Mel Kiper on Monk
Mel Kiper Jr was on ESPN radio last night and was asked by the host, Jason Smith what he thought about Curtis Martin being considered for the Hall of Fame. Kiper went off. He said the HoF was a joke and that it was a travesty that Art Monk isn't in already. He said the selection process was no more than a bunch of guys sitting in a room and throwing out names. He mentioned bias, vindictive attitudes and sabotage when sending or preventing players from the Hall. He was extremely upset about Monk and said that the HOF was essentially a joke. It was great to hear him so passionate about our boy Art.

That just made my day a little brighter.

Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
He said Lenny P told him how they select the HoF'ers. Sit in a room and throw darts at a list of names.

Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
How did the host respond to the Monk comments?

Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
Martin is like the Monk of RBs. A vastly underrated guy who did his job, didn't complain, and had a long and successful career. It is a shame to hear Martin getting pub when Monk continues to get the snub.

But Martin will benifit from playing more of his career in the internet/fantasy football/NFL Network era. More people probably know about martin and his accomplishments and that's why he's getting the pub now. Plus, he's just now retiring, so that helps. Just a thought. |

Very well said Matty. Neither player ever tooted their own horn, they just showed up, and did their respective jobs very well over many years. That Monk has 3 rings as part of his strong resume makes his snub even a greater travesty. |

Just a thought.[/quote] Very true. Back when Monk played we didn't have the internet and the 24/7 in your face media coverage. But the guys that vote are all old enough to have seen Monk play with their own eyes. That alone should speak for itself. |

I think that is the biggest single reason why Monk isn't in the HoF. Unfortunately, self-promoters make the highlight reels and get more than their fair share of praise. |
Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
The HOF is a joke and that's sad. I just can't believe that players like Lynn Swann, the other steeler wr ---can't think of his name, are in the HOF w/ #'s that are not even in the same league as monk's.

Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
Wow...Kiper made some huge points with me on that. I think the guy gets unfairly ridiculed a lot and this confirms to me that he does have some sense at least.

Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
Well, at the rate LT and a couple of others (Alexander, possibly Dunn, maybe Jamal Lewis) are going, Martin might not be in 4th place by the time he's eligible for the HoF. I'll be interested to hear Peter King explain that one if Monk isn't in the Hall by then, since he uses that excuse against Monk.

i have always had respect for kiper. he studies football, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. he was a draft connoisseur long before it was cool. and generally knows what he is talking about |

That is basically my feeling but youi hear a lot of people bashing him for some reason. Maybe because he is so opionated. The guy lives and breathes the draft 24/7/365. He literally only does NFL draft prep for the entire year for his job. He knows what he is talking about better than almost anyone alive. Even college scouts don't know as much as he does. |
Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
I have always told my wife that WHEN Monk gets in we are going no matter what. He'll get in. Just don't know when.
