Phillip Daniels to return to Redskins in '09

Daniels told David Elfin he's coming back next year. Likely to sign the contract next week.

Cool, we now have the 2 oldest starting DE's in the league.

Good move, it helps patch up the line for one more year. Now we can focus on LB or OL with the first pick.

Good stuff. He was smart to shop around and see if there was a better market for him. And there wasn't. Vet min, good leadership, doesn't have to relocate, gets to play with the same guys he's been with for a while, and then he can retire a Redskin. This is a win-win.

Re: Phillip Daniels to return to Redskins in '09

Good shit... '09 will be a special season for the Skins defense and hopefully for the whole franchise. I'm glad a class-act like him will get the opp to be part of it and honestly, save for maybe one or two guys in the draft (who probably won't fall to 13 anyway), a healthy Daniels is about as good as it gets at this point. Just a few years ago he posted 8 sacks in a season... hopefully he avoids injury and leaves everything on the field this season.

Re: Phillip Daniels to return to Redskins in '09

He'll be part of an average rotation. Hopefully both ends will benefit from what Haynesworth brings...so long as he brings it as he is capable of. I'm a bit skeptical about what this defense will do this year. Anything less than a top 3 defense is a failure in my mind with the money put into it.

Dockery, Wynn, Daniels...

It feels like old home week around Redskins Park.

Old home week doesn't refer to age. It means the same as having a homecoming or reunion. Just so everyone's clear. That term may just be a southern thing.

Has anybody heard where big Phil is at in his rehab? I remember an article where he talked about squatting 500 and stuff but that's not really getting to the point... when can we spect him to play @ 100%?

Marcus is probably gonna lay low for awhile and see what's out there. He has expressed a desire to play in a 3-4 to see what that's like. He's been offered a contract and hasn't responded yet. Hopefully he comes back.

That's interesting. Ever since he was cut I thought ILB in a 3-4 would fit him better now... I hope he doesn't end up in NE :spank:

Do you ever say anything positive?...Well about the Redskins I mean, not the Giants' defensive line.

On a separate note, am I the only person who feels somewhat crappy anytime someone mentions 30yrs old (or older) an though it were 90 yrs old? I know the 30s is an age old for football, but it's not like these guys are in walkers and pissing all over themselves.

If the front office would have done a better job with FA (we have more glaring holes than a porn star) then I would say good things. Blowing your load on 3 players is not a good thing. Time will tell, won't it?

This is a solid move, for econo price. I look for Daniels to come back after that big injury last season, and have a solid year.

I'm glad he's a SKIN and choose to sign with the team and finish his career in DC. On a slightly different note than if he would have just hung it up after working/training so hard in the off season last year preparing for the season.

Yeah I'm glad to have Phillip back too. He's a solid guy who worked his ass off last year during the offseason. Besides what he brings to the locker room, I expect him to have a good year.

LOL! That is the funniest thing I've read all day! But yes, I agree as a 31 yr old it is funny to evaluate people the same age as myself and think of them as old or past their prime...

Re: Phillip Daniels to return to Redskins in '09

This is VERY good news.
No rookie could initially do what Daniels does on the end...I sure hope he is back to form...because if he is, he will anchor that end.
Daniels was way underrated by many.
He is a fantastic run stuffer and because of that he can end up supporting the inside as well...that is something Jason Taylor could never do...having Haynesworth should give Daniels the ability to get more sacks...Daniels is more about power so his sacks come from a collapsed pocket or coverage, not due to amazing speed moves.

Daniels is WAY better than Wynn.
I would love for Daniels to play 2 more years...ideally, we should have a rookie DE to be groomed by him...unfortunately, I don't think we have a pick we can use for that.
Like others have said, we need that for OT and LB...thats round 1 and 3.

I am unsure about how valuable bringing M Washington back would be other than "bad draft" insurance.

Daniels is way better than that..he's a legitamate full time starter (if healthy)
Dont underestimate him...especially against the run.

If Marcus comes back healthy, he's way better than anyone we have or a rookie would be starting out. He's every bit as underated as Daniels because of injuries the last couple of years.

Agree...but Blache needs to rotate him early and often to get the kind of performance you speak of. I think Daniels started to wear down late in the '06 and '07 seasons. Anyway, i think Blache and the FO know this, thus Wynn. I see Daniels taking an average of 2 snaps per series.

... btw I don't think we carry all current DEs into the reg season. I bet Buzbee or Jackson are shown the door. Buzbee is a goner if he injures himself again. Jackson I don't see as a good fit for us... not big and strong enough to hold LDE but not explosive enough to hold RDE. I would say Wilson is the safest of the 3 kids.

True dat :) Blache has never been real outspoken in complimenting players yet when Marcus was ever out of the lineup we heard how much he's missed. Personally I feel Fletcher, Rocky and Blades/Marcus make a solid LB corp and we should be able to focus on OL in the draft.

Re: Phillip Daniels to return to Redskins in '09

Daniels is an upgrade to what we already have, but an ideal situation would have been to add someone better. I'd give Daniels 2 years and have him transition into a backup/mentor role next season if he gets beaten out. Not a bad move, but certainly doesn't have me jumping out of my chair.
