If Smith returns....HYPOTHETICALLY speaking.....

Scenario.....Alex Smith goes down in 2018 with a gruesome leg injury....the Redskins draft a QB in the second round...the rookie QB and McCoy both see playing time in 2019....the rookie QB shows tons of promise and leads the Redskins to a wild card win but throws 3 interceptions in the divisional round the next week in a tough loss on the road..next offseason McCoy retires and the rookie has been named the starter heading into 2020....Alex Smith is ready to return but the Redskins decide since Smith hasn't played in a long time its better to relegate him to be the young QB's backup but still have Smith as a team captain...the Redskins start off 6-2 with the young QB in his second year...but in the 9th game of the season he suffers a dislocated patella in his left knee...although the 2nd year QB is out for 4 games Gruden decides to play Smith the rest of the season....the Redskins win a wild card game for the 2nd year in a row...but once again lose in the divsion round the Redskins offense turn the ball over 8 times in the loss despite the defense getting 3 turnovers....Smith tosses 4 interceptions in the game (2) in the red zone and turns the ball over twice on a sack/fumble....going into 2021 do you give the young QB the starting QB job and make him a team captain and release Smith or trade Smith ? Or do you keep Smith on the team and have a QB competition during the 2021 training camp/preseason between both QBs ?

Why a dislocated patella? Spice it up a bit?

What happened between now and January that got the Redskins winning a play-off game? I would like to hear the rest of the story. I am admittedly pessimistic, that is my nature. Unless the Skins knock it out of the park on draft day I see a lot of Sundays cussing at the TV set and savoring any Redskin victory as I think they will be rare. Trying to look at the bright side the 4-12 (my prediction) 2019 season will get a nice high draft pick with Gruden and Allen sent to the unemployment office.

In this scenario there had to be a reason Alex gets the starting job back....the young qb has to heal and gets to learn from Smith despite showing promise....and Smith gets to play and help shake off the rust.

Heading into 2019 I think the team built on what it had done for the 1st 9 games in 2018....they draft a QB, WR, edge rusher and start winning games the next season(2019)......I really do stronngly believe this could really happen....in my fictitious scenario should the Redskins part with Smith or keep him after 2020 ?

Looks like you see the first half of 2018 as an indicator of the future and I see the last half as such. I think the 6-3 start last year was built on a house of cards, the Redskins got lots of breaks. Even if Smith doesn't go down that team would not end up continuing that pace and win 10 or 11 games.

You could be right....but we'll never know for mainly 2 reasons....with Smith the Redskins were leading the division for a number of weeks....and without him the QB play was far less than baboon waste....the QB play was extremely inferior including the games McCoy played....I could see the Redskins falling apart and going 6-3 to 9-7
losing very close games with Smith....

Part of it was with the offense being unable to sustain drives with McCoy, Sanchez, & Johnson it caused the defense to stay out on the field for far too long....so the defense was tired a lot the second half of the 2018 season....with Alex the offense was able to sustain drives and the defense was rested and did what it needed to do when they were out on the field.....the entire team collapsed after Alex's leg injury.....at worst I think they could've finished 10-6 with Smith.

I doubt Smith will ever play again and his contract is written to pay him even if he doesn't play. So why risk another injury? He'll be Haskins mentor until Smith retires.

With the price of quarterbacks going through the roof Alex was far from overpaid. Nothing wrong with the contract, not Allen's fault that Alex had a horrific injury.

I have heard lots of people criticize BA for lots of things, but our cap has been well managed for the past 8 years. Also, I don't think BA is the direct responsibility on cap matters anyway.

I'm not blaming BA for Smith's injury. That's impossible to predict. But signing a "good" QB who is 35 for a big-dollar, five-year contract doesn't make sense to me. Bruce Allen signed Alex Smith because of all the heat he was taking for letting Kirk Cousins go. They should have let Kirk leave the team at the end of his contract, versus keeping him with one-year contract extensions for two seasons. That wasn't planning for the future.

Alex Smith was an old QB who had decent numbers, but who played for very good teams. The Redskins were a mediocre team. Bruce Allen's QB decisions weren't looking at the long-term but as if the Redskins were one season from being an elite team. There are times the team just has to bite the bullet and actually rebuild. But BA seems to be happy if the team is 7-9 year after year. That's why his record as our "GM" (or whatever you want to call him) is so poor.

Smith seems like he is not ready to give up on NFL career yet.. I don't see how this will work for Smith unless he is willing to back up Haskins or Redskins trade him away.

After that injury and at his age the odds are extremely slim he plays again. Even if that bone heals perfect there could be plenty of other issues, his leg was pretty mangled. I cringe thinking about it. He needs to move on to the next phase of his life.

If Smith wants to push to come back I say good for him and I wish him well. I don’t know why some want to kick dirt on him and say he should move on. That’s his decision to make.

Because we don't want to see him risk his long term health. How many NFL players suffer in their 50's and up for what they did to their bodies when they were younger.

Re: If Smith returns....HYPOTHETICALLY speaking.....

I understand Smith's feelings on this. After am excellent career, who wants to go out that way?

My dad had something similar happen -- after 35+ years in his remarkable career and 2 months from retirement he had a mild heart attack (thankfully, he was OK, and this was 16 years ago now, and he's not had any follow up issues). But he didn't want to leave on that note, and so after being out for about 5 months, he un-retired and went back to work. In fact, he ended up working for another 7 years or so, and added a number of other huge accomplishments to his considerable list of achievements.

Points being that he wanted to retire on his terms, and probably wasn't ready to leave the career he loved when he was set to retire initially in any event.

I bet that Smith is feeling the same way. And I wish him every success as he pursues that goal. He's surely earned the right to do so.

Re: If Smith returns....HYPOTHETICALLY speaking.....

Smith hopes to be back "at some point" . . . if he is healthy in 2020 why not? They will only have 2 QBs under contract. And they will still be paying him.

GridIron26 06-22-2019 09:56 AM

Re: If Smith returns....HYPOTHETICALLY speaking.....

I am not against Smith coming back, in fact, I probably would want to do same thing if I was him. I am just saying that I don't see how this will work out for Smith and Redskins since we drafted Haskins. Only scenario I can see where Smith returns to Redskins is if he accepts mentor/back-up role.

Re: If Smith returns....HYPOTHETICALLY speaking.....

The Haskins pick mean we have officially moved on...there is no way Alex plays this year. Let Alex continue to heal and help Haskins in the classroom. There is no way I’m hoping for Alex to return as the QB for Skins bc that mean Haskins is failing.

Re: If Smith returns....HYPOTHETICALLY speaking.....

I think it is extremely wishful thinking by Alex, and i wish him the best and hope that he gets back to 100% health and his day to day life gets back to normal. It just seems so hard to imagine a guy coming back from that horrible an injury at his age, he would be what, at least 37 by the time he gets back to 100% health, if he ever gets there.

But he has always taken such good care of his body, perhaps he comes back at 37/38 and gets to play a few more years. As others have said on here, late 30's to 40 isn't really that old for a QB any more these days, but i do think it changes a little bit when you have had the injuries he's had.

Tom Brady could probably put on cruise control and play to at least 45 as long as he suffers no major injuries, maybe even longer. I think Brees could do the same. But they didn't have a gruesome injury like Alex Smith. Still wish him the best though and hope he gets peace with it, in the event that he can't come back.

I think httr stands for hater. Seriously, dude, referring to the man as “garbage” is just wrong. There aren’t two categories of QB - elite and garbage. Smith has had a nice career and had us up two games in the NFCE when hurt. Give the man a little respect.
