Postgame thoughts

Here are some of my quick postgame thoughts:

-Ok the points weren't there, but we did move the ball well. Overall I think the offense looked promising.

-Cooley had some nice catches, but needed to take his route a little deeper on that one where he got stopped at the 1.

-Moss is a playmaker, anybody miss Coles now? Who by the way has looked bad against the Chiefs dropping a few.

-What else can you say about the offensive line? They did a great job in pass protection and consistently opened holes in the running game.

-Outside of the overthrow on the INT by Ramsey, I thought he was playing pretty decent. Brunell also played well, I don't understand why people are bitching already on Brunell. Ramsey should remain the starter as long as he's healthy.

-Nothing has changed defensively, they're still rock solid against the run and fly to the ball. I would have liked to have seen more pressure and hits on Orton, but you've gotta give the Bears some credit here, they have a pretty good offensive line.

-Overall I think a lot of us, myself included, really underestimated the Bears. Orton does play with a lot of poise for a rook, they have a very good defense and a quality running game (even though we took that away pretty well). If Brown doesn't cough up the return and give the Bears that short field I think we're looking at a 9-0 win.

-A win is a win. The offense didn't put up the points we would have liked to have seen, but they did move the ball well and that's something we should really be excited about. Things are still coming together but we're miles ahead of where we were last year. The points will come.

Brunell blows

i remember seeing some quote from gibbs that said we were gonna see a whole new team week 2 against dallas

and we're 1-0

Brunell was 8/14 for 70 yards...

I'm not really sure why you're hating on him.

I was "watching" from NFL.com being an out of state Redskin fan.......

but why oh why did Gibbs with a little over 2 minutes to go and Redskins driving hand Betts the ball for 3 consecutive times with little gain and then punted. And after the interception were down at the Bears 17 and Brunell took a kneel......why not give Hall a FG try at least....??????

brunell did throw an int but it got called back on a questionable interference call and i have never liked him and hes taking away ramseys time

what if it got blocked and returned....a win is a win

I think this was a slug fest between two excellent defenses. Ultimately, our team just played better, although it would have been nice to see them get one in the endzone.

Boy, Antonio Brown isn't really doing himself any favors - last week he had about five drops in the preseason finale and this week he fumbles away a kickoff return.

If there is one thing Gibbs doesn't tolerate it is turnovers. I'd be worried if I were Brown. Maybe they should try to work Taylor Jacobs in on punt returns.

Last year Brown cost us the Dallas game with 1:34 left with his fumble....
he continues to fumble and I'm losing my patience.......Gibbs should too.........

Because this is the NFL not Madden. Why kick a FG... just to rub it in?

As for running the ball with 2 min left, you do that to make the Bears burn their timeouts.

Even though Ramsey was cleared to play he took a nasty shot and was probably banged up pretty good.

I don't have a problem with Brunell finishing the game.

That's why you have two quality QBs.

But the bears had plenty of time to go down the field and kick a field goal to win 10 to 9.................... So Id rather see us make plays and continue to get first downs to burn the clock............

As for the fieldgoal........hey dont forget about the gamblers in Vegas

That was a great game from the D. Orton looks pretty poised and we made many mistakes. If not for the D we easily could have lost. Great job by Brunell. He played smart and we seem to have recievers that are sort of feared. Go skins!

I think D looked great - they gave up 166 total and 41 yards russhing. Nice eh? :)

Line looked great: 4+ a carry on 40 carrys

QBs looked competent, not great. Although I had a gut feel PR would have scored a TD, who knows

Coverage Teams looked much much better; cannot afford turn overs on ST.

Props to Ade Jimoe for the best hit of the day on Muhammed making him drop a ball.

Portis put 18 lbs on and he is a horse

Moss is Legit

Have a bad feeling this game was like the Tampa opener last year....I will be nervous as hell monday before the game. Bottom line however, is a win is a win so I am happy til monday :)

HHhhmmmm, you can take a knee and not have to give the ball back to the Bears, or you could kick a field goal, give the ball back to the Bears and risk the Bears running it all the way back for a TD. Seemed like the right call to me.

We are going to be horrible this year. Brunell, Ramsey, or Campbell.....doesn't matter. I have been a fan for a long time and have no confidence in our offense. We made the Bears look like the best defense in the league. Everyone act blind and make excuses....because we do that best! I accept reality and look for a worse season than last year. We had everything in our favor in this game and still only won by 2 points. HORRIBLE. We are going to get pounded by KC, Denver, Philly....must I go on. Anyway....all these positive posts make me want to ask if anyone watched the game??'

theres ssome hate to brunell (i think) because he throws shorter passes and (even in preseason) iss less willing to go deep.

He doesn't make mistakes, but he makes less big plays too. Either way, he was fine, but I would have liked at least 1 TD. Moss 4 for 96, 24ypc avg, that' not a bad start. patten was a bit quiet, hopefully we'll see him and jacobs go for gold on monday.

ST on offense ;) would've been nice to see him catch one, but if you guys wanted a big receiver, he's 232 f**king pounds.

I think Gibbs felt a low scoring game was enough to beat the Bears, but no matter how bad the Cowboys might look today, we are going to need to take some shots down field.

Just think, the game really should have been 9-0!

You are right that we looked bad on offense. BUT.........
We actually ran the ball well and had a good chance to score a couple of TDs.

The game was not as close as the score made it seem. We dominated the entire game. The bears offense could only score off of a terrible KO fumble. Those turnovers have to stop.

Our running game looked good against a good run defense. The problem is simply that we have one QB that seems to have no feel for the pass rush and another one that is scared to attack a defense. If we can put Ramsey on the move more or convince Brunnel that he should push harder for the TD then we may be alright.

Regardless, it should be obvious that our defense will allow us to be in games all the way until the 4th quarter and our running game should really wear out opposing defenses.

We may have another season of not scoring much, but I think we can still win more than 6 games.

Are you wanting to live in the past or the now....last year is last year. And we don't play Minnesota this year....did you see what Tampa did to them?? I hate this sh**. You guys prove me wrong somewhere down the road and we'll talk. We CAN"T SCORE POINTS. And this is no different than last year. Did you also see what KC did to the Jets offense.......oh yeah.....shut them out. If there is any way to make negative points, we would be able to do it.

Post game thought...any joy from the victory was tampered by Gibb's post game were basically Brunnell is going to be our QB. Get ready for a loss in Big D...Brunnell is NOT a NFL caliber QB anymore, a servicable back-up maybe, but not a starter. I don't recall him hitting a single reciever in stride, like Ramsey did with Santa Moss, nor does he seem to look off the DB's, hell Orton looked more poised and even pumped faked, Brunnell locks-on his receivers like a rookie. It is going to be a long year again.

Gibbs just cannot except the fact that he made a mistake with Brunnell. His postgame all emphasized was that Brunnell does not make mistakes, which is fine and good, but in the modern NFL you have to stretch the field and take chances with down the field throws...as soon as Brunnell stepped out on the field I felt like I was in the movie Ground Hog day, except this time it was watching last years offense all over again. I hope I am wrong...I really do, but my gut instinct says otherwise.

Gee, I'm listening to the post game conference right now, and I'm not sure where you got that Gibbs is starting Brunell for the season. When asked about Patrick Ramsey or Mark Brunell starting, Gibbs replies, "I don't know, we'll have to look at it after everybody is healed up and see."

Sounds to me like we're waiting to see how injuried Ramsey really is.

I was listening to the radio, AM 980. Also Joe Jacoby, who I think knows Joe Gibbs a lot better than you or I made this inference from what Gibbs said. Trust me though I would be more than happy to be wrong...if I am wrong I will jump for joy...feel free to say I told you so.

I just do not want to see Brunell starting, and as I said before I will be extremely happy if I end up being wrong.

While its nice to start off the year with a win, I just get the feeling that unless our Def holds opponents under 10-12 pts each game, we are in trouble.

Our offense may give up more points to the other team than our def.

Re: Postgame thoughts

In all fairness to Brunell, that INT that was called back (due to defensive interference) was not all on him. It appeared that the INT was made possible by the pass interference. Moss had his jersey pulled down over his shoulder pads - resulting in Moss not being where Brunell likely expected him to be. Brunell didn't make many mistakes, but he didn't look too much different from Brunell of 2004; he threw a lot of short hitches and just a few deep balls. Ramsey looked like he has throughout his career - he throws a pick and then looks pretty good.

I hope Gibbs decides to keep Ramsey in because he gives our offense a spark (and a few INTs). Brunell doesn't make as many poor throws as Ramsey, but he doesn't throw as many good balls as Ramsey either.

Portis looks like a stud (even if you take away that awesome 41-yarder).

The defense looks damn good, but where was the pass-rush the first three quarters?

The offensive line looks very solid and it will only improve with time (as Jansen's hand heals and the unit gels).

The game-planning looked light years ahead of where it did in week one of 2004 (although not as good as it did in week 17 of 2004).

I can wait, the cowboys will kick our ass once again, this game shouldnt have been close, and gibbs playcalling at the end sucked, once again giving a team time to go down field only needing a fg to win,if def doesnt get the turnover, bears probably get the fg,if Cedric benson starts the game, bears would have won it,if bledsoe gets the kind of time Orton had hes going to pick us apart, dallas has just tied sd at 21 all,on the road, they can score,we cant ,we always have at least 1 big turnover a game to give the other team easy points, mnf in dallas, crowd pumped as hell,it probably wont be close

Re: Postgame thoughts

Wow, the kneejerk overreactions are comical.

We put up 323 yards of offense today, the points weren't there but we had 1 TD called back and another that should have been a score if Cooley took his route about 1 foot further into the endzone.

We took some shots down the field, drawing a big PI call and Moss broke lose for a nice 52-yard gain.

We ran all over a very tough run defense, Portis and Betts combined for 33 carries for 162 yards, that's a nice 4.9 per rush average. Again, this was against a pretty stingy Chicago run D. We killed them in TOP with 34:15 to 25:45.

We did give up 3 sacks, but overall the pass protection was very good, and the run blocking was stellar.

On 3rd downs we were 6/16 for 38%, you'd like to see that a little higher but it's still not a bad day. Counting in the 1/1 on 4th downs that's an overall conversion rate of 41% on 3rd and 4th downs.

It wasn't a pretty win, but I think we were sadly mistaken if we thought the Bears were just going to roll over on us. They have a very good D and running game. They might not pile up the wins this year but I think they're going to give alot of teams fits.

When you look at the scoreboard and only see 9 points things don't look so good. But if you take a deeper look at the numbers, the offense was moving the ball but wasn't able to capitalize, simple as that.

Re: Postgame thoughts

For the guy that mentioned Denver kicking our butt. I watched the Dolphins game and if they had a proven RB in (i.e. Ricky Williams) the scoreline would have looked even worse. Denver suck big style on both sides of the ball. Plummer had NO time in the pocket, Lelie couldn't get open and they lost their starting RB and CB for the game early and their other starting CB for a good portion of it.

We can beat Denver with good D and mistake free O. Like we apparently played today.

Dallas? SD can't stop the run or pass, but are outscoring the Pokes because their D can't stop the Chargers either. Our D can stop Dallas, and if our O runs the ball all over them, then we can out score them too.
