2nd half concerns
vote and discuss
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
Turnovers....and of course stupid penalities....if we avoid both, we'll win out.
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
Turnovers. Without them these games would be far more inbalanced.
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
My vote goes for turnovers. We got lucky against Philly that we recovered the two fumbles if not we probably would have lost the game. In our other losses we have had turnover problems and they probably cost us atleast one win. If we keep turning the ball over it is going to cost us a couple more games knocking us out of the playoffs.
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
The defensive breakdowns were prevalent in our three losses. Though no one likes turnovers, we gave up huge plays that lost the Denver and KC games, and we never got hold of the Giants in the Meadowlands.
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
The turnover situation can be easly fixed, it is a mental problem, a lack of consentration. On the other hand the redskins D especially the D-line has been exposed, and if the problem is not rectified, then teams will continue to exploit the run D for big gains, forcing our O to play catch up, which we have had to do for most of the season.

Re: 2nd half concerns
Turnovers
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
Turnovers-keeping our O on the field is our Best D
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
Turnovers, thank God we got some lucky bounces last game.
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
1. Antonio Pierce and the Giants - when we play them, we need to adjust the entire o and d system because of Pierce's extensive knowledge of the redskins.
2. Big plays given up on D. 3. Need the oline to be more physical in the running game. 4. Need another receiver to step up (other than moss or an h-back) |
Re: 2nd half concerns
Running game. We need to be able to convert those 3rd and shorts without dropping back to pass. I would love to see Portis getting 25 - 30 touches a game, and averaging at least 100 yds. It would help out the passing game, and keep the defense rested.
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
Turnovers is the biggest concern, but in a close second i would say big plays given up by our defense.
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
Other - injuries.
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
I think its the tuff division. All the problems with the D-line, turnovers, O-line whatever, were 5-3 with those problems. In most years we'd be on track to win the division or be looking real good for playoffs. Because NFC East is so strong we could go either way very easily.
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
If this team does not figure out how to run the ball effectively teams will figure out to to shut down moss and then the only scoring threat the team has will be gone.
|
Re: 2nd half concerns
Skins have a killer schedule. You would think the Skins were 11-5 last year.
@Tampa Bay Dangerous team Raiders Can score a ton of poins Chargers L.T. @Rams Bulger, Holt and Bruce will probably be healthy. @Cardinals They better beat the Cards! Cowboys The girls always give the Skins problems. Giants Revenge is Sweet! @Eagles Who made this schedule? Three division opponents in a row. |
Re: 2nd half concerns
Simply if you take the ball away from your opponent they can't make the big plays on offense.

I dunno. Look at the Rams. |
Re: 2nd half concerns
We can only choose one?
I selected defensive breakdowns. Thankfully, they seemed to have fixed the run-stopping problems by giving Westbrook the slap down. Then again, it was Philadelphia. We'll see how they've adjusted this weekend against Cadillac Williams. A close second is lack of a strong running game. So far, Gibbs has not been able to do what he really wants to do -- wear down opponents by running the ball 35 times or more. I would say turnovers, but judging by the way normally sound ball carriers like Thrash and Cooley bobbled the ball the other night, it's obvious these players just aren't as interested in controlling turnovers the way we Warpathers and Joe Gibbs are. Betts had another one, too. For the first time this season though, all of those fumbles just happen to bounce in our favor. Derrick Dockery and Pierson Prioleau were the reason the Redskins defeated the Eagles Sunday night. |

What about them? Just because the Rams can do it -- and it's no certainty that they can judging by their 4-4 record -- doesn't mean we will. Make no mistake, this O-line and Clinton Portis have to get it in gear. Remember, other than the San Fransisco game, the Redskins still aren't exactly lighting up the scoreboard. |
Re: 2nd half concerns
I was close to voting for turnovers but I had to go with a strong running game. Some of the turnovers have resulted in us having to pass more than we should have to and although I really like Portis, it amazes me how he seems incapable of getting off a run of more than 15 yards. I don't know if it's his occasional lack of patience or him sometimes waiting too long and missing the hole, but he just never seems to be able to slip through the linebackers and into the secondary. He's getting way too many 1-3 yard carries where as whenever Betts comes in he seems to be getting 4-6 yards atleast on every carry and is breaking through tackles and carrying people on his back for a little extra each time. The running game gaining some strength would go a long way to helping with ball control and getting the wrs in more one on one situations.

Next week, we get to play the #1 defense in the league and more than likely we'll get our run stuffed again. I truly think though that we have enough weapons that AREN'T Portis that we can contend with anybody. |

portis is getting stuffed constantly while betts is always getting 4-6yards at a time? Then why do they both have the exact same 4.2ypc averages? |

LOL, how's the saying go, perception is reality? |
Re: 2nd half concerns
Turnovers! We would have beat K.C for sure if we could have won the turnover battle. It's really hard to win the close games if you don't.

Re: 2nd half concerns
For me its the division and conference were in. Last season, we would have almost wrapped up a damn playoff spot by now. This season is going to be really tough. I think there could even be a 10-6 team left out. Breaking it down the way I see it in the NFC....
NFC East: Everyone is still in it. Even though Philadelphia is 4-4, they are just as much in it as the 6-2 Giants if you ask me. I think all four teams are going to be comepting for a division crown and one wildcard spot. NFC North: Chicago will get the divison and no wildcard. NFC South: I think both Carolina and Atlanta will be locks for the playoffs. Tampa Bay will fade, but is still very much in it with a 5-3 record. NFC West: Seattle will win the divsion. I think St. Louis can still compete as they are now using Stephen Jackson the way he is meant to be used, so they scare me. This conference is TOUGH AS HELL. Granted we are still one of the better teams if you ask me, but I think we could potentially go 10-6 and miss the playoffs. |
Re: 2nd half concerns
Turnovers, they really cost us the game in KC (especially points scored off of them) and the opening drive in Denver.

portis has a few more 10+ plus runs to counter-act his many 1-3 yard carries while Betts seems to more consistently hit the hole and pick up 4-6 yards. or maybe I'm the only one seeing portis constantly stalling at the line and pretty much falling forward to try and get back to the line of scrimage. in the last game for example he had 3 times the amount of carries for 4 yards or less than he did for 5 yards or more. he does a decent job of breakin a 10-20 yard run maybe once or twice a game, but is not as consistent as the team needs and as his contract would suggest and his injuries aren't helping the matter. |
Re: 2nd half concerns
Betts had 2 carries for 4 yards against Philly, as a team we only averaged 2.7 per rush.
I chalked it up more to Philly doing a solid job against the run than anything our backs did wrong. |
Re: 2nd half concerns
I saw the last game as it was more that the backs couldn't see the open running lanes than it was the iggles defense. I just thought with him coming to town that we would have seen more big plays with the ball in his hands than he's provided. I still think it's too early to deem it a bust of a move, but he hasn't been the back we thought and hoped he'd be so far in his season and a half with the team which has multiple factors. And the present he still isn't leading the offense to a top 5-10 rushing offense like we thought he might.

Re: 2nd half concerns
My biggest concern is the lack of pass rush from the defensive line. I know the Skins are currently ranked #1 against the Pass, however the lack of pressure is giving teams the ability to break a big play.

Not so sure Portis is capable of 25-30 carries a game opn a regular basis mainly because of his fragility. I don't think he can hold up with that many carries. |
Re: 2nd half concerns
i think we have to keep the same mentality as far as the running game.even if you are not having alot of sucess with it,you still have to keep banging away to keep defenses honest.coach gibbs has done an excellent job maintaining time of possesion with the short passing game to cooley and the running backs.our play calling from last year to this year is like night and day,100% improvement
