Browns pregame thread
I actually looked into tickets for this game, but the cost is STUPID...
Browns are favored by 6, we just got rolled by one Sooner Heisman, will it happen again this week? |
Re: Browns pregame thread
I'm gonna have a hard time picking us as favorites all season. That handicap seems about right to me. Definitely a winnable game but I wouldn't think we were favorites.
|
Re: Browns pregame thread
Browns are a roller coaster. Who knows which team will show up.
|
Re: Browns pregame thread
Is it just me or is this year every team great "on paper" that we play? Typically, I can say, "Oh, there's a garbage team, we should be competitive." This year, not-so-much.
Browns are a train wreck, but a TALENTED train wreck. I read somewhere their entire offensive line, save that one rookie, is ranked in the top ten, so I don't see us suddenly destroying their line either. |
Re: Browns pregame thread
And Myles Garrett against Geron Christian says it all.

I think Rivera and/or Matsoko want to see what Geron can do. I'm pretty sure if he continues to play like the last 2 games, it will be his last year with the team. |
Re: Browns pregame thread
I thought Geron played okay w Chandler Jones. He is still young and drafted as a project, but I think he is depth chart/spot starter at best
Okay = able to stand in front of a guy and not get beat .5 seconds after the snap. |
Browns pregame thread
I hope that Turner changes his game plan from last week. When the offense ran a up-tempo, fast, no huddle offense, Haskins and the offense shined. Why not keep doing it?
The team did worse when they ran the run-heavy, slow offense of Gruden and Callahan. I mean a couple sets they ran the predictable “run, run and pass, punt” offense from last year - with the same results! Our OL is not nearly strong enough to face a defense where the play calling is even vaguely predictable. Keep it fast and move the ball around and Haskins seems to thrive because that’s how they played when he was at Ohio State! It’s also time to start playing guys to see if they’ve got the juice to be starters next year. I’d like to see Cam Sims as the #2 Wr. Cam did great on ST against the Cardinals. Now let’s see if he can take the next step up as the starting WR. Maybe after 3 years he’s gotten over his stone hands reputation. Also, let’s get the ball to STEVE Sims as he caught 3 passes the last game. Just take him out if the punt and kickoff receiver. He flunked that audition with a fumble and NO good run backs. I’d really like to see FA being brought off the street for the OL. After 3 years, Christian is going to be a bust. Give him a few more games to blow it and move on. If you’re giving certain players an audition for the team, be willing to bring guys off the street the same option. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Browns pregame thread
Fast/no huddle O - agreed as long as you are sustaining drives. Otherwise the D gets gassed.
Re reps, seems to me many teams are treating games 1-3 as a kid of preseason for the back ups, particularly with ST reps. I expect 2 things over the next 2 weeks; guys on the bubble at the end of training camp who aren't showing up in games getting bumped for PS guys that are bringing it, and FA's getting try-outs for those backup positions (or even poor starters?) that there aren't PS guys to step up (or are not good enough yet). I'm not sure getting more guys reps at WR improves Haskins play, but you never know. Shoring up the OL is more likely to help there. I'm thinking there's still possibilities for trades in week 3/4 as coaches settle on what they have as starting 22 + ST and everyone else becomes surplus under the right circumstances. Problem for us is our only real trade capital is draft picks and I can't see us getting value for those with a) what's likely to be brought in by trade and b) RR's apparent philosophy to build primarily through the draft. More likely to see cusp players traded out for picks to use next year. i.e. Settle might fetch a decent return and he's all but surplus given we have Payne, Allen and Ionnidas in the rotation. |
Re: Browns pregame thread
The Browns are loaded with talent but something isn't right with that team. It's possible we could win this game if the Browns to help us out with a couple of turnovers.

Re: Browns pregame thread
Two players who have been criticized a lot: Dwayne Haskins and Troy Apke. I think most of the criticism of each of them has been valid and fair. I also think that if you expect RR to move on from these two anytime soon you're going to be disappointed. Coach Rivera has made it clear that many of our current players have a lot of work to do to become the quality players he hopes they become. Prior to the start of this season he specifically named Haskins and Apke as the players who were hurt most in their development because there was no true training camp or any preseason games. Obviously, RR thinks these two men have the potential to be very good players and that they need to play to get to that point. So hang in there, fellow fans because RR is likely to be more patient with them than we are capable of being.

Re: Browns pregame thread
How are the Browns 7 points favorite? Lil surprised.
With me, it’s the same all season: Oline and Haskins have to play decent for us to win. |
Re: Browns pregame thread
Just watched Bengals @ Browns.
Stopping the run is going to be key, both Chubb and Hunt are legit fast and quite tough to bring down ! We'll have to display disciplined tackling. Luckily enough our Dline plays the run well, Young has been making nice plays against the run. Their pass rush is legit too. |
Re: Browns pregame thread
Seems like the public believe Browns defense will dominate WFT this Sunday. I have Buffalo defense in one of my FFL and I'm looking to pick up another defense just for this Sunday and apparently Browns is one of the top choices for this Sunday.. Really?? I just don't see it.
How are the Browns 7 points favorite? Lil surprised.
Their offense is so much better than ours. Getting Hooper for them was huge. Chubb/Hunt is a formidable 1-2 punch. They also upgraded their oline and Mayfield is focused. I'd be surprised if we cover the 7. Just don't think we have the horses to stay in this one.

He sure is. The not calling time outs at the end of the game last week was telling a lot about how long term his approach is. He's not freaking out about losing games this year. Haskins has shown he's coachable and can make good throws, we know QB take time to transition to the NFL, and considering how awful a coaching situation he was in last year, he's basically a rookie IMO. Apke is another story for me. I'm willing to trust RR all you want, but having bad vision, taking awful angles, and missing tackles are really killers for a FS... It's not like he's being flashy but making mental mistakes and forgetting his assignments. He's just playing out of position. |
Re: Browns pregame thread
30% 3rd down conversion rate -- we are dead last in the league. We need to improve on that to get into a rythme on offense.
Haskins - slants,/crosses/drags ... call passing plays where it is out in front of Haskins and he can see if the receiver won the route. Hes much more comfortable in up tempo when its quick hits like slants. of course, most of the time the D is playing soft bc we are playing catch up. Gibson/McKissic - get them the ball in space. They are 4/9 on completions. We released Peterson and went with these guys bc Turner was supposed to work our guys out of the backfield. TE Thomas - heard a Browns beat reporter say their LB corps is the defensive weak link. Hopefully Thomas is a big part of Sunday's gameplan. |

No smarts and agility to do that and you're a goner regardless of your pursuit angles. OTOH after years in college with a top school, he should be better on angles by now already. He was supposed to be a good tackler in college, so what happened when he came here? Just can't step up to the pro's? I'm inclined to give him some rope like all of them, having had good coaches show faith and not having a preseason. But he has to improve week on week or Davis will likely be be in his slot by week 16. |
Re: Browns pregame thread
The 6'1", 200-pound Troy Apke made a name for himself at the NFLPA game and then again at the NFL Scouting Combine, but we're still talking about a player who was an afterthought on film. Unless he can quickly improve his diagnosing skills and football IQ, he'll just be a track guy in pads.
POSITIVES —Blew up the combine with a 4.34 in the 40-yard dash, 41-inch vertical jump and 6.56-second three-cone. —Height, weight, speed prospect teams will hope can develop. —Doesn't get scared in run support. —Has ability to match up with tight ends at the line. —Works like a smaller linebacker against the run and is active. NEGATIVES —Inconsistent producer and gets lost in space. —Lots of missed tackles on tape from poor technique (dipping head). —Football IQ appears low based on timing, angles and alignment. —Stiff through transitions and moves more like a sprinter than a safety. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2769613-troy-apke-nfl-draft-2018-scouting-report-for-washington-redskins-pick Apke was always a project and went higher than expected/deserved bc he ran a 4.34 40. |

Not a good scouting report, hopefully it's not indicative of his future. Time will tell if he was a wasted pick. |

Yeah, im fine taking a project guy in the 4th that has measurables like Apke has. But 4th was higher than most had him. Im not sure he will be a starter in this league but he should find a home on STs and be a serviceable back up. not a wasted or lost pick. (but give me a G or C in the 3-5 rounds every time). -------------------------- If Jack Conklin is back I take the Browns. Hubbard vs. Sweat while worrying about their other pass rushers is going to spell a long day for our offense. That’s my key this week. Sweat is the kind of guy that Hubbard has a hard time with. I’m not terrified of their Dline. Our Oline has good practice in front of them each day with our line, but we can’t be 3rd and plus 5 against them and I’m confident we can run on them this is an interesting matchup overall though. Their big weapon is Terry McLaurin who will matchup against someone that knows him really well Denzel Ward. Advantage Ward. The Washington plays call could give us problems. They seem to love crossing routes. Haskins can hit a slant better than anyone, but he makes a lot of rookie type mistakes downfield. We have a penchant for giving those up crossers and slants too easily and those routes expose our personnel flaws. They have a 3rd down back that is pretty good McKissick. He’s a matchup problem for us. Haskins in many ways is like Baker. Looks fabulous one week throws are off the next. He misses high a lot. They have major line issues and will lineup a guy against Myles that may not be on NFL roster next season. Think about it That alone could Be worth 7 points. they have started slowly both weeks. They can’t do that this week. Facing Chubb and Hunt with a deficit is lights out for you. If it weren’t for a few of their dudes on the Dline this could be arguably the worst roster in the NFL and they are getting used to new system as well like we are. If Conklin is back I’m thinking we are 27-17 winner. And I’m being nice http://thebrownsboard.com/topic/58392-browns-7-v-washington-football-team/ ^^ a good info fan post from our neighbors up north. Didnt know they were without Conklin. |
