More signs the world is coming to an end (Peter King news)

Last week, Peter King said his mind was open to the idea of Art Monk entering the Hall.

This week (specifically here) he said the following flattering things about the Redskins - emphasis mine:
PLAY JASON CAMPBELL. NOW. From Charles of Birmingham, Ala.: "What do you think the Redskins should do concerning Jason Campbell? He clearly has talent but it seems they don't want to give him legitimate snaps.''

Well, you know Joe Gibbs is a veteran-loving guy. But he picked Campbell in the first round for a reason -- he loves the kid's potential. I do too. I remember sitting in Phil Simms' office in northern New Jersey 16 months ago looking at the quarterbacks in the 2005 draft. And I remember thinking: Campbell's the best guy out there. If I were Gibbs, I would give him an equal shot in training camp. I don't think that's going to happen. I think Mark Brunell will have to be a C-minus quarterback this summer for Campbell to get a real shot to play early in the season.
Since Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers were supposed to be dueling for the top pick, that's rare praise. Perhaps revisionist history, but I'll take my love where I can get it (which may be why my marriage works so well).

I kind of feel like this gives Peter King an out if the Skins offense isn't doing that well during the season; he can say, "see, I said all the way back in June that Campbell should be playing more." Maybe King has just jaded me that badly though.

If Mark Brunell plays the way he did through week 14 (or whenever the second Giants game was -- before he was injured) then we won't need Jason Campbell just yet.

I remember Campbell getting alot of pre-draft praise from other guys too, I think Pasta Belly might be one of them.

Personally I like that they're bringing him along slowly. You can see the coaching staff making a real effort to make sure his fundamentals are sound and that he's 110% prepared mentally. They don't want to rush him or let him develop any bad habits. He's going to see alot of work during the preseason, we should really have a good idea of how he's progressing by the end of August.

Listening to the Brian Mitchell show and an interview with Darryl Green a minute ago. He said he would not go against Joe Gibbs conservative wish's by assessing the 2006 to high. He comprimised and said they "are a Super Bowl caliber team". BM told him about the media in general picking the skins to be third in the division. He was stunned! His response was WTF, did we not kick Dallas ass twice last year, and the others who will be owning us in the up coming season? How do you get third from that? He then reinforced it with "and look who we picked up in the offseason" (players and coach's). he was highly insulted at that.................so am I. For those of you responding, I am purely the ad hominem argumentum

I love the idea of bringing Campbell along slowly, too, since we don't need him quite yet. Look at Carson Palmer, sitting a whole season was great for him, whereas it may have ruined Kyle Boller forever (don't bring up Peyton because he's the exception). I do wish Campbell got some playing time last year, but we were never really in a position to put him in a real game.

By the way Matty, almost didn't recognize you with that snazzy new avatar.

From King's Post - 2005 Draft Column in the "10 things I think I think" section:

"3. I think, when history judges this draft, one of the best five players in it will be Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell, who went to Washington at No. 24. That isn't to say Washington did a smart thing, paying a ransom for the pick -- particularly when it already has another quarterback there who's good enough to win with and considering Joe Gibbs will be at some racetrack by the time Campbell is an experienced starter. I'm just commenting on the quality of the player. He's good."

King hyped Campbell before the draft and said he was going to be a steal for someone. He just thought we paid too much (see my signature below). Given where we finished and the first rounder we gave up, I will be more than satisfied if JC ends up being one of the top players from his draft and our franchise QB for the next 10 years.

Thanks, Brian. But "universal truths''? I have none of those, except that the Dallas Cowboys will win the Super Bowl this year.

Except he said the above.

So I guess Gibbs is going back to NASCAR in 2007?? LOL

I hope we've heard the end of these stupid rumors about Gibbs not fulfilling his contract. If he wins the SB again I can understand him stepping away early, but he's here for 5... at least.

I think Gibb's is starting to have a GOOD time! He has the ULTIMATE staff in place. He will have much more fun in 2006, (providing the skins do well). He will fulfill his deal and maybe he signs new deal as President

He said that by the time Campbell is an experenced starter Gibbs will be at a race track. That is pretty true if Gibbs is only here for five years. This last statment is just common sence and he did not really say anything that 99% of the people who follow football and knows Gibbs don't already know.

Back when he said this it was a popular thing to say Gibbs would retire early, and to me that's general feeling I get from that statement.

Re: More signs the world is coming to an end (Peter King news)

I am really stoked to see what Campbell can do over the next few seasons but I wouldn't play him until it is clear he is ready. He comes accross as the kind of player that given time could be a stud but if he is rushed could be a disaster.
