NFL Trade Deadline Next Week

The deadline to make a trade is set for next week. I do not mean to spark any talk about crazy trade proposals (i.e. Ramsey and Arrington for a 1st and 3rd round draft pick), but the topic is thread-worthy.

The only possible trade that I think might warrant some consideration is a trade for Chargers guard Toniu Fonoti. The NFL Network has reported that Fonoti is on the market. Fonoti is perhaps the league's best young guard and the word on the street is that he could be obtained at a bargain price (mid-round draft pick). However, he is coming off an injury, is in the last year of his rookie contract, and will command a ton of dollars.

Although Derrick Dockery has potential, I have yet to see him develop into a very good offensive giard. I can come up with a lot of reasons why he should not be replaced, but Fonoti is an interesting player. What do you think?

Re: NFL Trade Deadline Next Week

In my humble opinion, I think if we decided to pick up an extra offensive lineman or two, it would be for depth reasons. I think Dockery is playing relatively well enough and tying up alot of money into another guard is just not what the Redskins need to do....but certainly stranger things could happen. If we had to pick up anybody in midseason, I believe we'd need to concentrate on the defensive line. We need more pass rushing linemen to get more pressure on the QB and to allow GW to take pressure off the secondary that is already thin as it is.

Re: NFL Trade Deadline Next Week

i think we stick with dockery. dockery has been with this o-line for what, 3 years? he's comfortable with his place, and they are comfortable with him. trading for fonoti wouldn't make the rest of the o-line comfortable, so i say we stick with dockery. besides, he hasn't been that bad this season, our o-line has been performing great recently, except for the dallas game.

Re: NFL Trade Deadline Next Week

I actually think that Dockery is good enough to keep his job. But, for anyone who has followed Fonoti's career, he is a very interesting player; the guy is a absolutely dominant guard.

I don't see any reason NOT to sign him for depth if he comes at a reasonable price.

Re: NFL Trade Deadline Next Week

he's not on the free agent market though, we'd have to trade for him. i'm not willing to give up something for him, i'm comfortable with our o-line depth.

Yeah...at a reasonable price, but if RF is right, that probably wouldn't happen.

mid season trades rarely happen, wouldnt put too much thought into trades this time of year

This isn't the NBA or MLB...plug-and-play doesn't fly in the NFL. Only desperate teams (i.e. the Saints) or ones with players to spare make trades at this point in the game and I don't see us having players to spare.

even if we get someone, they'd have to learn the gameplan and figure out their teammates. I don't think a good DE is up for trade, and if we could get one, it could easily be 6 weeks before they hit the field.

You guys do realize the cap hit involved with moving Arrington right now would make it impossible.

And if Brunnel got hurt we would want to rest the entire load on the rookie. Not going to happen. As far as Arrington the cap hit makes it impossible for them to move him. I believe Arrington will be a starter and contributor by November.

Re: NFL Trade Deadline Next Week

I think one of the strongest areas on our team is the line. Dockery is playing as well as he has since drafted, and this is only his 3rd season. Thomas is playing well also, and he is in his prime as offensive lineman go. I dont think we need to bring him here, he may be one of those distraction things if he doesn't get playing time, being as good as it is said he is. I think we have the makings of a hell of an O-Line. All are relatively young by lineman standards. Samuels signed a "lifetime" contract(is that possible now a days), Jansens a ROCK, and Raybach is in his first year and plus hes playing in his hometown. What we need is a D-Lineman that can rush the passer. If we can deal somebody(NOT A PICK DANNY!!) for a pass rusher (although I think we have a damn good one on the bench) that would help with the lack of pressure and maybe cause some INTS , fumbles ect.

Yea we need def end help and corner most of all, but i am not entirely sold on dockery, yet. and fonoti is a beast. if we can get him cheap why not. our guard depth and all beyond the 41 year old is suspect. and we've been talking about our inability to run block when we need to ie.. for 1st downs and goal line.he would really help in this. about 6"2 349pds.. let's move the pile.but i agree corner and d end are most important.

I do agree with the guy being a beast. but if I had a choice I would take a DE, maybe a corner for some depth since the injury bug seems to be hitting our DBs.
I didn't know he was that big, boy him and Dockery at the guards spots would be pretty nice, although Thomas isn't my any means a small guy.

use him as a blocking TE in goal line...

We had two big weakness' at MLB and a SS this last Sunday.
On a couple of those long runs against the Broncos Matt Bowen and Lemar Marshall missed on some routine tackles. I would not be surprised if Pierson Prioleau is not brought back to start at SS soon.

An extra guard would be a luxory we do not need. At these two other positions we need more talent.

I'm pretty much with the masses on this one - Dockery is solid, and will probably get better as the season goes on. I don't remember one holding or ill. motion penalty on him during the pre-season, and nothing really sticks out in my mind thru the first four.

He's really cut down drastically on the mental errors. So were set there.

D-line and secondary depth.

Re: NFL Trade Deadline Next Week

holdman totally whiffed on an easy tackle that allowed the first run. the second run was blocked much better and both marshall and bowen were a bit late to make the play.

Yeah, Bowen's angle was way to direct. He should have given up a ten yard gain and taken a more rounded angle, rather than his aggresive angle which left no room for mistake and he missed the takle and gave up a long TD run. He should have contained rather than trying to take the guys head off.

I areee we need D line help more than any other position on the team right now. Another front line OL coming in at this time would be a luxary we do not need, nor can we afford, nor is there a place for him to fit in at this time.

Maybe another CB could be useful since we're so thin there, but DL is what we've needed for a while (espically one that can rush the passer) though they're so hard to come by at what we would consider a reasonable price.

"The Chargers sent Fonoti to Minnesota for a seventh-round draft pick in 2006, which will be upgraded to a sixth-rounder if Fonoti dresses for six games or starts three games."

Man, I think this kid is worth a 6th rounder. We need O-line depth. Did anyone else's ass pucker when Rabach went down and Cory Raymer came in?

MTK 10-19-2005 10:22 AM

Raymer is a serviceable backup, would I want him starting again? No way.

I have a feeling that Marty in San Diego wanted into the trade market this year after hitting it big with McCardell last year. The QB trade was nothing more than going for the draft pick - Feeley won't be on their roster next year even if Rivers (or Brees) gets traded. Basically, the Chargers picked up two 6th round picks.

drew54 10-19-2005 10:39 AM

Re: NFL Trade Deadline Next Week

Isn't the reason you have backups, is in case of injury, meaning if Raybach's ankle would have been broken Raymer would be our new starter.

I would have sent them a 6th rounder for him. We don't even have our 6th rounder from last year on the team anymore.

the only trade I would like to have seen would of been Ramsey to the Cardinals for one of there corners (Eric green), plus a conditional pick later if Ramsey did anything with them.

Should be interesting to see what the Chargers do at QB next year. Do they stick with the proven vet in Brees who has proved to be a very good QB for them, or hand things over to the younger Rivers?

diehardskin2982 10-19-2005 11:29 AM

Re: NFL Trade Deadline Next Week

I'd go with the vet, he has the leadership and repore wit the team

dockery has cut way down on the penalties. but he gets nooo push at all on the close in run blocks and 6"6 345 pds that's terrible. randy has the same prob. no push on goalline and short yardage play, he's tooo lite (308 pds). fonoti would have helped in those cituations and for a give away 6th pick to me is a no brainer.I don't know of any good de or cb's available.think falcons would part with dantwe hall? what about smooty possibly getting released?

Re: NFL Trade Deadline Next Week

Decent defensive ends are hard to come by these days. I remember hearing comments by general managers that defensive linemen whether they're tackles or ends are almost as difficult to come across as franchise quarterbacks. Everybody's looking for the next Julius Peppers -- hell, with bozos like Wynn and Daniels, this team would be happy with a third of the pass rushing ability that they have.

Trust me, they're such a hot commodity that NO team would part with them in any trade.
