John Madden's Legacy
 

I thought of putting this in the Madden forum, but I figured more people would see it here. So I've been wondering about this the last couple of days and I thought I'd ask you all.

When all is said and done what do you think he will be most remembered for? Coaching, Broadcasting, Madden NFL

On a side note: Joe Gibbs began his coaching career in 1964 at San Diego State as an assistant to assistant coach John Madden

I went with broadcasting, not many play video games and not many know that he was a coach, but just about anyone who whatches football games sees him commataing. Also, his "maddenisms" is why I think he will be remebered. How he has a knack to talk aobut everything else except the game going on...

i went video games. his legacy as seen by the new generation will be the monumental video game that sells millions and millions of copies. he will be remembered by broadcasting but we see that even in madden with his comments in the game.

it's probably a cross between the games and broadcasting...however, more people have seen him on his football broadcasts than play his video games. He was an innovator on both fronts, and as annoying as I find him, it is his broadcasting that will carry him with the older crowd, but his video games that will carry him with the youngin's

Video games. I personally hate him as the broadcaster, I cant stand him. He won a Superbowl, but whenever someone says Madden I Will think of Madden video games........

I think you could easily make a case for any of the three, but I would rank them

1) broadcasting: it's where he's really become a household name
2) coaching: one of the greats
3) video games: the greatest football video game series of all-time, does this bastard do no wrong? LOL

I had to go video games first. Despite his broadcasting excellence, and winning a Super Bowl ring with the Raiders (and being the fastest coach to 100 victories), no one ever [URL=http://www.maddenholiday.com]tried to create a holiday for him[/URL]. That's lasting impact. Every year, he's the tent pole around which the video game industry hangs.

I went with broadcasting. The videogame wouldn't even exist if not for his unique broadcasting. The various Maddenisms in the game are a direct result of the quirky things he says in the booth. And come on, has anyone on earth made the telestrator more famous?
I'll concede that the videogame is a close second though.......which is a shame when you consider his coaching accomplishments.

Broadcasting - everybody knows Madden from broadcasting. Lots play his video game, and many remember his coaching, but broadcasting raised him to the next plateau (from where he could enjoy lending his name to the video game).

I voted Broadcasting but if he continues his decline that he's been going through I'd switch my vote to his video game franchise. I know he was a great coach, I believe he has the highest winning % all time(sorry if someone else mentions that), but I don't believe the coaching part of his career has affected as much in our society as his role on Sunday and Monday broadcasts or the huge impact the madden series has had on millions and millions of people across the world and the amount of their lives they've poured into the games throughout the years.

the game... he was the first to go out and get a game going back in the 80s (computers cost $2k+ for green screens and no hard drives) and its still running, it worked on sega, playstation, ps2, xbox, pc etc etc... it really is the original monster of sports and franchise gaming.

he's well known for the broadcasting too, but thats not as revolutionary as his contributions to gaming history.

the only thing is when i hear madden, i don't even think about Madden himself, i think about the game,
The demand for his game is rediculous. we have a forum devoted to his game, people(including me) stood in line at midnight to pick up his game and play it for the first time, and us poor bastards buy the game every single year

Aikman, Marino, Elway, et al all had games before they retired...however, Madden never played. If it weren't for broadcasting, he wouldn't have had a game based on his coaching legacy.

it doesn't matter what lead to the other ;) he's a decent (though well liked) broadcaster, but the game that caries his name is a much bigger part of gaming culture than he is to football culture. (if you take out madden NFL andd his insistance to make the game as lifelike as possible, there's no guarantees that football games would be nearly as good now... if he doesn't broadcast, someone else takes his place and that's that)

it is amazing he's been broadcasting since 1980 though.

In about 20 years there will be more people who know the game Madden then the announcer, or the coach madden. Gaming is huge, it accounts for more revenue then the movie industry. Sony makes more money on video games then the rest of their products combined. Madden is a hall of fame coach, an admired broadcaster, but he is absolute bonified video game icon. His name resonates like a fender stratacaster played by Jimi, it is pure legend in the video game industry. His label is a juggernaut in the software industry ranking up there with windows in terms of loyalty. Madden's legacy will be his game, like George Foreman's will be his grill's.

Madden as a game will eventually be gaming footnote. next year it will be Madden/ESPN football, and eventually after Madden starts to drool on camera, just ESPN (damn you EA for 2K).

sadly, i think Madden's legacy is with broadcasting, and reinforcing for years the stigma of football as a clumsy, low-brow, mindless sport it isn't.

As long as madden has been around, I have to go with the game. It is sad when you think about what the man accomplished with the raiders; how his team had to overcome the total lack of comprehensoin when it came to what he was trying to say. The utter reduncancy of statement after statement like, "What they're trying to do is get that ball into the endzone.... that way they can get some points... and the team with the most points, usually comes out the winner..."

I wonder if a butterfly landed on his head one day to inspire that team to its victories.
