RIP John Madden
A true legend of the game
|
Re: RIP John Madden
Not many people can claim to have the impact of growing the league in the way that he has.
RIP. |
Re: RIP John Madden
Can't tell the story of the NFL without a huge chunk being dedicated to Madden that's for sure.
|
Re: RIP John Madden
Can't even tell the story of Thanksgiving without him. Football genius at every level.
|
Re: RIP John Madden
The NFL owes him a great debt for making he game appealing to everyone and age no matter what their knowledge of the game was.
|
Re: RIP John Madden
He loved RFK, it was one of his favorite venues to broadcast from.
I just remember as a kid his enthusiasm for the game made my enthusiasm for the game grow. Also how he explained the game and strategy in layman terms brought everyone more enjoyment. The classic Madden telestrator…you had to be there to enjoy it. Boom! |

Re: RIP John Madden
Loved him and Summeral.
He was the voice of the NFL as a young fan growing up. Re: RIP John Madden
Madden loved coming to RFK. He always mentioned how much he loved our stadium and how much of a home field advantage it was. You knew it was a big game when he and Summeral did our games - which was quite often.

Don Coryell coaching staff at SD State: John Madden Joe Gibbs Ernie Zampese Al Saunders Marv Levy The Coryell coaching tree from his Aztec era is very impressive as well. Joe Gibbs was a player on Coryell's team at first and won the team's Most Inspirational Player Award in 1963. Gibbs later became a graduate assistant, then assistant coach at San Diego State. He also was an assistant under Coryell with both the Cardinals and Chargers before becoming head coach of the Washington Redskins. Gibbs is a member of the Pro Football Hall Of Fame. Another Pro Football Hall Of Fame coach who coached under Coryell at San Diego State was John Madden. Madden would join the Oakland Raiders in 1967, and then become the youngest head coach of the league the next season at 32 years old. After a very successful stint with the Raiders, Madden became a popular NFL analyst on television and video game mogul. Joe Gibbs' coaching career was almost cut short by Madden. Gibbs was working under Madden, who was the defensive coordinator for Coryell. There was an annual spring football game approaching, and Coryell had Gibbs coach the team that would face Madden's team in the game. Madden approached Gibbs and asked him what plays would be run, so Madden could prepare his team. Gibbs refused to disclose the plays, so Madden asked Coryell to mediate the situation. Coryell told both Gibbs and Madden to treat it as real game, without the disclosure of plays to either side. Gibbs team won that game. As the final gun sounded, both young coaches met at mid-field to shake hands. Madden fired Gibbs right there on the spot instead. Seeing a distraught Gibbs, Coryell then brought him over to the offensive side of the coaching staff. The rest truly is history. Yes .... So much so, that I heavily equate him with the Skins. He endlessly fawned over RFK. One time he said something to the effect that it was a real football stadium not like those other places that were like "shopping malls or sushi bars." He also loved the Hogs. He was always talking about our running game with "he gets behind Big Joe Jacoby and runs people over." RIP Coach Madden. Thank you for everything. |
Re: RIP John Madden
I remember when we'd line up with "heavy jumbo" at the goal line and Madden would go nuts over it. Root em out hogs, lol
He loved some good old sloberknocker football |
Re: RIP John Madden
Love this!!
JOHN (MADDEN) WILL BE MISSED. HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST COACHES I HAD A CHANCE TO WORK UNDER IN MY CAREER WHILE WE WERE AT SAN DIEGO STATE WITH (DON) CORYELL. HE HAS HAD AN IMMENSE IMPACT ON THE SPORT IN SO MANY WAYS. I THINK HIS SUCCESS AS A COACH CAN GET OVERLOOKED AT TIMES BECAUSE OF HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A BROADCASTER AND THE POPULARITY OF THE VIDEO GAME. I DON'T THINK YOU CAN MEASURE HOW MANY FANS HE BROUGHT AND CONTINUES TO BRING TO PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH HIS WIFE VIRGINIA AND THEIR FAMILY. Coach Joe Gibbs |

That is a great photo!

Re: RIP John Madden
Highly recommend the All Madden documentary out now, it's streaming for free on Tubi.
The word legend gets tossed around a little too much, but in his case it's absolutely fitting. It's hard to see anyone else ever having such an impact on the game in the many ways that he did. The league should re-name the Pro Bowl to the All Madden game. And EA needs to cut their bullshit and start putting out a game worthy of his name again. |
Re: RIP John Madden
Just re-create Madden 2003 with better graphics.

[/QUOTE] I'm with you on that, but EA have never listened to the fans and its a cash cow as it stands, so they have no impetus for change. They know all about the criticisms, but while they hold the NFL license, they have the power. If I was Madden I'd have had my naming rights rescinded years ago, but I doubt he was that bothered, especially once he retired. |

People are shelling out those $ for virtually worthless virtual content that gets renewed every 12 months. Too much disposable income? I wait until the spring and it gets reduced (Xbox), and I'll never spend money on Ultimate Team. If I had a decent PC, I'd use custom rosters every year and edit the league settings to replicate the real league as mush as possible, and never buy an other copy. |

Having no real competition is probably the main reason EA gets away with this BS. |
Re: RIP John Madden
Oh they have had competition, it just gets sidelined or buried (maybe even bought). EA are all but too big to fail.
TBF while Madden has many flaws, particularly in Franchise, it's still a fairly good representation of the NFL and very playable for those that don't want something out and out realistic. Unless they come out with a real disaster of a game one year, they just keep on with the same formula. It needs a fan boycott and that isn't likely. |

They are, but EA has the exclusive rights to a "simulation" football game (it's clearly not as we know). So 2K's game will likely be something more arcade like along the lines of NFL Blitz or something. |

Re: RIP John Madden
They don't even have refs on the field anymore, but it's supposed to be a "simulation". Total joke.

Which was like the bomb back in the day, i love those games. |
Re: RIP John Madden
EA Big was pretty cool back in time too.
|
Re: RIP John Madden
Played the heck out of Blitz back in the day, so much fun
I guess the NFL didn't like the over the top hits and tackles though so that's what got it shut down |
