Re: Who Will Be Our New Offensive Cordinator, Now?

I ran a killer offense back during Madden 2003 with Ramsey as my QB, but in all seriousness I wonder if Fassel would accept a job as an OC?

Mark Brunell :)

Seriously though who knows? Jim Fassel?

Actually, I suspect Zorn will be OC and HC and they'll find some QB coach or offensive assistant

Interestingly enough, there was an article the other day (which I'm kicking myself for not being able to find now) which had a throw away line that said the Redskins are looking for one more young assistant on offense for Zorn's staff.

Mariucci as OC? ... Hey, Zorn has already said he is going to install the West Coast Offense...

Mooch's wife is not letting him and his family leave the West Coast for an OC job. To be honest a lot of us probably haven't heard of the guy who will eventually be named the OC just like a lot us didn't know who Zorn was prior this offseason.

Re: Who Will Be Our New Offensive Cordinator, Now?

Hey wait now... Saunders 2 mil a year... I think if he gets that kind of money, his wife will pack... of course, neither of us know his wife so speculating that area doesn't make much sense...

The key is who is available with West Coast Offense experience??

I can only think of Mooch

Re: Who Will Be Our New Offensive Cordinator, Now?

Maybe, Steve Largent. He could definatly be a wide recievers coach. He was one of the best route runners ever to play.

It's all about the West Coast Offense... according to NFL.com.... Zorn has already said he is going to shake up the team by installing it....

so who's out there, besides Mariucci, with WCO experience? Byner has NONE

Dude seriously, There are tons of coaches out there that have WC experience. Its just that you haven't heard of them yet. Did you know Jim Zorn was a coach before this offseason? Someone will come up, and as much as I would love Mocoh to swallow his pride and become an OC the chances of that happening are moot. Especially since Mooch loves living on the WC.

Well .... this is what I read on NFL.com..

"The offensive system will undergo an overhaul under Zorn, who is expected to install a version of the West Coast offense."

Joe Bugel?

Still think Zorn will have both titles though

Regardless unless Synder covinces Fassel to accept another OC job, I doubt we'll have heard of the guy that gets assigned to the OC role next year.

Not a bad call there SS.. Experienced, former HC.. I wonder though if Zorn will follow the Reid model and hire someone younger from the "tree" like Reid did with Morningweg & Gruden.

Maybe to Fassel. Hell no to Billick. Too much ego on the same side of the ball for a rookie head coach to handle.

Billick: Did I tell you what I use to do for warm ups when I was with the Ravens
Z-Man: BRIAN FOR THE 1,000th time let me run my own practice
Billick: Okkkkk, but it was really good....helped me win a Super Bowl.

No chance.. That'd be a HUGE slap in the face.. You were the favorite for the head job and you'll take a coordinator position under the guy you recommended as your assistant? He's not that desperate to be part of the Redskins family I'm sure!

True. I hadn't thought about that.

Maybe it's Bugel then. I hope they don't go outside the system and pick someone up. But they might pick up someone with WCO knowledge which I don't think Buges has. (He might?)

What's Next

Starting to try to nail down some possible candidates to take over as Offensive Coordinator now that Jim Zorn is the head coach, now that the carpet guy - cool dude, by the way - left and the basement flood is under control.

Talked to some people who know Zorn and they pointed me to Tennessee assistant head coach Sherman Smith. Smith and Zorn are close friends and were teammates in Seattle and Smith is looking to move up the ladder after being with the Titans since 1995. Smith is a former running back and longtime running backs coach and despite his title, he is not the top offensive guy with the Titans (newly hired OC Mike Heimerdinger is) and league sources said they do not believe the Titans would block a move to the OC spot here.

Someone for us to keep an eye on. People tell me Smith is a great dude - I hear the same thing from people who know Zorn - and they have a hunch he could be on Zorn's immediate radar.

I'll see what else I come up with.

Re: Who Will Be Our New Offensive Cordinator, Now?

espn.com is saying Gary Reynolds who went down to Texas A & M with Mike Sherman might be a fit. Apparently he is familiar with the Holmgren style offense

Re: Who Will Be Our New Offensive Cordinator, Now?

Whoever is hired for the OC position will be someone Zorn has worked with before, or someone he's reasonably assured he can work with because the offensive implementation is going to be his, and I'm sure he's going to have some say in the play calling.

I believe they will hire another OC, but Zorn will more than likely call the plays.

Interesting. Mike Sherman is someone I wouldn't have minded as our head coach

Don't know anything about Gary Reynolds

How about Brett Favre retires and comes here? :)

Does it really matter? I expect Zorn to call the plays and be the defacto offensive coordinator.

Sherman Smith

Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs

Former Seattle Seahawks running back Sherman Smith is in his 13th year as the Titans' running backs coach and his second year with the Assistant Head Coach title.

This year, Smith will be counted on to direct a young group of talented runners to become dependable cogs for the offense. Second-year running back LenDale White and rookie Chris Henry will compete for carries this fall and each will be counted upon to carry part of the rushing load for the Titans this season. This will not be the first time the organization has called upon Smith to mold a talented rusher. Eddie George came to the Oilers as a Heisman Trophy winner, started his first game with the team and ended his tenure as the organization’s all-time leading rusher.

Last season Smith’s group of runners helped amass the sixth-highest rushing total in team history and fifth in the NFL for 2006, as the Titans gained 2,214 yards on the ground. The yards per carry for the season (4.72) established a new franchise mark, besting the previous high of 4.61 yards per carry set in 1992. Travis Henry accounted for the majority of the yards with 1,211 and LenDale White added another 244 yards in his rookie campaign.

Between 1996 and 2003, Smith helped Eddie George evolve into one of the all-time great running backs in NFL history and the all-time leading rusher in Titans/Oilers history. In 2003, George became only the 17th running back in NFL history to reach 10,000 career-rushing yards and only the second to reach the mark without missing a game (Jim Brown). His rushing total of 10,009 yards in his first eight NFL seasons ranked seventh on the NFL's all-time list behind Eric Dickerson, Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Jim Brown and Curtis Martin. In his tenure with the team (1995-2006), the Titans rank ninth in the NFL in rushing over that time period and have produced nine 1,000 rushers.

A former standout during his collegiate career at Miami (Ohio) University, Smith coached the running backs at his alma mater for two seasons (1990-91) before moving to Illinois. With the Illini, Smith served as tight ends coach from 1992-93 and added running backs coach to his title in 1994.

After joining the Seahawks as a second-round draft choice in 1976, Smith went on to play nine years in the NFL. Smith led a fledgling Seahawk team in rushing in each of his first four seasons, finishing his Seattle tenure with 3,429 yards and 28 touchdowns on 810 attempts, as well as 210 receptions for 2,445 yards with 10 touchdowns. Smith left Seattle among the all-time rushers in Seahawks history before closing out his NFL playing career with the San Diego Chargers from 1983-84.

As a quarterback at Miami (Ohio), Smith led the Redhawks to the Mid-American Conference crown in his final three seasons while compiling a 33-1-1 record.

In 1985, Smith began teaching in the Northwest where he coached (basketball and track) and taught at Redmond Junior High and coached football at Redmond High School before returning to the college level as a coach in 1990.

A native of Youngstown, Ohio (11/1/54), he and his wife, Sharon, have two grown children: daughter, Shavonne, who is an elementary school teacher in Nashville, and a son, Sherman, who graduated with an engineering degree from Miami (Ohio) and currently works in Rockford, Ill.

Our best bet would be to have Fassel take up the offense, and thats if he would want to do that.

A head coach with the west coast offense, and then you would would ahve another offensive minded coach with a veritcal component to the passing game to compliment the short passing style of the WCO.
