Roster Review: Front 7 Defense

Alright fellas…fuck the name, fuck the uniform, and fuck the QB talk (for now)…let’s start to dive into the rest of the roster with free agency right around the corner.

Let’s start at defense Front 7 first because it’s less complicated but yet intriguing in especially one particular position.

D-Line starters back: Chase, Montez, Payne, Allen, Matty-I. Rotational, Bench: Shaka Toney JS-W, Toohill. Tim Settle is a free agent and a nice rotational piece. You bring him back? It’s gonna cost a pretty penny. Depending on what we think of Payne and Matty I who I believe both in last years of deals next year, that’s crucial in the Settle decision.

Linebackers: Starters: Holcomb and Davis. Rotational, Bench: Hudson, Mayo. Boston is a free agent and should be done.

DLine is solid with depth. Settle is the question and he is a good rotational piece especially against the run. I think you let him test the market. Don’t see a lot of movement here.

Linebackers…Ron has said Davis is an OLB and not a middle linebacker, Cole is built more for the outside, which leaves a massive hole at MLB. At eleven in the draft there are two outstanding prospects with Devin Lloyd from Utah and N. Dean from Georgia. I heard Keim say for the first time yesterday MLB could be an option in the first. Free agency is not great, but De’Vondre Campbell was an all pro last year for the Pack. I would be hesitant as he is a bit of a one year wonder and blew up as a 3-4 ILB. Another scenario would be 2 possible cut issues, Bobby Wagner in Seattle or Blake Martinez in New York. Giants cap position (Got Gettleman’ed) is horrific and Wagner would provide a lot of cap relief if they decide to move on from the 32 year old. I would be down for both.

Middle Linebacker is a position we need to get right on defense much like QB on offense. Any moves in free agency or the draft you like? Settle staying…then is Matty I or Payne going? I like our roster on the Dline mix with depth and Starters, but I’d pass on Settle getting a big deal. My preference at MLB would be to get an experienced general like Wagner or Martinez.

Jon Bostic is slow but knows the defense......however I would try to make a trade with the Falcons for Foye Olukun. This defense needs more speed.

I think Payne is underrated.
If we move on from anyone I would let Ionides walk. Guy is good but can’t play a full season.

JDR is the biggest weakness. I want to see Young and Sweat chasing QBs not doing lane assignments.

Payne is definitely a very good football player.

Allen is already re-signed (great thing imo). Don't think we can also keep Payne, Ioannidis, and Settle.

I think Settle would be cheaper to re-sign and probably won't be hurt as much as Ioannidis. I hope we can keep Settle on a multi-year deal. Then make a decision on keeping Payne or Ioannidis.

It's a good problem to have, I'd gladly keep any combo that only involves moving 1 of them.

What a breath of fresh air to have a smart/relevant thread, and I'm dead serious. Thanks for starting this Chico.

I feel a combo of Settle/Matty-I could potentially make up for Payne, if he's traded.

I do agree with John Keim that I feel that we need to bring a veteran pass rusher to mentor Sweat and Chase.

Mike LB is a priority, and I hope we get a vet free agent there, since we have two young guys in Holcomb and Davis on the outside that could also use the influence.

I do hope they bring back Landon, but at a restructured contract. He was a beast in that hybrid LB position.

In terms of DB, I really hope St. Juste is able to get his health together, dude was on the upswing IMO.

Re: Roster Review: Front 7 Defense

I'm not trading assets on defense this year. With that being said I would sign a quality 3rd defensive end. I think we lost something in letting Kerrigan walk last season. Maybe bring him back and right a wrong.

At Mike, I would draft Chad Muma from Wyoming. If you haven't seen him before, check him out on youtube, you will like what you see.

At free safety, if we cut collins I would make a run at the honey badger Tyrann Mathieu. Otherwise I would draft Jaquan Brisker FS Penn State.

First of, as Ruhskins said, thank you so much for this thread ! Let's try to keep it centered on this precise subject, and looking forward to the other threads for the rest of the roster !

Easy to say now, but I think Settle should've been extended a couple of seasons ago. Now I'm with you, he is going to ask for a decent contract, which he deserves, so unless we move on from one of the other 3 big guys, he most likely won't be back. Shame but you can't keep 4 quality starting caliber DT forever... And we will have a lot of big names to potentially bring back next offseason (Payne, Ioannidis, Sweat, Holcomb... just on our front 7).

LB... We knew last offseason we needed at least one big signing at this position... As ex-NFL LB we gave Ron and Jack the benefice of the doubt of knowing what they were doing at the position... No more of that, Bostic is horrible, after a decent first season here, we've had plenty of evidence of that.

Anthony Hitchens, Dont'a Hightower, KJ Wright, Christian Kirksey, Jarrad Davis, Anthony Barr ... I don't care who it is, give me a proven vet + at least a mid round pick LB !

Re: Roster Review: Front 7 Defense

A veteran pass rushing specialist would probably be a good idea, but the staff is high on JS-W and I think Shaka Toney has room to grow.

I love me some Payne, Matty I and Settle…but something has to give at DT. I think you keep your best player which means Payne stays. The DT market is stacked maybe make an offer to Settle which pays him like a high end rotational player with the intention of moving on from Matty I after next year when he is 30 and Settle is 25.

Olukun is a free agent…he is intriguing. His name came up when looking at free agent LBs

LB:
I could be wrong, but I think D Lloyd and N Dean are both projected to be Outside LBs. I think MLB in the first would be a reach. I do like Darrian Beavers in the round 2/3. I think they have to go out and sign a Veteran MLB though. Maybe Anthony Johnson from the Broncos would be a nice addition - then draft Beavers.

Davis-Beavers-Johnson-Holcomb would be a nice group.

DL:
Assuming we don't trade CY, Sweat, Payne... I think you make an offer to Settle, but my guess is he wants to test the market, and he should. We'll see how other teams value him. Either way, the D-line will be fine without him should he choose to go. He's a nice piece coming off the bench, but you can find his replacement in the draft or free agency.

Young-Allen-Payne-Iaonnidis-Draft/FA-Sweat would be nice as well.

Lloyd and Dean I’ve seen listed as mlb and outside. If here it’ll be in the middle. My preference is a vet there at this point, but slim pickings. Watching the waiver wire and be ready to pounce if cap casualties hit it.

In the mean time, signing a tier 2,3 vet there other than Bostic would be helpful. Mayo isn’t that guy they really like him as depth and as a teamer. Hudson didn’t take that step last year, he could be expendable.

One thing that wouldn’t shock me is if they take a DT in the draft if Settle leaves. Get a prospect they like while Payne and Matty I enter their last year of deals.

I think they try to extend Payne. I'm not sure they will get it done though. Holcomb, Payne, Flowers, and Ioannidis are all free agents next year...Fuller, Sweat, Gibson, and Curl are right behind them the following year. Time for some cap gymnastics over the next couple years especially if they trade for a big name QB. Absolutely have to draft starter quality players in the first 4 rounds.

You always need to be retooling through the draft. I’m gonna be completely honest, when I look at the roster, we have less holes than in recent memory or we seem to at least have a better plan than in the recent past.

Going into this years draft, “best player available” mantra actually is correct outside of the QB position (which is a biggy). Our roster allows us to really put aside needs and go full bpa

You leave my boy Matty alone. He wasn't fully recovered from his injury last season; he'll be much quicker this season; enough to terrorize QB's again with his inside pass rush.

Settle should have been traded last year because he could start on some teams and he had trade value. Now, we probably can't afford him as a FA and, once again, we'll lose a very good player without getting anything in return. I hate that.

You're right about JDR being our biggest weakness. That applies to every defensive player group.
