The meeting with Bethard
 

I am just wondering - does anyone have any inside information as to how the meeting went between Bobby Bethard and Synder a couple of years back? I remember reading in the paper that Bethard said the Redskins could not meet his compensation demands and that talks broke down soon thereafter. I find this extremely hard to believe that Synder could not afford one of the best GM's in the business. when the Reskins have more coaches than most teams have players.

I can't remember what is was but BB probably wanted too much control. I don't think it was over money. How could it be about money? Dan S. overpays everyone.

Beathard didn't want to work so hard anymore. Nor did his wife want him to. He tried being a "consultant" for the Falcons back in 2002 but he found that he just couldn't "half-ass" it and spent too much time away from home.

He was ready to retire and just spend time with his family in California, and deservedly so.

Yeah I don't think the process went very far. Snyder put out a feeler and Beathard basically said no thanks.

Bethard and Joe Gibbs dont like each other. If I remember correctly, Gibbs threatened to quit if Bethard was not let go. The next year Gibbs retired. Bethard and Gibbs beef was, Gibbs liked to play his veterans and Bethard wanted to play the young guys. Who would have guessed Gibbs was like that. So, no one starts calling me a Gibbs hater, I still would rather have Gibbs for at least three more losing seasons, before I would fire him.

The Beathard talk came when Spurrier was here, not Gibbs.

Here was what Beathard had to say about it:

“To be candid, I’m really in between [being interested and not being interested],” Beathard said. “I had a good time with Dan Snyder. I was comfortable with him. He was different than what I had read. But I’m not sure how I feel right now. I’ve become a Redskins fan again. I’m thrilled they got Steve. I’m not sure if I want to get back in now. If I feel I could make the commitment, I would. I’ll probably talk with them again, but I just don’t know right now.”

Bethard would have fit in good here. He used to toss draft picks away left and right. The only difference is he could get something in return.

You are right, in many ways. He screwed up alot of high draft picks, except for Monk and Green. But, he made many late round steals. He also brought in Gibbs and made many great teams.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I don't think Gibbs would have had nearly as much success without Bethard

No, Beathard left after the '88 season, then Charley Casserly took over. Casserly was the GM when Gibbs retired.

But yes, I remember reading that the relationship between Gibbs and Beathard was tense at times.

Bobby Beathard's relationship was tense with a lot of people, not just Gibbs. He didn't get along with Pardee, or with Bobby Ross either.

With gibbs it was over personell [go figure], Ross wasen't a big time coach, and niether was Pardee, it's tough to soar with Eagles when you work with turky's.

no he was'nt a big time coach,he only got the chargers to the superbowl and won a national championship with georgia tech,but he was'nt a big time coach!(offis,what a stroker)
