Smith expected to join Redskins front office as advisor | ProFootballTalk This guy was the chargers gm that got fired. He was a jerk and was the guy toying with vincent jackson during that whole spectacle. He allowed many of his good players walk because he was cheap and a jerk. He also screwed over tomlinson at the end of his career in SD. |

Bottom line here is the guy knows talent
|
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
I'm with the others. If all he is doing is talent eval, I think that this is a great move.
|
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
scouting consultant sounds like a good role for him. No problem with the move, hopefully he can bring some good talent
|
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
^^ Yup. Say what you will about the way he managed the end of certain players stays in SD (Going back to Brees). He did always manage to assemble a talented team.
I am not worried about Smith's ego, cheapness or general reputation for being a jerk. His ego will be dwarfed by Shanahan, his cheapness will be countervailed by the Dan's check book, and his jerkiness will well handled by Allen's professionalism. This is Shanahan's team and Smith has got to know that coming in. If not, Allen will set him straight quick enough. |
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
There's zero risk in this move. Proven eye for talent who was moved into a position in SD where he didn't fit. Great scout / talent guy, bad at the business side of it and negotiations.
Bruce Allen and Shanahan sit firmly atop the business and negotiation side. Just as Eric Schaeffer is the ultimate salary cap advisor, this guy is a great talent advisor. Makes sense, surround yourself with the best specialists and delegate appropriately to take advantage of their talents and skill sets. |

Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
Yeah...he's a major douche but has some value and zero power here relatively. Love to know what his roll is going to be more specifically within the current process.

Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
I think AJ Smith the talent evaluator is very good at his job. AJ Smith the egomaniac GM is not very good at his job. I'm glad we got evaluator portion of the deal.

Good way of putting it. |
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
I think AJ Smith is a good addition. And although he was definitely a big reason that the Chargers went from the top young roster in the league to talent depleted in the last four years, he was also a large reason why they had so much talent to begin with.
The only thing that makes me nervous is that he becomes the most qualified general manager type in the building the day he walks through the door, which could effect the role of others in the organization, such as Morrocco Brown. Advisor is such a general title that it's hard to tell what he will be actually doing here. |
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
Nervousness aside, the Redskins had to do something to improve their pro talent evaluation. This could certainly help that.

Bruce Allen has been fired twice. I'd also say that the ownership had a role in players walking too. Smith did draft several good players. Smith knows the business and can scout players. This is a good move by the front office. |
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
I'm not worried about AJ Smith's ability to evaluate talent. He's proven that he has a good eye for talent already. I just hope that his attitude doesn't override his opinions. Luckily he'll be in a role here where he won't get to make big decisions like who goes.

Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
I dont like any guy dumb enough to hire Norv Turner.
|
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
^^ LOLOL
Yes, that is a black mark against him. At the same time, I think it goes more toward his desire for control - he needed someone who be his lackey and NT fits that bill. Just keep Smith away from any personnel/management decisions and keep him evaluating player talent and he will be a fine addition. |

AJ Smith was an ass who cared more about control and looking like the genius in charge. It worked when he focused on talent. When he focused on managing....well everything went to hell. |

In JKK's hay day he would not have lasted 2 years. All JKK cared about was building JKK stadium, in the end. Don't get me wrong he was an incredible owner. After all he did, as soon as he died, the name changed to Fedex. Kind of pissed me off. |

Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
My first thought of AJ Smith (from a paranoid Redskins fan point of view) was the 2nd coming of VC. But you guys, sort of, talked me off that ledge. I know he's a better talent evaluator than Vinnie, but he is the same arrogant, backbiting kinda fool that Vinnie was, or so I think. Maybe I am not off the ledge quite yet.

HTTR24-7.com @HTTR24_7 @SkinsOrNuthin 15 drafted Pro bowlers since 2003.. More Than anyone, including the Patriots. Not sure why Skins fans (especially on twitter) are flipping out about this.(not you in particular CR, just in general) AJ Smith is a very good talent evaluator. His main problem was his ego and bullheadedness with his players. He let quality talent walk away from the team without getting anything in return. We really don't know if some of this centered around San Diego having a cheap ass owner that didn't want to spend money. I wouldn't go as far as to put Vinny and Smith in the same category at all. Vinny had a low self esteem issue, Smith has a high self esteem issue. I don't give a shit what anybody says...this is a hell of a resume. Yup. I think he has a lot of manager Vinny in him. I don't think he will be making any personnel decisions though: BA: So, what do you think of this guy AJ? AJ: He's solid, don't overpay for him though. BA: Okay. Thanks. AJ: Also, I think I got a cheap guy to play ILB so you can pretty much void Fletcher's contract. MS: Shut up AJ. |
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
AJ is a lot of things....many negative, but he's not even near the same class of jackass that VC ended up being.
Bottom line here is the guy knows talent
Exactly. The Chargers have struggled as of late but thanks in large part to him they were among the most talented teams in the league for a while. Though he kind of sunk his own career by sticking with Norv for so long. Anyway on paper it looks pretty good to have him as a key player in the supporting cast. |
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
The thing I love about this Aj smith hiring is that if there's a player or two whom is available and mike likes one guy and Bruce likes the other AJ is there to say "___ is the better player, get him over ____"
|
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
good move if it happens. i can't dog it.
|
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
Sounds good to me! Any chance at improvement of talent evaluation is OK with me.

His time in San Diego was definitely marred by his bullheadedness at times, but in an advisory role here, Mike and Bruce can get all of his good and veto/shut down any of his bad. Hopefully that's how it plays out. |

Highly doubt it. Allen handles that mostly, and Shanahan has the final say over everything. "Executive" sounds better than "advisor" is all. |
Even if he took over some control of players I wouldn't mind.. guy built a machine in SD
|
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
2 positives with this hire - Another proven talent evaluator and seeker. And someone who can take some responsibilities from Shanahan to free him up.
One negative is his relationships with the people he works with. He may need to be babysat a little- especially in the beginning. |
Re: A.J. Smith Expected to Join Redskins Front Office As Advisor
Between smith and shanahan's mid to late round picks, the redskins should feel pretty confident with any rb picked up in the draft.
