In memory of our REDSKINS
Person with knowledge of the situation confirms Washington football owner Dan Snyder and the team plan to announce name change Monday morning.
Mike Jones - USA TODAY So the end is official and coming within the hours, I want this thread to be positive. Name your favorite Redskins of all time Favorite moments / games / eras. I also want to say thank you Matty and everyone here for keeping me sane through the years, in a sense I grew up a lot with the Warpath.. I'm not sure if the site name will change but if it does I SALUTE this page!! And for one final time (can't believe I'm writing this) HAIL TO THE REDSKINS |
Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
My life long best friend just called me, we talked about this very thing.
It really is the end of an Era. Just no words really. I agree, one last time - HTTR. |

Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
My favorite Redskins were Mark Brunell, Stephen Davis, Champ Bailey, Marcus Washington, Randy Thomas, Mike Sellars...just too many to name. I also really liked Jeff George and remember how we had that "dream team" at one point in time and i remember my Dad telling me that with Jeff George's arm, we would see the great passing game again like in the 80's, but it was never to be.
My all time favorite Redskins moment as a fan was watching the Monday Night Miracle in 2005 when we came back to beat the Cowboys. That whole 2005 season was magic, i remember the "Five in a Row or We don't go", and when we started wearing the white on white uniforms because the guys believed it was good luck.... |
Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
RG3 beating the Cowboys in Dallas on Thanksgiving. Will always be my favorite Thanksgiving ever. And I love Thanksgiving.
Brunell to Moss × 2 The 5 game winning streak under Gibbs 2.0 to make the playoffs. Note - I was only 8 during our last super bowl. If I was old enough to remember it, that whole season would be my favorite. Sheer domination. |
Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
Whatever happens happens.
It's been 20 years of mostly misery for me, but HTTR will always be my rally cry. Greatest Redskin game I ever saw - 2005, got our asses kicked for 55 minutes by the Cowboys until Brunell finally trusted Moss. And Sean Taylor closed it out with a phenomenal hit on Patrick Crayton IIRC? Greatest Redskin game I ever saw in person - Kirk Cousins "You Like That" game. When it was 24-0 me and my friends all agreed if they grew the lead any more we leave. You all know what happened from there. S/N I still love those throwbacks and hope they don't disappear with the name change, but with the logo being what it is I highly doubt they ever return. Greatest Redskin to wear the gear in my lifetime? Sure, Chris Samuels and Trent Williams are up there, but for me it was Sean Taylor. 04, 05, and the first half of 2007 (the closest we've come to having a first team All-Pro in my span as a fan IMO) convinced me that he was putting his name in the conversation with the Reeds and Polamalu's of the time. He had the range of Reed and the instincts/power of Polamalu. I'm not sure we'll ever see another free safety play like that in a Redskins/whatever uniform again. And thanks to Matty for running this page, been a part of many forums over the years and this place has been a steady constant under your hand compared to everywhere else. In 2005 I was a sophomore in high school, now I'm past 30. Here's to another 15 years of talking football and bullshit with other knowledgeable fans. |

Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
Don't think I can root for the Washington Team any longer. I live in Florida so I will look at watching a local team and not have to pay through the nose for Direct TV to watch a team I won't "know" anymore.
Very sad. Only reason I kept watching from out of state was the History and memories of 50 years of fandom. Prolly ditch the NFL altogether for fishing. So on a positive note as the OP wanted, I got time now for my *other* passions without the BS |
Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
I’ve been a fan since 1971 and this a huge deal to me and old fans. All I got to say is FUCK DAN SNYDER!! Traitor, JKC would bitch slap this POS all over the field. This never would of happen w/ JKC. Fuck politics and sports, hypocrite sponsors, and the NFL.

Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
Some smatterings of how this is hitting me tonight:
-- I turn 51 in late August. My Dad gave me two choices growing up in Louisville Kentucky. Root for and watch the Washington Redskins, or don't watch football. When you're 6 years old, it's an easy choice. (And looking back -- maybe this should have been considered child abuse ... haha .. but hey ... it's one of the few things my Dad and I can truly connect over. He just turned 80.) -- I remember being in 1st grade in 1975, and checking out a paperback book from the library only because it had a photo of Billy Kilmer in a Redskins uniform on the cover (along with some other players I couldn't have cared less about). The book wasn't for first graders, but I didn't care. I checked it out anyway. -- I vaguely remember the QB battles between Kilmer and Theismann. I also wondered why our guys only got to wear one bar face masks, while other QB's wore 2 bar face masks. Like that douchebag Staubach. These are great matters of concern for a 7 and 8 year old. -- Being in Louisville meant it was a rare treat to get a Redskins game on TV. Usually we got the Bengals, or Bears, or because Paul Hornung was a Louisvillian, we got Green Bay Packers games ... completley annoying. But there's a large contingent of Packers fans here. And of course, the freakin' Cowboys were always on. Man I hate them. -- On Sundays, I would run to grab the newspaper, to get the TV listings, to see what games were being shown. When I saw the Redskins listed, it sent a jolt of happiness through me I can't describe. I'd watch half an hour of Victory at Sea, followed by NFL on CBS, before the 1:00 Skins game .... and seeing the burgundy and gold, and those iconic helmets with the Redskin on it .... man, pure rapture. -- I remember losing to Dallas by a point, and crying, and my Mom telling me to grow up, it's just a game, and me telling her she just didn't understand, and I was 10. -- My love of the Redskins is only surpassed by my hatred of the Cowboys. -- Life got MUCH better in the 80's. We got on TV more, and we won a lot more. -- Jack Kent Cooke was godlike to me. And he delivered Super Bowls. God bless that man. We all know our recent history, and the proliferation of TV showing all the games, made my experience of joy when I got to watch the Redskins disappear. But my love of the colors, the uni's, and especially the helmet, can all be traced to those early days, when I wasn't guaranteed to see them in any given week. I've been a fan for 45 years. I'll have to live to age 96, to root for whatever our new name will be, to EQUAL how much I have invested emotionally in the Redskins. So, no matter what comes, I can realistically say, I'll still be more of a Skins fan when I pass than a whatever-freakin-name-we-get-stuck-with this season. I want to be able to root for this team ... and see Chase Young, and Montez Sweat, terrorize Philly and Dallas and Daniel flippin Jones. I just don't know that I will care as much as I did when I was 6 years old, running to check the TV listings in the Sunday paper, in the faint hope that I got to see my Washington Redskins play on TV. Hail to the Redskins. Thank you for the memories. I will miss you. |
Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
Been a fan since the late 60's.
Favorite player(s) too many just to pick 1) - Sonny Jurgensen, Darrell Green, Sean Taylor, John Riggins, Dexter Manley, Art Monk, Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders, Clint Diddier, The HOGS. Favorite Game, Super Bowl XXII and every time we beat the Cowboys.... HTTR - will still be my favorite the team |

Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
The Modern NFL is just Bad .. the rules suck ..the refs suck .the commissioner is horrible .so it’s all been going bad for so long that at this point nothing surprises me . I have watched every game ( either at game , tv , vcr, Dvr radio) since 1969 ! The Glory years ! The Super Bowl win against Miami was the best .. all the cowboy wins were high points ! When Joe Gibbs first left that was end of an era ..then Snyder started his run and its been very hard to be a fan .. truth is since he took over it’s been redskin football in name only and now that has been taken away ... what’s left ?? There will be no switching teams for me .. I will still watch the new team with one eye open and will not be upset if my dvr does not record or I miss a game and at some point it will cease to be a passion of mine .. HTTR !

Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
Favorite player of all time is Sean Taylor. Anyone who lays a hit in the pro bowl like that is a winner. I’m so sad how his life ended and would love to see what he would have become if his career hasn’t been cut short.
I was born in ‘85 so I don’t remember much about our last super bowl win. However I do remember rushing home after church to scarf down lunch so I could watch my beloved Redskins. I remember the joy of bearing the Cowboys. Every. Time. We. Best. Those. @$$holes. I remember how the media always said the Cowboys were a super bowl contender and talking with much $h!t to Cowboys fans at school, and later at work, when they finished a mediocre 8-8, choked in December, and lost in the first round of the playoffs (if they made it that far). I remember Tony Romo’s botched point after attempt in the first round of the playoffs. I had never been as excited. Basically I think I‘be just always hated the Cowboys as equally as I’ve loved the Redskins because of the the boastful Cowboys fans who live in Virginia but never even been to Texas and only like the Cowboys because of their parents liking them because of the runs in the 70’s. Whatever the new name is, I’m still going to pull for them to kick the crap out of “America’s (mediocre) Team” each and every week! HTTR! |

Dont really go to games anymore). I loved the logo. I thought it was done with respect and honor. I will really miss that. Football side -- the name is changing but it doesnt mean the on field history gets erased. 2nd Quarter against the Broncos is still this teams history. |

Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
A very sad time within a sad time ...
Some of my favorite players: Billy Kilmer, Larry Brown, Charlie Taylor, Pete Wysocki (RIP), Art Monk, Riggo, Stephen Davis, Darrell Green, Jack Pardee (RIP), Bobby Mitchell (never saw him play, but he is huge in our history), Sammy Baugh (ditto), Ricky Sanders, and too many others to mention. Memories- tons. Dexter's hit on Danny White, Darrell Green's punt return/touchdown, Theismann batting down his own pass to prevent an interception, Jay Schroeder coming off the bench to beat the Giants after JT went down, etc. And I think it was in the NFC championship against the Falcons- Darrell left the field due to injury. When he returned, the camera followed him as he trotted through the tunnel and out to the field. The crowd at RFK roared. It was like watching NFL films in real time. Saw a fair number of games at both RFK and FedEx. I even braved the Vet twice (the legends are true and maybe understated). Also caught then at the old Giants Stadium 2x (decent fans btw) and once at that center of perdition known as Texas Stadium. Don't know what the future brings for me and the NFL. Hail to the Redskins! |

Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
Best memories
1. Super Bowl XXII Timmy Smith or Doug Williams take your pick amazing performances 2. The Seat Cushion Game Recent history RG3 rookie year. Last year I remember really being relevant. |
Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
Hail To The Redskins.
Remember rehearsing the fight song driving my bike in Paris when I started watching back in 2010. Haven't seen a lot of glory but I could never root for another team. Best memory by far is being on the field during warm ups, fist bumping Johnathan Allen and having my forehead against Chris Thompson facemask yelling how bad I wanted them to win... That was the infamous 40 -16 vs Giants game, but great memory. Man, the nights staying up until 5am to cheer this team on. Singing HTTR and wondering if I'm gonna wake the neighbors up... The memories ain't going away, and we'll always call the team in those memories the Redskins. Changing the name isn't time travelling. So one last time talking about the current team, but forever talking about the team I've been cheering for 10 years: Hail To The Redskins ! |
Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
Childhood memories:
Collecting the player trading cups you got when you bought large Slurpee at 7-11. Bumper stickers “I root for Washington, I like Sonny!” or Billy if you didn’t understand Sonny was better. Collecting (which I still have) Redskins Sunoco glass cups. Memories: Watching the 1/22/83 Redskins beat Cowboys in NFC Championship game on way to first Supbowl ring. Watched with two of my friends that’s huge cowboy fans. They wanted to watch it with me to bust my chops. I agreed and ran my mouth the entire game. That was better than winning the Super Bowl because we were the two best teams that year and I remember friends from all over the country telling me they watched that game eventhough they were not Redskins fans and were impressed. Finally some respect for my Skinnies. |

Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
So many memories. The rage mob that's cancelling our identity just doesn't understand how being a Redskins fan is part of your life, part of who you are.
My memories, good and bad: *The first Super Bowl I watched on TV was Super Bowl XXII, our amazing win over the Broncos. I was already a Redskins fan and that was thrilling. *Growing up, there were no Ravens and although in PA, the Redskins were the closest team to me in miles, so I got to watch them on CBS EVERY WEEK. Those were the days... *Watching Darrell Green win the NFL's Fastest Man competitions year after year. His battles with Willie Gault and others like Herschel Walker and Rod Woodson. *Charles Mann (with his TV dinner commercials) and Dexter Manley were the greatest 1-2 punch on a D-line that I ever saw. *The Posse: Monk, Clark, Sanders. Best WR trio ever? *Timmy Smith's one good game. Great timing, kid. *The HOGS. *Our 1991 Super Bowl run...I was in 7th grade. We had paper grocery bag book covers and I was tracking their W-L record on it. It was amazing as we were 11-0 before our first loss! Then, we won the Super Bowl. I believe, and some sports writers even agree, that the 1991 Redskins was the greatest team in NFL history. Their scoring offense and dominant defense, no team had such a great team on BOTH sides of the ball. For some reason, that win over the Falcons sticks in my memory. I don't remember seeing the Redskins score that many points (56) in another game. *The optimism of Steve Spurrier coming in...too bad it didn't work. *Health Shuler was supposed to be a GREAT QB. I still resent him to this day. :D *Gus Frerotte, you idiot. *Michael Westbrook beating up a teammate in practice. *Clinton Portis' first run as a Redskins, a 64-yard TD against the Bucs. *Even with the Super Bowl teams, I think my favorite squad was the years with Portis, Moss, Cooley, Sean...that team had so many personalities and was just so much fun to watch. All of CP's costumes were classic! Sheriff Gonna Getcha, Spanky Janky, Dr. Do Itch Big...HA! *Speaking of...that run to the playoffs where we had to win every game to get in. I hated the white-on-white uniforms, but they were good luck that year. Gibbs coming back is something I'll always be thankful for even if he didn't have enough time to turn it completely around. Losing Sean put a huge dent in the plan. *Jason Campbell, I was a big fan...I thought he was going to be really good and he had moments. On the flip side, I thought Patrick Ramsey got WAY TOO MANY chances...why is he still in? *Monday Night, Mark Brunell to Santana Moss, TWICE for the win. I stayed up and watched to the end thankfully. I have always stayed up and watched every snap of every Sunday and Monday Night games, even if we're getting blown out and even as an adult who had to get to work in a few hours. *Thank you for 2012 RG3, it was a magical year and I'm still a fan of you. *I took my son to Fan Appreciation Day in 2012. RG3 and Cousins were rookies. We met the Hoggettes and cheerleaders. This was also the first time I actually saw the Redskins live and in person in my lifetime. *My first game in person...also with my son, on his birthday last year. They came back and won with seconds to go...best birthday gift EVER. *Area 51. Landry could not cover but damn, he and Taylor were downright scary with the hits they punished opponents with. *LaRon Landry turning into the Hulk. (and losing all ability to play effectively in the process). *The Haynesworth saga. Get up you fat slob. *London Fletcher's leadership. Great player, great man. *The 24-0 comeback game vs. Bucs. I liked that. *Adrian Peterson is a Redskin! Most recent memory, drafting Chase Young. I can't wait to see him on the field. *Alex Smith. I just watched the E60 on his injury last night, I could not have imagined his leg looked like that during the surgeries, gruesome. I am a Christian and I admit it, I sincerely prayed a lot for Alex that year, and I've never prayed for any other pro athlete before. It was just heartbreaking, he's such a great person as well as QB. *And of course, watching Sean Taylor play. He was the most incredible player I have ever watched. No game was lost yet if he was on the field. |
Re: In memory of our REDSKINS
I was a football fan as a kid but didn't have a team until SB XVII. Watching Riggins tear it up that night had me hooked for life.
The last 20 years though under Snyder has definitely left me less passionate for the team and at this point I don't have much hope for any sustained success as long as he's owner. Kind of feels like Rivera is our last hope. |
