Why Are You More Conservative or Liberal?

I don't even relate to most Republicans in DC either, because they don't do enough for me as a conservative. But its still a 2 party system, so I vote Republican basically every time.

Why I'm conservative:

No. 1 by a mile above anything else: I'm against abortion. Not going to get in arguments about it here, but I am.

2. I want a flat tax or national sales tax.

3. We are a nation of laws. I believe in our sovereignty. People need to come here the right way.

4. I think our money is ours. The more we all keep, the better. Government uses our money terribly.

5. I love the 1st, 2nd, and 10th amendments. Especially the 10th. To me, it's the most important.

6. We have freedom of religion, not from religion.

7. I think our constitution is the 2nd best thing ever wrote by humans, after the bible.

There are more, but those are my big ones, and Republicans are closer to those than Democrats are.

Sorry i havent responded here. I kept meaning to.

My deepest belief about government is laws should be made at the level closest to the people they affect. So nanny state and one size fits all laws that the federal government tries to enforce through the interstate commerce powers should all be banned. Federal government's tasks should be defense of American soil and borders.

Immigration should be by rules but far more relaxed then they are now. If you get here illegally then you should be gone.

Pot should be a local not federal issue and civil marriages shouldnt have gender restrictions.

I am a libertarian with a conservative leaning when it comes to fiscal policy. The best government is the government that maintains a civil peace through fair and balanced applications of laws, allows prosperity through capitalist methods, protects the borders and sea lanes, and keeps their nose out of everything else.

I thought I was going to set a Warpath record for most views of a new thread without getting a response.

I agree with this 100%. Most issues should be state/local issues. The federal government is so far over extended past what it was founded to be.

The older I get, the more I become libertarian on military issues. I want to keep investing in technology, but I don't want our men and women stationed across the world in places they don't want us. We're not the world military police.

I've read some interesting stuff about how we lean politically is more biological than we realize... not really a choice, just who we are. Makes sense.

Re: Why Are You More Conservative or Liberal?

When you think about your core values, you can think about the two or three biggest things that bother to your core, things you just can't get right with.

For me it comes down to:

1) People who don't take accountability for their actions, or who make excuses for why they can't do something, bother me to my core and are not deserving of social services. The republicans are the side more willing to uphold these basic principles: you are worth what your abilities and hard work combine to allow you to garner on the market. Nobody owes you shit. Either earn your way or shut up. This is why, as much as I can't stand Donald Trump, I'd begrudgingly take him over Bernie Sanders if forced to make that choice.

2) People who use their power to take advantage of those not in power, whether through abuse of military social or economic might. I'm very hawkish and do believe that not just the United States, but all peace loving nations with military might should indeed be policing the world in any place where the citizens either can't afford to police themselves, or are oppressed militarily such that doing so is impossible. Of course, while in an ideal world I'd love to overthrow Kim Jong Un and free the people of North Korea, the threat to the United States is significant, and you'd need a hell of a plan to deal with China and Russia, so a level of practical thought has to come into play there.

3) And to that point, people that don't deal in reality, but rather think and act (and vote) based on ideals. Anyone who can't manage to a budget, basically, which Republicans used to be better at, and now everyone is terrible with it.

"How we live is so different from how we ought to live that he who studies that which ought to be done rather than what is done will learn the way to his downfall rather than to his preservation." Machiavelli

From my experience I think a person's wallet is the overriding factor. Most people vote for the party that protects their financial well being. One example, someone on public assistance will never vote for a Republican.

I think the trump fan base at least a good portion of it is a good example of that not being true.
