What happens with Kyle Smith?
What do you guys think happens with Kyle Smith? Think he stays? I think his contract expires in June.

Promote him to GM already! |

He's done a terrible job, name one member of this year's draft class who has contributed to the squad this year. Why wait? Fire his ass already so we can get a head start on finding a new lackey for Ron. |

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
You kiss his ass and give him whatever he wants, he’s been our best GM since Beathard.
Jonathan Allen Daron Payne Tim Settle Montez Sweat Chase Young Cole Holcomb Antonio Gibson Kam Curl Terry McLaurin Jimmy Moreland Kelvin Harmon Etc, etc |

Jonathan Allen Daron Payne Tim Settle Montez Sweat Chase Young Cole Holcomb Antonio Gibson Kam Curl Terry McLaurin Jimmy Moreland Kelvin Harmon Etc, etc
Yeah those are all good picks it seems, but if you are going to give him credit for all those, you have to also acknowledge Derrius Guice Geron Christian Sr Troy Apke Shaun Dion Hamilton Greg Stroman Trey Quinn Dwayne Haskins Bryce Love Wes Martin Ross Pierschbacher Jordan Brailford Etc, etc |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Can't hit on them all though, and he's by all accounts been VERY good. Danny would be an absolute moron to let him walk, but it's all going to revolve around his working relationship with Rivera.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Do not disrespect Vinny like that SF
|
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Dwayne Haskins
Bryce Love Wes Martin Ross Pierschbacher Jordan Brailford Geron Christian Sr Troy Apke Shaun Dion Hamilton Greg Stroman Smith-Williams Khaleke Hudson Ryan Anderson Keith Ismael AGG S. Charles They are all still on the roster or IR, the jury is still out on some of them, some have improved and some have shown flashes. What do you want 1000%? Show me a GM who has done better in 3-4 years what Smith has done. Guice and Haskins came with a warning and he took a chance or was overruled (Haskins by Snider) Brailford they liked, it was a numbers game and now plays for the Vikings. Quinn is with Jacksonville with 35 catches and 2 TD's. Both Sims, Smith-Williams, Strohman, Martin, Christian, Hudson and even Haskins have shown flashes, but not in a consistent basis. Not everyone is McLaurin. I would say the only bust of this group is Apke. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
They would be fucking stupid to let Smith walk, what do Houston, Detroit and Jacksonville have in common? Shitty retread GM's that somehow resurface, if you don't know what they have in Smith, then others do and will pounce on him.
Article tease: Smith is the main force behind most of the young talent that has the league talking and one of the main reasons why head coach Ron Rivera took the job. Rivera has said in previous interviews that Smith’s promotion is something that he and owner Daniel Snyder would need to discuss but has liked the work that he has done leading up to this year. The only catch on moving slowly on this situation is another team could swoop in and steal Kyle away. His contract is believed to expire in June of 2021. Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
If Kyle was responsible for the draft picks of the last 3 years, then of course they need to figure out a way to retain him. However, I wasn't in the building so I don't know who was most responsible... What about Doug Williams, Jay Gruden, Bruce Allen, and Dan Snyder? I could never figure out who was calling the shots, and it was always portrayed as a collective effort.

If you read John Keim, he has mentioned many times Kyle as the main person for picking the players. Not a Keim article but read who the architect for the last 3 drafts has been. Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
We are getting better as an organization, I'm gonna go full positive here, and assume he stays.
Also, everything I read, says him and Rivera had a good working relationship. Let's officially grow-up and make KS the GM. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Really hope they make him GM soon. He has a keen eye for talent for sure. Happy with his work here and feel he would make a great GM.

Your point is still valid though, and he still did a really good job. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
If Kyle has been the architect, then I do hope they keep him, promote him... My point was only that for the last 2-3 years nobody knew who was in charge of making the calls for the draft or free agency. And when the questions were asked, everybody always said it was just a team effort, a collective decision, etc... Somehow (maybe it was Kyle) they have done a pretty good job with the last 3 drafts. Whatever the recipe has been, I hope they continue it. If that means retain/promote Kyle, then do it.

Chief, I'd feel pretty confident stating that your football comments are top 5 on this site, among a large majority of us, if not all of us. You have a license to say whatever the eff you want to. You have a sh&t ton of credibility points available. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
We’ve lost some of the top current coaches in the NFL. I’m not about to lose the best talent evaluator in the NFL (yes, he has proven to be the best).
Kyle Shanarat (fired w/ his GM/coach daddy who couldn’t pick defensive players or coaches, his downfall) Matt LaFleur left when Shanarat was fired Sean McVay came to Washington with Shanarat but was retained by Gruden Arthur Smith OC Titans, the son of Fedex founder Fred Smith, Gibbs brought him as a QC assistant for 2 years. He will probably be an NFL coach next year Kevin O’Connell will also probably be a head coach candidate next year. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
It would be a surprise if Smith isn't retained but I guess that's up to Ron.
|
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Losing Kyle Smith would be another terrible mistake by this organization.
|
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Keep him.
|
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
I can't imagine them not offering him another contract but surprised they have not done so already, along with a promotion ie. GM. Maybe he's not been a "YES MAN" for Snyder, so Dan has somewhat held him back. Still anxious to see when and what this report on Snyder shows...even if it doesn't force him out...it may push him further out on the football operations and decisions...hopefully.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Losing Smith would be on the same level as losing John Schneider who went on to help the Packers and then is the architect of the Seattle Seahawks last 10 year run as GM
|
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
On the one hand re-signing him before his contract is up makes sense in avoiding seeing him poached, but on the other, with the college season messed up and so the scouting period is probably going to run onto spring, maybe Ron wants to see what plan he comes up with for the draft before re-signing him?

I'm disappointed nobody took the bait earlier but seriously this isn't a good debate. Smith has been as good, if not better, than anybody who has worked for the team in the last 30 years. He will be extended, and if he isn't my faith in Rivera will drastically plummet. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Oh .. I took double take at your post but realized it was sarcastic... 😀 we need Smith

I tried to add fuel to the fire, but no one took the bite there either. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
I think he'll stay on as GM.
Rivera can't do everything and Smith has proven he can handle the job. By working together Smith can focus on picking the players that mesh well with Rivera's culture and Rivera can focus on catching them. Whether or not Ron agrees with that will determine Smith's fate. |

My inclusion of Southpark was my attempt to say that tongue in cheek. I'll just remove the last part for the sanctity of the thread. Here's to Chief staying in my top 5 (I know this is a significant honor to him lol) and to us keeping Kyle Smith, hopefully as the GM. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
I'm don't think the GM title is necessary. He's already the VP of player personnel, meaning he's essentially running the show personnel wise. Jason Wright is the team President, so he oversees the business side of things. Not sure what making him the GM would do really unless you just like the name of it better.

I'd just like us to be normal. I like GM better. By not giving him that title it's like they're holding back. Also VP is so generic. The team probably has at least 3 "VPS" of [insert title]. |

I agree. He's doing the job, and doing it well. Give him the title. |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
I'd rather call him grand poobah of picking football players
Fancy and descriptive, I'm sure he'll like it |
Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Who's the president of player personnel?
I only ask to know what his role in the process is, because I was operating under the assumption Rivera/Smith are the decision making duo. |
