OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
What is the overall take; positives and negatives on our first preseason game?
I think everyone would agree that Ramsey had a poor showing even against the Panthers 2nd and 3rd stringers. I know it is preseason, but he showed a jumpy nervous side of himself that reminded me of a preseason with Spurrier. I have confidence that Ramsey will calm down. His WR's were running solid routes and his OL played extremely well for the most part. I was impressed with Betts, Antonio Brown, Nehemiah Broughton, Mark Brunnell, Jason Campbell, Mike Sellers, Pierson Prioleau, Omar Stoutmire, Casey Rabach, Kevin Dyson, David Patten, Santana Moss and Zak Keasey. I was quite disapointed in Patrick Ramsey, Ade Jimoh and Darnerrian McCants. The offense struggled almost the entire time Ramsey was in control whether it was against first or second team defense. The team as a whole and individually played quite well for a 1st preseason game. Please feel free to post your obsevations and thanks for voting for my dog #17 Doug Williams: http://www.petboro.com/petvote.aspx?id=385 |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
ade is pissing me off, i don't care how good he is at STs
Now positives is, DIRTBAGS ARE HERE!!!!. they just played the best d-line in the league and gave ramsey all the time he needs, "the worst" player on our line (dockery) took jenkins to the ground! that is amazing and that is my play of the game, to the ground, mr 98 on madden himself to the ground! HAIL TO THE REDSKINS AND HAIL Bugezzzz Patrick will do better Friday, i like darrell green reporting from the sidelines |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
Green on the sidelines was great. Wish he'd go suit up and play a few downs that'd be even better!
|
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
What Williams has said about needing good corners to make his defense work is ABSOLUTELY TRUE!
Ramsey is going to need the entire preseason (at least) to adjust to his new wideouts. Our o-line looked fantastic against a very good defense. Our run defense didn't look bad. With our real starting RB's, Nemo on third down, and our starters back on defense, the game may have looked much different. |

I said that when ADE sucked it up. |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
I thought our backfield was pretty impressive catching the ball out of the backfield. Brunell for sure has zip on his ball. Sean Taylor is great, he blew alot of blocks, was flying to the ball, overan a few plays ... We didn't seem to get alot of pressure on the QB, and a few sacks were missed, so I don't think the D looked all that great, I mean, the first team Panthers scored no problem...
|
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
Offensive line looked great in pass protection. Run blocking didn't look that impressive, but it seems obvious to me that the Skins weren't focusing on the running game this week. Gibbs only called 19 handoffs the entire game, he usually tries to give 25 carries to Portis alone. I don't think the coaching staff emphasized getting the run on track this week. I think they went into the game with the intention of working on the passing game.
Of course, when you're not trying to run much, you end up with a lot of 2nd and long and 3rd and long situations. That made it tougher on the QBs. In the regular season, Gibbs figures to call a lot more running plays. Ramsey was 8-12, although shaky on a few throws. But if you combine a 66% completion percentage with a decent running game, you've got yourself a mediocre offense that can at least move the chains. Combine that with a decent defense, and the team can win some games. I want to see those corners get healthy though. Gregg Williams can't operate without them, as we saw last night. I definitely want to see Ramsey look better, but I think it's important to remember that the threat of having Portis in the backfield goes a long way towards helping a QB find space. Once Gibbs decides to call the game like he normally would, I think we'll see some overall improvement in the offense. The Skins are still a run-first squad, and we didn't even try to use our #1 weapon last night, Clinton Portis. |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
To me, the offense looked much improved. We didn't put up points, but the schemes looked so much better. We often saw a 3 wide look, the Oline looked great, the receivers looked pretty mediocre (minus McCants, and our TE/Hbacks.)
Williams defense is scaring me. Granted we had what, 7 starters missing from the lineup? I saw what has been scaring me all offseason. Walt Harris getting owned a few times. I hope Rogers is ready soon! I still think Ramsey needs some time, I wanted to see Ramsey to McCants. They seem to have a good rapport and its one of the few receivers he's still comfortable with. EDIT: Oh, btw. Nemo may end up being the steal of the draft. I really liked 36 last year and I like 36 again this year! |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
Me too man. Nemo was a COMPLETE beast. I can't wait to see him running next week too...
|
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
I also have to say, Brunell didn't look THAT bad last night.
|
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
That's one of the very first things I wanted to check out today; How many were going to have any compliments about the play of Brunell espically after he took such a trashing during the off-season
|
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
How about that Nemo!!!!
Ramsey a disapppointment Did Brunell look that good because he went against the Panther's 2nd string? With the head Dirtbag back in action (Jansen) I knew our O line would improve. D is not a concern with all the starters out.....still if the injury bug bites (and I hope it doesn't) our depth will be a concern that's for sure.......... I'll say Campbell's poor showing first nfl game jitters.......... |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
campbell i felt did well,
guys, Ramsey played like a good QB toward the end of the season last yera. I watched and reviewed the game and saw that ramsey would never hold the ball more than 3 seconds, even if he didn't have pressure, it was almost like he wanted to get the ball out as quickly as possible. He wouldn't let the plays develope and passed underneath. On playbook on NFL network during the offseason they showed Ramsey and they pointed out he throws to the closest receiver and doesn't think about where the first down was. Ramsey played well but he didn't play smart. With the exception of the intercetion and a pass overthrown to patten he got the ball where he wanted it to go, they weren't the right decisions however, this was most seen when he threw the ball to moss, i mean wtf, moss was 3 yards away and we needed like 5, cmon that is both ramsey and moss, moss should know just ease up allittle and say to himself that if i do catch this ball i need to be ready to get the Firstdown i liked to see that we were given respect and no 8 in the box crap. That might be because we didn't have portis in there but even in the begginning we were given room. I just hope it stays that way but we got to throw deep toget that done. |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
On Campbell.......some incompletes and his fumble.........we had an opportunity to win the game until he fumbled

I'm pretty sure he got beat every time the ball was thrown in his direction. We all know how bad Jimoh is, so that wasn't really a surprise. Did it seem like to anyone else that our D line would fall to the ground a lot? The Line itself didn't seem to get any pressure at all without a blitz. I know we were missing I think three starters on the line, but Williams is supposed to excel at taking no names and making them better. I'm anxious as hell for Friday. |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
Our line was never exactly the forte of this defense. They rarely got pressure last year without the blitz.
Harris looked awful. I really think letting Smoot leave kicked our ass. We'll see! |

Harris looked awful. I really think letting Smoot leave kicked our ass. We'll see!
I taped the game and went back to look at why the defense looked so bad. The first thing that I noticed is that the blitzes were not disguised and that when M, Washington blitzed, he didn't push hard. It really looked like they were trying not to get hurt. |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
On Campbell.......some incompletes and his fumble.........we had an opportunity to win the game until he fumbled
One of his incompletes was a fumble, he led a drive with mccombs. a sorry running back who isnt going to make the team. The first fumble was hard to tell whose fault it was, the second was a fumble by the RB in the endzone. I thought Campbell looked very good. |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
As go the Dirtbags, so will go our season. And they looked GREAT last night!
As long as none of them get hurt (knock on wood) and Buges keeps them sharp our offense will be fine. |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
Firtst of all, it's only the first preseason game. So neither the defense or the offense is going to show much by way of schemes or designs, not yet. GW will have these guys ready by the begginning of the season. I don't know if there's any team that could have three D-line starters out and and a starting corner and not feel it.
I was really impressed with Nemo and Brunell. Even if Brunell was going against the second team or whatever, he had plenty of zip on the ball and was more acurate than he ever was in '04. The O-line look really good and will get nothing but better as we go along. I think the addition of Nemo and Portis in the new scheme will take a lot of pressure of Ramsey. Go skins!!! |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
I thought Ramsey looked ok, not great, just ok. There seemed to be a lot of 4 yard passes on 3rd and 5 situations. Not really sure whose fault that was, but it was frustrating. But it's still early. The "plan all along"-as Gibbs would say-is for Ramsey to be the starter opening day. I'd like it if he put together a dominating performance next week and definitively wins that starting job, as opposed to not losing it.
Even if you don't like Brunell, I would think that as Redskins fans we should all be pretty happy with how he did yesterday. He made good decisions, sharp throws. All around I was happy with his performance. Yeah I know it was against backups, but wasn't he playing alongside backups on offense as well? As for Campbell, based on what some people here have said about him I was just amazed that he knew to line up behind the center. Seriously though, for his first time out there I thought he did pretty well. I actually feel a little bit better about our overall QB situation after Saturday's game. It was painful to hear Darrell Green keep referring to Bill Musgrave and "Hargrave" and his comparison of Brunell to Favre was odd. For those of you that didn't catch it, he said that Brunell had started his career as a backup to Favre. And then he talked about how Favre had decided to rededicate himself this offseason and how he had faced so much adversity recently-father's death, wife's lung cancer, brother-in-law's freak fatal accident. And then he said that people don't realize that Brunell has also faced a lot of adversity recently. So here I'm thinking "wow, what could this be? Something going on in Brunell's personal life?". But then DG says Brunell got frustrated with the whole situation in Jacksonville toward the end of his time there and had to deal with fans frustrated with him last year-his first in Washington. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but fans heckling you is nowhere near the adversity that Favre has been dealing with. Is it? |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
we were missing our good D line guys too...
campbell had two fumbles and int while he was playing, but neither were his fault. His stats look bad, but his play (vs scrubs) really didn't. |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
I didnt get to see the game, it wasnt televised here. But from what I was hearing from people the playcalling was stil pretty bad. Or atleast Ramseys execution of it. On third and long he was still throwing the ball to a hb for a short, if any gain. And not attempting to look down field first and try to actually get the first down. Yes I know you dont open up your bag of tricks in preseason, but getting a first down isnt really a big secret in football. Im pretty sure your playbook would still be safe if you threw the ball past the sticks...

Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
Ramsey looked terrible. I can understand why Joe Gibbs drafted Jason Campbell. Ramsey is not an NFL calibur QB to be honest. For peaks sake how many years is it gonna take you to make an accurate throw. comfortable with receivers is no excuse for professionals. Basically he looked awkward and lost. He is gonna get pulled early on if we lose to chicago and dallas.

awkward and lost might be yours and peak's take on it, but the only thing we can agree on is that he was fidgety. I'm gonna take a chance here and say that he was fidgety for a whole other reason. He was giddy as a school girl. He kept seeing ways to exploit the guys left and right, seeing recievers prancing through the secondary in slowmotion wearing tu tus calling seductively for the ball. Defenders donning concrete shoes, angry and befuddled. All the while he's got gibbs in his ear... "dont tilt your hand". So he lofts a pillow into the air to the man in the cement loafers. This has kinda gotten lost in all this "Ramsey looks more confident" talk: this is the beginning of the biggest season of Ramsey's life--eveyone, himself included, has said that he has to step up--and so it's not a surprise that he might be the most fidgety guy out there. My guess (and hope) is that he'll shake off the first-night jitters, get comfortable behind the gelling O-line, and have a great year. JoeTheisman--maybe, but maybe not. We'll see. I remember how Mark Rypien looked early on in his skins career. But later, he went to Disneyworld. |

Here's a little clip from Comcastsportsnet of Patten after the game. Seems to me he has it about right--including his fianl comment about making throws in the NFL:

To be fair, he got trashed because he played like trash last year and had a lot to do with throwing a promising season away. I'm glad he's getting his bearings back, but he was playing against second stringers as a backup himself for the first time in over a decade. I hope he can make a great backup that brings veteran leadership to a squad of young QBs, but think about it. He didn't go in and score 4 TDs. He didnt even score one. He just completed some passes, and everybody's talking about how great he did. He definately showed improvement, but thats really not saying all that much. |

It was painful to hear Darrell Green keep referring to Bill Musgrave and "Hargrave" ...
It was embarrassing. He was trying to be too much of a broadcaster, something he obviously is not. He just needs to be himself. Maybe pull out a tootsie roll during sideline interviews or something. |

I think what has raised some people's eyebrows is the accuracy and zip he showed that he so desperately lacked last season. |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
dagnamit. lets not bad mouth someone because they did good, He played better against the second stringers then Ramsey did against the second stringers, but i don't care who he played, he played good, that is what you look at in preseason, he like matt said had zip on the ball, it was accurate, and to most people, it looked good. I believe we scored all of our points with brunnel as QB
I am not saying by ANY means that he deserves to start, all i am saying is give the man respect, yes he did suck last year but he obviously didn't want to suck, he also didn't make the decision whether or not he played, and when he was told to play he played. Can't blaim a person for sucking, we can want to cut the guy, or trade them but to actually be upset when he does good is streching it. Now i know i am being hypocritical because i have yelled out Brunnel sucks and what not but over the past few weeks with the ariticles about his kids and how he wants to prove everyone that he really isn't the player that we saw last year I am easing up on this guy. Everyone is ready to cut the poor bastard next year, and i believe he still has trade value.:food-smil |
Re: OFFICIAL 1st preseason thread!
I was just suprised to hear any positives about Brunell even if he hadn't played at all. I'm well aware of the fact he may have been playing against second and third teamers, his play did warrant mention even from some of the former trash mongers. From researching the post I see some complete reversals.

I wouldn't really call it reversals, people hate trash, and last year he was total trash (for whatever reason). on saturday he looked like a real nfl QB, even if it was just for a couple drives. |
