Training Camp -- Day 1 rundown.

Hey Guys,

Had a blast at camp as hot as it was. There were a few big things.

First things first, big number 45 (Sellers) went down and was carted off the field. From first glance it DIDN'T look serious. He was on the ground for a bit, got up without putting weight on his leg, then next thing I knew he was back on the ground and carted inside. If I had to guess I'd guess minor, but you never know.

As far as pictures go, Ill be sorting through them tomorrow. I had just an awful vantage point for pictures, so most won't be worth anything. But I was able to sneak in some good views of the offense.
The Good:
Andre Carter: This kid is a beast. He made both Jansen and Samuels looked stupid. He damn near just knocked Jansen over and just crushed his competition. Phillip Daniels did really well too. We could have a pass rush from the front four this year. Hold on to your seats!
The WRs:TAYLOR JACOBS WATCH! Made some great catches. All these guys are great. Even the rookies. This will be a much stronger position than I thought!
The Bad:
Jon Janseon Brother didn't show up today. He was getting pushed around and owned by the defensive linemen.
Randy Thomas He gets a bit of a break coming off an injury, and he redeemed himself with a good performance the 3rd time they went. C Griff. put him in his place though.
Mark Brunell If our season ends up relying on him, it could be bad. It's the first day of training camp and offensive players, especially QBs take the longest to come around. So take this as a grain of salt right now. But that was my observation for the day
Offense:
First things first. If you thought hiring Al Saunders was a good signing before. Wait till you see him in training camp. This guy is nuts! When they were doing 11s on 11s. He'd follow the running back yelling at them. Then he'd give them props at the end of the run. It wasn't a jog either, he's full out sprinting after these guys. At one point the crowd roared when he damn near outran Taylor Jacobs telling him he better push it to the endzone fast! This guy was what Bugel is to our OLine to our skill positions.

Most of the offensive line guys looked very good. I had a great view of Dline vs Oline. Dockery looked really impressive, rabach looked great too. Samuels did solid, Randy Thomas didn't quite look 100%, and Jansen looked.. poor.

The RB position. Boy do we have a flock of big boys. The RB position looked more like our Oline. Portis didnt get a ton of reps, but broke his first run in 11s to the house untouched. Looked good. Rock looked awesome. Betts dropped the rock once or twice but looked solid. Jesse Lumdsen (37) was a big suprise out there.

The WR position. Who the hell are we going to cut. Santana Moss dropped a lot of balls, and if this were a blind race, he might have been on my cut list. He dropped a lot of punts, dropped a lot of balls, didn't seem to try very hard for some (and that cost him when Archelleta put a hit on him after half assing a ball). That said, they ran a reverse to him, and christ is he a quick little bastard. He weaved through the defense to the house. Exciting play. Half the crowd was looking on the wrong side of the field (including myself for half the play) because it was run so great. Lloyd and Jacobs made some really big catches. Randel El looked solid. Ataveus Cash (WHO #13) looked very good. As did Mike Espy (#11). Jimmy Farris and Thrash made plays too. I would not want to have to make the cuts here.

The QB position. Im a bit biased, but I thought Brunell looked bad. Throwing into double coverage. Putting it high and low. Wasn't very accurate. Campbell looked good. For the most part on, his deep ball is extremely pretty. Todd Collins didn't do much to impress me, but he's a decent 3rd stringer (cant see him passing Campbell). That said, it's the first day of training camp and a new system. I'll give Brunell a break.

Overall: The groups looked really good. Cooley looked very fast and solid out there. Played strong, didn't really notice any other TEs (Fauria) doing much. Our offense looks solid, we didn't see a ton of passing out of the QBs, but when we did it was solid. Al Saunders is just an amazing coach, he was out there running and working hard. Loved to watch it, got the crowd pumped. Etc. Unfortunately, our O-Line isn't looking horribly great. I thought this was sure to be the strongest part of our team but they struggled a bit out there. Hopefully this gets pulled together or it could hurt us!

Defense:
Defensive Line: WOOOOOOO WHEEEEEEEE. These guys were looking slim and mean. I knew they'd be tough when the whole team during stretches got on all fours, lifted a leg, and started twirling it around (remind anyone else of a certain sack dance?). Daniels, Griffin, and Carter all put huge moves on O line starters. Really loved seeing that. Other notables that did well were Salava'e (sp?) and Renaldo Wynn. I really like what I saw from this group.
Linebacker: Definitely not looking like our strongest position. They played well, but nothing spectacular. No one made a big play from LB position where I got excited. I think that part of it was I wasn't able to get a good look at them, but from my limited exposure, not much here. Marcus Washington didn't seem too pumped today, maybe it was just me!
Cornerback: Carlos Rogers and Shawn Springs both looking really good. The nickle guy (forget his name) was looking pretty solid too. I think this will be our strength unless the opposition spends a lot of time in 3-4 receiver sets. Our starters are strong though.
Safety: First of all, I found it a bit interesting that Sean Taylor wasn't in the starting lineup. We had Arch and Prialou (sp) back there. To me that sounds like the NFL will be handing down a suspension of some sort on Mr. Taylor. Not a good sign. Taylor Jacobs also picked a ball out of the air that should have been Seans to the house. Great play by Jacobs, little lazy by Taylor. Arch looked solid. Put a big hit on Sanatana Moss, looked good against the run -- all around a solid group again.
Overview: I feel our defense has some serious questions at LB and DB depth, but I think we'll be top 10 with an aggressive scheme and lots of talent starting. Good performance by them today. They were hitting hard and with attitude, which we just love to see!

Final Thoughts: It was a great time and our team looks good. There's still a lot of work to be done. I'm excited to watch Williams and Saunders who seem to have a very similar mentallity attack attack attack. As training camp rolls along we'll see more complex drills and our running game was already looking very good. RB screen plays were going for big yards too. Especially with Rock and Portis.

If you have any questions, post em here and I'll do my best to answer them!

good report.

taylor is probably 2nd string cause of missed workouts (again). this is the third time it's happened to him in 3 offseasons. GW wouldn't do that cause of a league suspension that hasn't been announced yet.

sucks our OL and moss were dogging it, hopefully they'll be up and up by friday when i go check it out.

I was there too :) It was hat as hell out there! The best place for picks that I saw was at the top of the hill as you come in, alot of people where there sitting but from that position you can see the all the fields. Are u in the media/ hospitality section? If not come early crowd come quick for these practices Also go to Home Depot, get yourself a small ladder like a 4ft one, it could give you an advantage in the crowds to stand on one of those. Good job man!

thanks daseal!!!

did the o seem to be grasping the playbook?? was everybody on the same page or was brunell and the other qbs throwing to places where nobody was? i think that is a good indicator of players not knowing the system. great job and i will be looking forward to everybody elses opinions on the team since i wont be able to attend any practices.

On the offensive end, did everything happen smoothly, or was their a lot of coaching necessary before or after the play?

Re: Training Camp -- Day 1 rundown.

Musings...

I wonder how much of Brunell's inaccuracy was because of his hand injury from minicamp?

Was the nickel guy Kenny Watson? We should expect a lot out of him - he was a starter for Jax last year.

I wonder if Taylor's teammates got in his grill after last year's excuses and mediocre play. If they really think he's as good as they claim, they should demand he show it in every practice and game situation he gets in.

i love this excerpt...

Gregg Williams is in mid-season form. After special teams work, the offense and defense shifted to separate fields. The first task for his charges? Up-downs. 40 of them in all. After the last rep, Williams shouted out, "And that's 40. Welcome back." Then, after issuing instructions, players walked toward their position coach. Williams barked, "We don't walk here. We don't walk here." Players broke into a jog. 4:30 p.m. ET

Re: Training Camp -- Day 1 rundown.

The inaccurcies from the QB position looked like they were from rusty play, not inability to grasp the playbook. The play from the QB position wasn't awful, but it must get better.

QBs tend to be rusty this time of year, so I wouldn't be too concerned. Brunell started camp slow last year but picked things up in the preseason games.

I doubt Im going tomorrow, but I might give it a go. If all three QBs were rookies with same background, etc. Campbell would have been my guy.

BigSKINBauer 07-31-2006 11:48 PM

Re: Training Camp -- Day 1 rundown.

i was there. Andre carter is a mother f...ing beast. Like deseal said he made jansen and samuels look silly. It was nothing to him and samuels is a pro bowler. On Jacobs, he looked good but i didn't see anything amazing. he caught his balls and gave up early a few times. One time Saunders got all up on his ass and told him to keep running which made me yell out yeah saunders and saunder's enthusiasm drew a huge applause from the audience. Jacobs like got touched and stopped and saunders ran over and told him to get in the endzone. Jacobs didn't go full speed even then because griffin was staying with him. I heard someone behind me talking about Jacobs having no heart.

Ladell dropped a few balls on passes and fumbled one off a hand off. People started to get a little upset by his performance. I also agree with daseal on Jansen. Jon really sucked today. I mean he was embarrassed. When he was walking out and didn't have time to sign some fan yelled out something along the lines of, you are just mad because you sucked today. A bit out of line. I don't know if jansen could hear it but i did and i was standing pretty far from the guy. But it was true, jon was seemingly upset and it had to be due to his suckage on the field.

I disagree about thomas. Thomas put griffin on the ground and like laid on top of him. It was a pancake. He destroyed him. OTherwise i didn't see thomas doing anything bad on the one on one drills. On a few of plays where more were playing i saw thomas make good blocks. Especially on one where he rolled out and was pushing numerous people out the way.
Al saunders is just as cool as g w. Al would chase the players into the endzone all while yelling shit. He is awesome. He got cheers numerous times. My boi.

Arch is a mother f...ing beast. He hit santana mid air and destroyed him. My friend i was with was pretty pissed saying that he is hitting to hard for practice. It was a pretty good hit. I saw the jacobs catch on sean a bit different. I saw sean coming in and from what i saw, and different things were happening all over the place so i could have missed it, it looked like sean had the opportunity of absolutely destroying jacobs. Like Jacobs wouldn't have to worry about making the team because he would be dead. Sean let him go instead of laying an amazing hit. Jacobs was doing a post to the middle and taylor was coming the other way.

Kerry owned taylor. I thought taylor was going to finish his life right then and there. taylor got him but he broke away for a td. I am thinking if it was a game sean would have hit him as hard as he could and the play would be over.

Now for those of you who have followed what i say about the QB situation you know its brunell's job. Today he mad me really upset. He sucked. He couldn't throw screen passes. He was horrible. He overthrew moss and if you over throw moss you have a problem because if he can't catch up to a long pass then it was really too far. One pass just sorta looked like the 04' passes where it would just hit the ground 12 yards away even though the receiver was 20 yards away. It was pretty bad.

This is my first training camp. I really didn't like the way they were playing today. I went in more excited than i came out. ANDRE CARTER is going to be a pro bowl player. Daniels played well. The d-line is strong. Outside of that i wasn't really that impressed. The WRs were solid but i was upset about o-line play and QB play. Brunell was making me sick. I am thinking that this is early and they need to get in a groove so i am not going to be that hard on them but i thought the team didn't look great. Lets hope they improve. I don't expect to go tomorrow because of the

Daseal 07-31-2006 11:56 PM

Re: Training Camp -- Day 1 rundown.

To the whole Thomas/Griff thing. I basically saw Griff and Thomas go at it 3x in a row. First two times Griff owned him, 3rd time he pushed him into a stalemate. He was solid for the rest of the day, guess I just have high expectations for Randy Thomas!

As far as the Taylor/Jacobs thing. As I mentioned, my neck was a bit crooked trying to catch all the action. I saw Taylor fly to the ball, and I saw Jacobs grab it and turn up the sidelines. Sean seemed to be upset from the play, put his head up and hands on his hips (A hearty laugh at I WISH I WOULDA SUCKA). However, depth perception is a bitch and your account is most likely more reliable than mine.

Re: Training Camp -- Day 1 rundown.

The question now is, if Campbell plays a lot better than Brunell in training camp and preseason, who do we start? I hate to bring up this discussion again, but it might be worth some merit.

BigSKINBauer 08-01-2006 02:34 AM

Re: Training Camp -- Day 1 rundown.

campbell is hella accurate. I saw them both and campbell played better but i don't want to see jason just yet. Brunell is a vet and i just don't see someone coming into their first year and taking this ship to the super bowl and that SHOULD be our goal because that is the goal of any good team.

Daseal, you could definately be right about the jacobs/tayor play. That is only how it looked to me. I felt taylor was just saying how bad he could have hurt jacobs. I said to my friend that taylor could have made the keep jacobs or not decision for us by killing him. My friend said we would probably keep jacobs anyways, because we always end up doing that.

For those that didn't go, make sure you make it out to a practice because you have to see saunders in action. I love GW due to his attitude with the players and saunders is the same way. saunders was running with TJ and trying to knock out the ball of other player hands. He is so serious. He got more applause than anyone there yesterday. I now have no doubt that our coaching staff is the best ever in this league. GW and saunders seem like guys that will get close to the players and be hard asses while gibbs can just delegate what he wants. Gibbs will have more time for game plans and player evaluation, which he has done amazingly over the past few years. Just look at taylor and cooley in the draft of 04' and i am sure next year rogers will be a huge playmaker and campbell will be ready to be a league high passer.

I feel our Lbs are somewhat weak, or were today. Like daseal said marcus wasn't a force on the field as where none of them. Cooley is truly a fan favorite by the way. He got a ton of cheers just for motioning.

I plan on going again before the end but i don't know when. I am thinking i can go next week sometime because a lot of people i want to go with can then. Again when are the rest of you going?

1 question:
I am coming from DC and i had directions telling me to take exit 9 on 267 west, i think, but there was a sign on the road that said go to exit 7. SO i was like i'll just follow the signs and disregard my directions. I went past 9 and before 8 i hit a $3.20 toll. My friend and I were like, Snyder is a sly mother f...er. Telling us to take 7 and probably taking a cut, well played.
Obviously he wasn't taking a cut but i am curious, which way do you all go coming from DC?

Here we go!! It all starts now fellas!! I expect the offense to crawl before they walk, just gotta be patient, from QB all the way to WR, we'll get it together. Plus we play great "D" which will take us a long way. Wonder how many games Taylor will be suspended for-any word on that?

At that point if he is still missing WRs bad, we could be looking at another 2004 situation, and might have to turn to Campbell for some on the job tutoring.

Next time, get off at Exit 9B (Route 28 towards Sterling), then 625 West (Waxpool Road), then right on Loudon County Parkway, and right on Redskins Park Drive. And it's not Snyder...at that point, the Dulles Tollroad becomes the Dulles Greenway.

Hey guys, the Defense is always better than the Offense at the beginning and then it will change. However, I think Our Defense is better than our Offense anyway, anytime, so maybe our Offense will always look bad playing our Defense and not against other teams Defenses. I mean seriously, we have a top 5 Defense IMO, but we probably Don't have a top 5 Offense YET.
