Bill Parcells is overrated!!!
Bill Parcells gets all this press for being a great coach, but the man hasn't done squat since he parted ways with Bellichick. I hate to hear these uninformed supposed sports experts gush all over Parcells when he hasn't won a playoff game since 1998. Parcells couldn't carry Joe Gibbs jockstrap. Gibbs is a far superior coach even though it has been a tough season this year. In 15 years this will be only Gibbs 3rd losing season, in 19 seasons Parcells has five. Gibbs has a 17-6 playoff record while Parcells is only 11-7. I think there's only one active coach on Gibbs level and that would have to be the aforementioned Bellichick, who's not even close to Gibbs when it comes to class and professionalism.

you get what i mean

Re: Bill Parcells is overrated!!!
Both are great coaches, and Parcells has been one the few coaches to get the better of Gibbs throughtout their career. I love our coach too but he needs to be more hands on like Parcells, and not just delegate to the many assitant head vice-sub coaches that we have.

Re: Bill Parcells is overrated!!!
I remember early this year that Gibbs said that our coaching staff is one of the hardest working in the league........Hmmm, not so much in my opinion. These guys at times look lost and unprepared at crucial times.

Re: Bill Parcells is overrated!!!
what does overrated mean in your eyes? not winning the super bowl? all i know is i wouldn't take anyone over coach Gibbs, but if he were to retire, and parcells wanted to take over, i would be happy. and as far as bellichek, don't get me started. he was going no where fast in new england until drew bledsoe gets hurt. and he wasn't even thinking about making a qback change. and the rest, as they say, is history. how well did he do with the talent less browns? its all about the players, my friend

They stay late and try hard, they just haven't seen the results. |

Even good players made Barry Switzer look like an NFL genius. You can be the greatest coach in the world, but if you haven't got the players then you're probably going nowhere. There isn't a season that proves that point more than this one. What I was saying with the Parcells is overrated thing is that he's hyped up like he's the greatest coach ever not named Lombardi, but his last playoff victory was in 1998 with the Jets. The media gushes all over Parcells but have seemed to forgotten just how great Gibbs was and what he can still bring to the table. I think it's probably because Parcells likes to draw attention to himself (just watch his press conferences) and Gibbs is humble and respectful. At least that's one factor to it. |
Re: Bill Parcells is overrated!!!
I've been saying that about Parcells for years.. Yes he won 2 Super Bowls so I'll give due respect for that, but his record isn't standout and he hasn't won a playoff game in over 10 years. Parcells gets all that pub for 2 simple reasons, he is a great soundbite/media favorite and he coached in the areas where he can maximize his media exposure (NYG, NYJ, NE-ESPN's backyard and Dallas). If he coached the Seahawks, Chiefs, Browns and Titans and had the same record and same presence he would be regarded as a good coach but nowhere revered as he is now.

Excellent post! Great Points! |
Re: Bill Parcells is overrated!!!
A few things...
1. No question Parcells is a "personality" in addition to being a great coach. He's charismatic in his own weird way, a reliable quote, and the press eats it up. This has a lot to do with why they fawn over him. 2. This in no way makes him "overrated". Bill Parcells won two Super Bowls with the Giants (with two different QBs), took the Patriots to another, and had the Jets in the AFC title game one year. 3. Parcells owns Gibbs in head-to-head meetings. This isn't my opinion, it's a demonstrable fact. He holds a solid edge in their lifetime meetings, is 1-0 in playoff meetings, and is the only coach ever to beat Gibbs three times in one season. Coaches that have won more than one Super Bowl: Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, Chuck Noll, Tom Flores, Joe Gibbs, Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, George Seifert, Bill Walsh, Mike Shannahan, Bill Belichick. Not exactly a pool of mediocrity. Coaches who have won the Super Bowl with more than one different starting quarterback: Gibbs (3), Parcells (2), George Seifert (2). Coaches who have taken more than one team to the Super Bowl: Don Shula, Parcells, Dick Vermeil, Dan Reeves. The Super Bowl has been around for 40 years. If Parcells is so overrated, how come these lists aren't longer? Why is his name the only one which appears on all three lists? Plus if people are going to rip Parcells for having done so little without Belichick, you also have to acknowledge that Gibbs is a rather timid 20-26 without the vastly underrated Ritchie Petitbon. Parcells is one of the greats; I really can't see saying he's "overrated". |
