Redskins Pre-Draft Visits

I've been looking at this pre draft visit list the last few days, and trying to piece together some possible fits.

One thing I saw was we met with both Alabama DTs (Reed and Robinson) at the combine. I wonder if we take one of those guys in Round 1? DT is going to be a big need, especially at nose.

I believe there are two different lists. Your list is of players they met with at the combine, All-star game, etc. Then there is the list of players who visit Redskin park... I would like to see the list of Redskin park visitors.... not sure you can read to much into either list

Re: Redskins Pre-Draft Visits

Dadi Nicolas Va Tech OLB

Player Overview
With 18.5 tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks as a junior in 2014, Nicolas considered leaving school early for the NFL Draft and few would have blamed him. But he decided to return to Blacksburg for his senior season with the goal of emerging as one of the top edge rushing prospects for 2016. His production dipped as a senior with 2.5 sacks, sparking doubt for those already concerned he doesn't have a natural fit in the NFL.

Strengths Weaknesses
STRENGTHS: Nimble athlete who is at his best when he can use his light feet in space. A relentless hustle player, Nicolas has excellent first-step quickness and initial momentum to split double-teams when lined up as a three- or five-technique and shave the corner when rushing off the edge from a wide formation. He is quick-footed to avoid blockers and keeps his eyes on the ball.

Good special teams player with a number of blocked field-goal attempts throughout his career.

WEAKNESSES: Not enough core strength or power to hold up in the trenches. Isn't a strong point of attack player and needs to refine his hand use, relying mostly on his lower body to do most of the work. He is still developing his football awareness, but has grown considerably in this area, holding the edge and leveraging the field vs. the run.

IN OUR VIEW: After a disappointing senior season (2.5 sacks), Nicolas is looking for redemption in pre-draft workouts. Too small to remain at defensive end or even as an edge rusher in a three-man front, Nicolas is a project who perhaps projects best at outside linebacker in a 4-3 alignment

This is more of a question than a comment, but I am a bit confused.......

After reading the McL article where he likes to look guys in the eye to see if they're passionate about football........
does that imply he (or the staff) has interviewed each player they draft?

Here's an article from a year ago, that tracked a lot of the pre-draft visits.

From the list above, I only recognize Scherff & Halliday, but maybe a I missed another 1-2 that we went after. Either way, it's a low percentage.

I'm guessing a lot of the discussions during Senior Bowl or even the combine might not be recorded.

I'm equally sure that many of these visits are "smoke screens" to throw other teams off, but again the "look them in the eye" thing has me a little confused if that counts for every draft pick or just the marquee rounds.

I would appreciate hearing other thoughts on this.

Thanks.

My general thought is most if not all who they meet with, interview, etc go up on their draft board. But I feel there is certainly a strong strong effort to disguise interest, especially by McC and this regime. Certainly with the emergence of social media, this strategy is even more apparent. Even John keim said last year, McC has made it harder than ever to get information from the front office. The leaks have dried up.

I'm sure there is some gamesmanship with other teams to feign interest with some visits and smoke screens, but some are harder to read than others. I like that McC has made it tougher to get information...I think this strategy leads to more success in getting the prospects we want.

I agree with this. It used to matter less because we didn't need to worry about other teams trying to scoop the guys we were targeting, our judgment was so bad. But with McLovin? You know any team would kill to see his assessment.

scooping guys up that don't fit your scheme cause someone else likes them is a good way to lose. if you're deferring your scouting staff/GM's judgement to someone working on another team, it's time to get a new scouting staff/GM.

you want to deny information to force other teams to make less than perfect decisions, which abstractly makes them worse and your team better. maybe they trade up too high to get a guy or drop back a bit too far and miss the guy they wanted because they can't get a correct read on what everyone else is going to do.

Re: Redskins Pre-Draft Visits

True, but not every player or position is so scheme dependent that Intel from a good judge of talent would be valueless. Not suggesting that anyone would want to replicate our draft board. But interest in our assessment (and knowing it in the context of our scheme), you bet.
