What's Joe Gibbs' Job?

Just curious... It's the offseason and I need something to talk about:

few questions for the forum

1) What is he actually doing during the season? (anyone have any insight?)

2) How long is he going to stay? (does he even need to?)

3) Is Daniel Snyder a good owner? (we've heard it from the media "spends to much" blah blah... but has Dan snyder finally proven a himself)

4) Who's our competition in 07? (honestly who will beat us next year?... in my opinion no-one in the NFC east)

Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?

Good question I was wondering, bc I am assuming that Sanders will take a big role in the offensive this year. I do not know where it leaves Gibbs, beside a moral leader. I am not saying that having Gibbs is bad. Believe me I love having Gibbs, it brings life back to the team. But it is interesting trying to see how everything will fit.

Gibbs is just the head coach... Al Saunders runs the offense and Gregg Williams runs the defense.

he's the leader. the big guy. the head honcho. the big cheese.

Oversees everything and make sure everybody does their job... and helps keep the moral of the team positive.

1. calling all the shots, having final say on a major moves, and he is the reason Saunders came here, and G. Williams stayed here.

2. he stays at least 2 more years, if we win it all this year he is gone

3. Snyder is an improving, as of right now, no he is not a good owner, he is an okay owner. 2 playoff appearances in 6 years is not good.

4. OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD - the giants just signed 3 defensive backs, and I'm sure it is in retaliation for our WR signings, they will be tough. Eli is only going to get better. Seattle is a good team still. Arizona might be tough if there D can step up and if they get Vernon Davis. Tampa could be strong again, Simms is only going to get better, and I would watch out for the rams, the offense is still there and they got some good defensive players.

It's pretty old school to for a head coach not to call the offense nor defense... but of course back then, it wasn't a coordinator calling the plays either, it was the QB.

One example I did hear was in a particular situation (4th and 2 for example) he makes the call to punt or go for it... and al saunders will call the actual play.

correct.

Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?

Joe Gibbs essentially runs the team. More importantly, though, he makes the team run smoothly and efficiently. A case example, Randle-El is being courted by MANY different teams, but at 12:05 he gets a call from Joe Gibbs personally. Randle-El is impressed. BUT, what impresses Randle-El more?...Joe Gibbs asks to speak with Randle-El's wife. It is the little things that Joe Gibbs does, but essentially he makes the Redskins a team and instills that something extra that really makes a formidable team.

So, what exactly is Joe Gibbs' job? I cannot answer that...but, what does he do for our team? I would try to put a value on it, but like the Visa commercial goes...it's PRICELESS!

we did set a record for playoff crappy-ness. Worst offensive outing ever in a playoff game. We had zero, no offense... now with a boosted receiving corps and a potential superstar QB... with weapons like portis, cooley, moss, sellers, the list goes on. Our defense will be better w/ the addition of Arch. + carter. No-one in the NFC will beat us. Going 5-1 last year with a team everyone can agree is not as talented as this years team. We'll go 6-0 in NFC east.

1. He will contribute ideas for the offensive game plan. He will make sure all coaches have what they need and are doing their jobs. He will make sure players understand what is expected of them and perform up to standards. He will report to Dan Snyder. He will interact with the media. On game day, the buck will stop with him on all big decisions like going for it/punting, etc. He will encourage the fans to make their presence felt at home games.

2. He will stay for the duration of his five year contract and yes he needs to. Have we forgotten the the sorry state of affairs under Steve Spurrier already. The only reason that people can suggest that Gibbs might be unnecessary, is that Gibbs is SO NECESSARY.

3. Joe Gibbs seems to think he is a GREAT owner which works for me. All the hate from the media is the result of them needing an antagonist for their simple minded narratives.

4. Parcells will be the biggest threat in the East. Tampa will be tough because of their defense. Seattle is a threat for home field because of their lousy division opponents. The AFC will field a strong slate of teams again as well.

gibbs is the face of the team, he runs all the PR (insane amounts of interviews) and makes sure everyone gets along. he can also over rule decisions of any kind and makes suer everyone does their job and has what they need (players, assistants etc)...

Re: What's Joe Gibbs' Job?

danny so far (since gibbs came here) has shut up and signed checks, and we haven't lost a player we've gone after yet. so over the last two years i'd say he has been a good owner.

I totally agree. I think Snyder has matured. He was fresh in the NFL (2000) and just went on a rampage and didn't have any guidance. The smartest thing he's done is give gibbs control. As far as being a good owner.... well we have Joe Gibbs, Al Saunders, Greg Williams and a staff unlike any other. I'd say he's done a fine job (as of recent) and he's gone above and beyond expectation as an owner.

We're a superbowl contender now, and we haven't been since 1992.
