You're right about Carter and Archuletta, but you couldn't be more wrong about many other recent additions. I would count Marcus Washington, Shawn Springs, Cornelius Griffin, and Randy Thomas big impact FA signings who all played significant roles in getting us to the second round of the playoffs last year. That said, I'm on record preferring the Philly/New England approach of stockpiling draft choices to build a team more inexpensively and to fill select needs through free agency. This regime places zero value on the draft and seems to feel that money can fill all needs. This approach has left us with precious little depth, and several players consuming more cap money than their actual worth. |

Most Redskin Teams are made of veteran guys. Don't you guys remember the "Over the Hill Gang" under George Allen?

Re: D.C. Free agent signings
Good to hear from you atomicnixon. Although in the past I agreed with the idea of bringing in veterans to shape a team, I think the salary cap has forced most teams to change their approach. Every team needs guys with character and good work ethic (veterans are a sure way to bring that to the table), but the salary cap limits a teams ability to spend on guys like that. If I personally were a general manager, I'd only have a few actual stars on my roster and rely more on signing underated guys who have chips on their shoulders. Guys like that develop a team spirit that says "us against the world." When you have enough guys with that kind of motivation and fire, it becomes contagious and makes a team dangerous.

Re: D.C. Free agent signings
you can bring in vet min guys that can help, but you can't toss out huge contracts to old guys (injuries, increasing yearly pay for decreasing performance is a bad idea, etc), and you can't win playing the FA game unless you're batting WELL above .500 due to the costs of making big money mistakes.
even for thomas - chad morton, john hall, and lav coles didn't work out. overall we still won there since hall and chad were cheap and thomas and moss (also relatively cheap long term deal) are studs. morton wasn't bad either, but he was released due to a lenghty injury and to many fair catches. |
