the top 5, but if CY is there at # 2, and you aren't impressed with any trade offers, you take the consensus best player in the draft.

Agreed completely. I just don’t think the trade deals for our #2 spot will come to us (they’ll go to Detroit) or if they do they do, it just won’t be enough for Rivera.

Chase Young will make our entire DL elite, especially with Del Rio coaching. Add a new, much improved CB, LB and FS from FA and suddenly the defense goes from a weak and bottom-feeding part of our team and into a top 10 unit in Rivera’s first season as the Redskin’s HC.

Chase will even add to fan attendance!

TE, Oline, CB, S, QB.

So here's a hypothetical, when our 3rd round pick comes up and Jalen Hurts is still on the board (I know he probably won't), and he is the highest rated player on your board...are you taking him there?

Yes, Id go BPA still in R3.

Kyle Smith did a press conference a few weeks ago and stressed BPA. He also said some other interesting (but not controversial or non-traditional) things. I heard cut ups of it in the car but im pretty sure I heard him do the same thing everyone says, some variation of "we always go BPA ... but we also have to take into account the roster and needs". But instead he implied what happens in FA will somewhat effect who they draft ... sounds like "need" is a consideration to me. I would have to listen to it again, to be sure.
He sounded good though, instilled confidence he knows what he is doing.

Kyle Smith said the staff — including scouts — reviewed the players let go, Josh Norman, Paul Richardson and Jordan Reed. And ultimately made a decision when he and Ron Rivera got behind closed doors to make the final decision on fits #HTTR

Yeah I had the same feeling after hearing that as well from him. I know we always look forward to free agency and the draft in hopes that these new players will help turn things around for this team, but it definitely has a different feel this time around.

If Hurts is still there I'd say a trade might be best value. Do we really want a QB controversy as we'd have if we draft Tua?

What we want is competition and a competent backup. I'd be happy to see the Skins take Hurts in the third round.

Dan Snyder press release:

Due to health and travel concerns surrounding COVID-19, we have informed all of our scouts and coaches that they must return to their home bases and travel will be suspended until further notice,” Washington owner Daniel Snyder said in a statement issued Thursday morning. “The health and safety of our staff and players is our number one priority and we feel that these are the necessary precautions given the current circumstances.”

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/03/12/daniel-snyder-suspends-travel-for-team-employees/

Washington joins a (for now) short list of teams that have taken their scouts and coaches off the road. Every other team needs to follow suit, immediately

Free agency should be able to proceed, it's not a mass gathering like games or training camps, and the risks of being exposed during travel can be mitigated with masks.

With the draft, they may decide to do it with no players present, or behind closed doors / remotely.

I'm just thinking when it comes to FA is it the best time or a good look to start tossing around millions and millions of dollars given the public health crisis

While I hope you're right, I'm not so sure...I think it could be a few months at least. They're expecting so many to contract the virus that the health industry is not going to be able to keep up with how many are coming in sick...you may have people dying because of lack of proper care for it, whereas normally they wouldn't have. Not to mention, the amount of health professionals that contract it themselves that won't be there to help. They're saying this is just the beginning. I sure hope it doesn't get as bad as they are saying it could be.

Pandemic protocols last 1-2 months as long as the original conoravirus virus does not mutate (like in 1918 Spanish Flu). President needs to declare National Emergency and implement the Pandemic protocols sooner rather than later. He’s going to suffer criticism no matter what he does, but he needs to be BOLD and save lives.
