WFT Vs Chargers Pre Game Thread

That felt good to type.

So Samuels isn’t practicing in pads yet. This is starting to bother me.

I got the Chargers as a playoff team..will be an uphill battle

My bad…this should be moved over or deleted…pretty sure I was under the correct forum. Sorry for being a dope

Wrong forum lol. I don't like opening up at home, because it seems like we typically lose week 1. But I'm OK with it under Rivera. We really need to start out 2-0.

Definitely a off topic decision, we are more a political group here.

Re: WFT Vs Chargers Pre Game Thread

Given that it's the first game, not the 17th, this game will tell us a lot about a few aspects of our team right upfront:

1) Was the D good because we played scab QB's or were they building to a D that can shut down a top flight QB.
- proviso - Chargers come in with a new HC, OC, Offensive Line, with no preseason warmup. We should shut them down, at least 17pts or under

2) Is Scott Turner able to use the weapons and get off to a fast start in a game, or will we continue the 1st quarter struggles.
- proviso - Chargers Defense was 9th in passing and 18th in rushing last year but they get Derwin James back. Should be a stout defense.

3) Will Fedex give Ron Rivera's team any type of home field advantage.
- note - the WFT was probably the team most helped by COVID's empty stadium policy, because not only did it mean no opposing fans filling it up, the team also took the year to make an almost impossible huge rebuild of the quality and integrity of the FO and expectation of the fanbase. But the team needs to go forward early and not backward.

Because we have Dyami Brown, I'm not too concerned about Samuels. I know both are different type of players but Brown has shown he can play and I'm confident he will help the team if Samuels cannot play.

Interesting article on qb play and EPA stats.

How one NFL advanced statistic is going mainstream

Spoiler alert Fitz comes out looking magical compared to Herbert.

Chargers were top 10 in both offense and defense last year. You never know what to expect with a new coaching staff, but personnel wise I don't see that they lost much; probably got better actually.

They have to travel to the opposite coast, and their starters haven't seen much if any game action yet. For me, the slight edge goes to WFT for being home, but that slight edge is good for a close loss due to two missed field goals.

19-17 Chargers

19-17 Chargers[/QUOTE]Their offense was 18th in points per game, with a 0 game against NE. Their defense was 23rd in points per game.

Saying they were top 10 on both is true in total yardage, but a bit generous in how they actually impacted a game. They were 9th in offense yards and 10th in defense yards.

It should be a good test for where the WFT is at but we should be the better team.

I feel good about this season, we should win the East again, Dak can't play defense for Dallas, Philly's not ready and so far the Giants QB is regressing, if we keep our feet on the gas we should be ok.

I really didn't see the need to sign Samuel in the first place. If you were going to sign him then why Humphries? It was one or the other, no need for both since you already re-signed Sims, then your drafted the kid in the 4th round and you already have McLaurin. wr overload.

Herbert is a gun slinger, they have a good mid level game and take deep shots. While we haven't gotten to see this secondary in real action yet.. a lot of the pieces are still the same as last year and they got burnt plenty of times. When the chargers score in this game it will be off of big shots down field. I mention the second level LB core due to inexperience and lack of speed for the experienced. The dink and dunk and a good short game of screens and delays to engage the pass rush could hurt us. I worry about the back end of the D but I DO have confidence in JDR making in game adjustments.

This will be a good test for our offense too, if we can't score 24 against a very avg defense, it could be a rough go.

Washington signed K Eddy Piniero to the practice squad. In 2019 with Chicago, he made 23 of 28 kicks (3-7 between 40-49; 2-2 50 and beyond)...

Welp Hopkins is officially a concern

Idk remember last year? Humphries is slot and we all know Sims is less than spectacular- so a little depth there? Samuel and Brown = speed and you can never ever have enough speed. Rather have too many options than none like last year. Injuries happen to boot. Our wr corp and our d line are two areas we do not need to worry about at the moment.

There it is. That's the caveat....if we rely on Hopkins, we lose even if he performs well.

He was the first guy we signed, Humphries and Brown were opportunistic moments where they stood to get even better

Re: WFT Vs Chargers Pre Game Thread

Honestly, I'd rather they play it safe with him. He's a weapon, but I'd rather have him at 100% for 15 games, than trot him out there at 80% and risk aggravating the groin injury. If he doesn't play until next week or even week three, I'm good with that. We're pretty deep at WR.

MTK 09-08-2021 01:54 PM

Re: WFT Vs Chargers Pre Game Thread

Just IR him. If he's been dealing with this since May it's not getting better in a week and probably needs long term rest and/or surgery.

Feels good to be deep at WR - next man up. Don't want Samuel coming back until he's 100%.

MTK 09-08-2021 02:14 PM

Re: WFT Vs Chargers Pre Game Thread

The good news is the coaches have probably known for weeks now that having Samuel week 1 was going to be a bonus and something they couldn't plan on. Even just a few days ago they were talking like at best maybe he'd be available for a limited number of plays. So this shouldn't be a major blow to the game plan.
