Hi-def
I watched the game at home last night on ESPN and that High definition stuff gave me a head ache...granted I watched on a regular TV but the pitchure looked like stillframes peiced together. Although the picture looked sharp between plays when no one was moving, the actual play just made me dizzy. Is applied to all games at some point? Am I gonna have to buy a Hi-Def TV in order to watch without getting a head ache? What do you guys think?

Re: Hi-def
Get a HDTV
|
Re: Hi-def
Humm, I'm not sure you can watch Hi-Def channels on regular TV. In my case all the hi-def channels have non hi-def compliment channels. ESPN has the hi-def channel which looks awesome and the non hi-def looks decent but it isn’t crisp. I would be surprised if you were able to tune into the hi-def channel on a regular TV.
|
Re: Hi-def
Hmmmm..... you were watching the HD channel on a non-HDTV. And it really didn't look right??
Do you have the same problem with your color contrast when you are watching on your Black & White TV? Hmmm.... don't worry, we'll get to the bottom of this! |
Re: Hi-def
you cant watch a HD channel on STD TV. the resolution would be 4 times larger than what your tv can handle.

Re: Hi-def
I saw the Skins-Bengals preseason game in high def and it was incredible, a near religious experience!

I saw the "Best of Jenna Jamison" in HD and it actually was a religious experience! |
Re: Hi-def
I could see the Best of Jenna Jameson as interpreted by (SOMEONE THAT DRAW PICTURES) and still have a religious experience.
EDIT: :) (Not re-enacting, but drawing, hence art, but bad taste nonetheless) |

Second graders reenacting the best of Jenna Jameson? That's kind of disturbing dude |

i have sony grand wega 55 inch high def ,and once you go high def......
|
Re: Hi-def
I left for a meeting after I posted that and came back and realized how disturbing a thought it is...

Re: Hi-def
non HD tvs do not resolve HD signals. The HD signal is actually converted to a normal analog signal which cannot appear pixelated or digital in any way except....
If the station from which you receive a broadcast signal has technical difficulties and the signal the tv actually receive is actually corrupted then the converted analog signal will be an analog interpretation of a screwed up digital feed. You should not have noticed any difference in appearance between a normal game feed and the digital feed since your tv cannot even read it. I am thinking your mind and eyes are playing tricks on you. |
Re: Hi-def
I just got Comcast's HD/DVR Tuner, and my 32 inch Sony WEGA is HD-capable (i'm guessing), so I'm able to watch HD programming. It's a bit smaller, but the clarity is huge compared to the regular analog feed.

Re: Hi-def
If you buy and HDTV be sure to get a glass tube one. I work for a media outlet here on Long Island and we have a full department of people that does nothing but study different makes of TV's. So I consulted them before I bought mine and they said hands down an old-fashioned glass tube HDTV produces the best picture and the LCD and plasma are way behind at this point, but they are still in their first generation. I bought a Sony 32in wega for $1,000 and it kicks ass. –Summo

Honestly Though Is Hdtv That Much Better? I Have Direct Tv And Tivo, And A 60" Sony That Has Hdtv, But Im Afraid To Spend The Extra Money Upgrading My Tivo Unit To A Hdtv. But If You Guys Can Tell Me That Its Worth It. Ill Go Get One Right Now.

I agree the old fashioned flat tubes still have the best overall quality, the big downside is they're heavy as tanks. |

Simply put, YES. It's something you really need to see for yourself to believe. |
Re: Hi-def
yeah...ESPN is not an HD channel but it was presenting the game in HD...I watched the games on CBS and FOX both were fine but ESPN was screwed up...i dont think it was my mind playin tricks on me

You can say that again, my tv is over 2ft deep and weighs over 200 pounds. When my basement was filling up with water I almost broke my back humping that thing up the stairs. :laughing- But it doesn't make sense to me to spend all that money buying HD equipment and buy a pencil thin plasma or lcd when the picture quality is crap. |

The big problem with non CRT Tvs is that they cannot truely display the color black. Since black is technically the lack of all light a CRT is able to easily display a true black while LCDs and plasmas have to combine colors to make it. Most blacks wash out which you wouldn't think is much of an issue except that defintion is made by blacks. The nest generation of lcds and plasma will be far greater. |

ESPN SD (standard definition) was not airing the game in HD. They probably had a message in A BIG FONT that said "Presented in HD", but below it in tiny font it probably said "Where Available". Most of the stations do this now (i.e., show the "Presented in HD where available" message), and it's a little misleading. Perhaps they are using a single HD source and downconverting to SD for the standard definition channels. |

Correct. They also suffer from smear. As most of you know the liquid in those TV’s is charged into the colors and shape of the picture it is displaying. Occasionally when you’re watching a sporting event and the camera moves quickly when following the action the charger and liquid can't keep up and the pictures smears. I recently read in an electronics magazine that unfortunately there won't be many more glass HDTV’s produced because no one is buying them anymore. It makes want to go out and buy another one right now just to have it in reserve incase anything happens to mine. |

How about you tell her: "Your astute choice of electronics is a sign of your strength as an independent woman. Now kneel down and give me head. " It might work. J |

I can feel your pain. My 32 inch WEGA weights 180 lbs, and it's not the weight that bothers me, but how awkward the bastard is to carry it. Damn thing is so front heavy. |
Re: Hi-def
I have a 27 inch panasonic tau and it goes about 100 lbs, I agree BD the thing is so damn awkward to carry. It has built in handles on the side that are totally useless because of where they are located. Thank god I'm hiring movers for our upcoming move.

Re: Hi-def
So here's a question then: I could go ahead and get a nice 27-36" HD-TV for a decent price? I'm looking at the WEGA myself.
|
Re: Hi-def
If you have the space for a CRT, then you could get one for pretty cheap (~$1000). If you don't need a high-end name brand, you could go even less than that.

The wega (pronounced V-ega) is the only way to go. You'll be happy for a long time with it. |
Re: Hi-def
If you have a den and can darken the place sufficiently an HD projector is excellent and relatively cheap.

projecting onto a black screen gives you better contrast too... i think sony is doing that now... not to mention a lot of projectors have computer hook ups now, which is always super nice. |
Re: Hi-def
TMC - look at the widescreen WEGAs. It's worth the few bucks more...and get an extended warrenty. I bought mine on sale at Best Buy, and i've had a few minor problems with it, but they come out to the house to work on it, and it's been a blessing. Even if nothing's wrong with it, have a person come out towards the tail end of your warrenty to clean it up and make sure everything's working properly.
|
Re: Hi-def
Thanks for the advice guys. I DO have room for a CRT, I'm just wondering what kind of prices I can get (I DO want a name brand). Because as everyone is saying, HD is a religious type of experience and I want to watch at least a couple Skins games in it this year.
|
Re: Hi-def
Another question though, would you get wide screen? I've heard NO because then if you want to make sure no one is squished you have to have black lines on the sides of your picture.
|
Re: Hi-def
If you are getting HD, get widescreen. SD can be displayed with black bars on the sides or it can be stretched to fit the width. However, if you are getting HD (which is presented in 16:9 ratio), then you should get a screen that displays it properly (i.e., get a widescreen, which will show it in 16:9).

You wont have the squished look or the black bars when watching HD broadcasts and most of your wide screen dvd's will fit nicely unless they are in 1:853 (If I'm remembering the format ratio correctly) then you will have the bars on top and bottom, but it's a small price to pay. |
