Interesting Fact

Did you guys know that under Gibbs the Redskins only ever drafted in the first round four times, and traded the pick away for vets the rest of the time?

Drafted Mark May, Darrell Green, Bobby Wilson and Desmond Howard. Only the first to did much for the Skins.

I wonder if Snyder remembers that from when he was younger watching the Skins and has alraeyd been implementing Gibbs old style.

Daseal 04-18-2004 04:11 PM

Good point, Skins. I think Snyder's trading away picks for proven players is actually a good system. I didn't like the Brunell or Portis picks given, but we got two players that we know can play, that's more than you can tell coming out of the draft.

redwagonskins 04-18-2004 04:22 PM

Great point. We make so much of first round picks but if you look at the last several years of first rounders and see how many end up busts, it's nice to get a sure thing in a proven vet.

SKINSnCANES 04-18-2004 04:29 PM

I dont agree so much with giving up first rounders as I do the late rounders. There are plenty of players that are great that came out of later rounds, we just dont take the risk on them. Portis was a second round pick, and the list goes on of great players everyyear that come out of later round. The rookie of the year last year for the last two years have been from the second round. Its all about what system you go in to, what needs the team has, if you get to start as a rookie and who you have around you. Coles was a good pick up for us, we needed a receiver like that, im glad we didnt give our first rounder away this year though.

SKINSnCANES 04-18-2004 04:30 PM

The other problem is somewhere on your roster you need cheap players. Trading a 5th round pick for a player is not going to be anywhere near the salary of a player picked in the fifth round. As all of you know we just have to be better with our money.

Daseal 04-18-2004 04:48 PM

Well, we've been in salary cap hill "next year" for the last what, 5 years? I think Snyder does a better job with the cap than we all know. He tosses around money, but finds ways to make it work with the cap!

SKINSnCANES 04-18-2004 04:58 PM

It always works for the first few years. but yes, we never were in cap hell after all the people we signed in 2000, or 2001, or 2002... I wonder if The Redskins Organization is going to be the next Enron.

offiss 04-18-2004 05:28 PM

Marty had a lot to do with getting us out of a bad cap situation when he was here, he really doesn't get much credit for that.

SKINSnCANES 04-18-2004 06:09 PM

He also cut a bunch of players that no one wanted him to. They wernt necessarily bad cuts, but when say Tre Johnson and Stephen Alexander were cut it made a lot of peopel sad becuase they were well liked.

skinsfanthru&thru 04-19-2004 03:15 AM

the cut marty made that I think I hated the most was the one of larry centers. wasn't brian mitchell one of his cuts 2 or was that the year before cuz that one sucked 2?

SKINSnCANES 04-19-2004 03:24 AM

could have been under Marty, he cut a lot of players that most of us loved. Its not that they were bad cuts, the players were either old or injured in almost all of the cases. But they cut a lot of what Gibbs would call 'core redskins'

skinsfanthru&thru 04-19-2004 03:43 AM

but wasn't the excuse for cutting centers something stupid like his workout routine or something like that. none of that pissed me off as much as marty trying to teach Mr. Green how to play cornerback. the only action I ever liked marty for doing was when he claimed deion off of waivers so the raiders couldnt get him for the playoffs. i thought that was funny as hell him getting picked up by the coach who made him want to retire.

Drafted Mark May, Darrell Green, Bobby Wilson and Desmond Howard. Only the first to did much for the Skins.[/QUOTE]

Bobby Beathard and Charlie Casserly made their great reputations by getting GREAT players at the bottom of the draft and undrafted rookies. We got great cheap players to compliment the stars. Joe Jacoby, Darryl Grant, Monte Coleman, Neil Olkewiezc ETC.
Today we have a salary cap and a bloated budget. We have to depend on the charity of our players to renegotiate and extend their contracts to survive. Then we get a player like Samuels who does not want to do this. Our draft picks are very important, especially our our success at finding good talent with our lower picks. Problem is Cerrato/Snyder are not very good.

SKINSnCANES 04-19-2004 12:37 PM

You would think that we would have been good when Spurrier was here. When Jimmy Johnson became a coach he had some of the best drafts in history because he was a college coach and knew a lot of the college coachs and could get inside tips on who looked good. Im surprised Spurrier did not speak out more about players that he saw that were good. Granted, he really didnt have to many late round picks, but I still think he could have been more of a contributer.

That's funny!

Carnage 04-19-2004 02:55 PM

Brian Mitchell was cut during the Turner years.

Riggo44 04-19-2004 03:16 PM

If Mitchell isn't signed by someone we should sign him for a day so he can retire a Skin. He was alway's a solid team player for many years with us. I was bummed when we cut him! He was definitley won of mr favorite all time Redskins.

Agreed, but the fact that he went to two division rivals kind of irks me...

but that also shows how much he probably felt he was disrespected by the skins.

SKINSnCANES 04-19-2004 03:54 PM

I wonder if he would even want to come back to DC. He always showed a lot of emotion when he played us, and in pregame interviews always was seemingly trying to get back at us.

skinsfanthru&thru 04-19-2004 03:57 PM

yeah I have an unfortunate feeling that that bridge has been burned. i wonder if he'll even wear the skins jersey when he goes to the HOF.

SKINSnCANES 04-19-2004 03:58 PM

im sure he still will. THe other two teams he played for cut him as well. All his stats are from when he was a Redskin.

BleedBurgundy 04-19-2004 04:01 PM

You guys think he's sure-fire hall of fame?

SKINSnCANES 04-19-2004 04:02 PM

definitly, hes second to only Jerry Rice in total yards. Has receiver, passing and rushing touchdowns. All time return leader. Im sure he'll get in eventually.

BleedBurgundy 04-19-2004 04:06 PM

Damn, knew he had stats, didn't realize it was to that extent. And to think, I took the little guy for granted all those years...

SKINSnCANES 04-19-2004 04:08 PM

hes been doing it for a long time. If Jerry Rice would ever freaking retire mabye he could catch him. But Jerry is here atleast for this season, and Brian is getting a little old to bring his A game and try to catch him this late in his career.

BleedBurgundy 04-19-2004 04:09 PM

Who's he playing for?

BleedBurgundy 04-19-2004 04:09 PM

Not the cowboys? Right?

SKINSnCANES 04-19-2004 04:12 PM

I dont think anyone has signed him. he was cut form the Giants this year and the Eagles prior to that.

Gmanc711 04-19-2004 04:19 PM

I dont think he want's any part of D.C. anymore. Its ashame too, cause I really liked Mitchell when he was with us.

skinsfanthru&thru 04-19-2004 04:21 PM

i liked how he got up in the face of everyone that tackled him. he was definitely one tough lil' bugger.

SKINSnCANES 04-19-2004 04:23 PM

Old thoughts about Mitchell are why I think we should keep Gardner. To use his ability as a former QB in sneak plays. Gardner should have been 3/3 with three tds last year but one got called back. Joe was always the master at trick plays.
