From the article: The Commanders current front office, including general manager Martin Mayhew, and Executive VP of Football/Player Personnel Marty Hurney, will remain on staff through the search process, officials said. The new head of football operations and head coach will determine their long-term futures with the Commanders, team officials told ESPN. |

I am not sure I understand the logic there. |

Right I guess I don't understand why a subordinate is playing a role in this decision? |
Re: Ron Rivera fired
"Head of Football Operation", doesn't sound like a subordinate position.

I was referring to just the HC in my question not the Head. I get the Head but not sure I understand why the HC is involved. Just looking for a reason why that was all. |
Re: Ron Rivera fired
If EB is still here nothing has changed ... he is a joke and should be working at jiffy lube with Sam and Jamf ...

EB will be their manager at Jiffy Lube. They both need close supervision, tough love, firm but fair. |

LOL, truly. Never retreat. |
Re: Ron Rivera fired
Not targeting anyone but the attention to detail in this thread is lacking.
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/39264819/ron-rivera-fired-former-gms-advise-commanders-overhaul The link clearly says Bob Myers (former Warriors GM - won 4 titles/2 Finals losses in the last 10ish years) and Rick Spielman (former Vikings GM for 10+ seasons) are going to lead the search for a new Head of Football Ops/GM/HC. Whoever they hire will determine the fates of the rest of the staff including Hurney/Mayhew (who I both assume will be gone). |
Re: Ron Rivera fired
"I want to thank Ron and his wife Stephanie for all they did for the Commanders and DMV community, especially during the ownership transition," Commanders Managing Partner Josh Harris said in a statement. "Ron helped navigate this organization through some challenging times. He is a good man and thoughtful leader who has positively contributed to this organization and the NFL. I wish the Rivera family nothing but the best moving forward."
Harris keeping it classy, good job. Say what you want about the results but I think Ron still remains a respected figure in the NFL community. Probably won't get any more offers but I think people will respect him for the 3 years he put in under Snyder. This last year was a bad stain on the resume but his first 3 we were consistently around average/mediocre. |

Ron is a great guy, just didn't get it done here, just like everyone else in the Snyder era. Wish him the best.

Preach. He guided us through a ton of off-the-field bullshit too. Snyder could've hired Andy Reid and it wouldn't have worked out. |
Re: Ron Rivera fired
See Mr Synder? That is class and you'll never get what that means.
2 press releases today and both more meaningful than anything put out by Snyder is his entire tenure as owner. |
Re: Ron Rivera fired
Ron maybe a nice guy, but he had no fucking business being final say especially with the roster. Complete clown with his decisions
He handed us one of the worst season in franchise history. Sorry, Jay Gruden was a better coach |

I think he gets one more go round as HC. Like you said, everyone knows you can't win under Snyder and I don't think anyone outside of the fans is really going to blame him for his lame duck year with new ownership....I might be wrong but I think he gets one more stop |

Nah, I think Rivera has a front-office position written all over him (not here). I think he'll stay involved in football, but not as H.C. |

I don't know why he would get another shot as HC. He failed miserably here and, as GM, he left the cupboard bare. |

Re: Ron Rivera fired
listening to Harris today reminds me that we truly have an adult in charge.

Re: Ron Rivera fired
In Carolina Ron was just over 50% in wins and here much worse. Between both teams he is 102-103-2. I'm sure Snyder didn't help but Snyder was not in Carolina.
|
Re: Ron Rivera fired
In one of his last press conferences, it sounded like he was hoping to get back to coaching on the defensive side of the ball. It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up as a DC somewhere.

Ron the coach can blame Ron the GM for the lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball this year, but it was clear he looked overmatched after JDR was fired. I'm sure he can find a DC job if he wants one, if not maybe he retires. Definitely no HC jobs coming this offseason with his track record of 3 winning seasons out of 13. |
Re: Ron Rivera fired
Lotta lowlights from the Rivera era, but there were definitely some highlights too. MNF win against the 11-0 Steelers? Check.
Ron getting choked up about the death of his mom after we ended the Eagles perfect start on MNF in 2022? Check. This is why you treat people with courtesy and respect. I think this absolutely dumpster fire of a season has made people forget - for 3 years his players fought hard for Ron. Yes we lost more than we won, but we can say that about every coach who ever worked for Dan Snyder. Ron gave us enough flashes every year to get us hopeful about the direction of the team and it was only this year that everything fell apart, and even with the riverboat sinking he left us in great position for the future. So thanks for everything and good luck Ron. |
Re: Ron Rivera fired
When Ron was first hired in 2020 I paid close attention to his first few sentences......and of course he didn't accomplish anything he said he wanted to accomplish....

Incorrect. It is a smart move. They wait to see if he gets hired as a HC, if he does, we get a pick in 2025 I believe under the NFLs minority hire/development program. If we just cut him loose, we wouldn't. We can always cut him loose later if he isn't picked up. |
