Peter King On Asante Samuel
 

I know some of you have stated the Redskins should go after Asante Samuel but Peter King's weekly article gives a grim picture. Since the Skins have nowhere near the cap room compared to the Jets how can we possibly compete - can you really restrucure that many contracts especially with Docerky on the free agent market as well?

Here is a tibit below of what King had to say:

"h. The Patriots have to pay [B]Asante Samuel[/B], who's due to be a free-agent at the end of the year. Either that, or they need to franchise him at $7.8 million for 2007. He's an excellent cover corner, and a good run-force guy.
i. And remember, Pats: If you don't franchise him, he'll be dressed in green next year. And I don't mean the Packers. The Jets have only one starter -- right tackle [B]Anthony Clement[/B] -- headed for free-agency, a strong need for a left corner and $28 million of cap room. Think they wouldn't have Samuel signed by 12:06 a.m. on the first day of free-agency?"

If the Jets are smart, they'll go after Nate Clements before Samuel. Clements is the far better player, and I see Samuel more a product of Belichik's defensive scheming.

After we restructure and make some cuts (even if one of the cuts is Archuleta as a Post June 1), we'll have something like $10 to $15 million in cap space, maybe even more.

That's more than enough cap room to get a player we want/need. There are teams that have ridiculous levels of cap space like the Jets. But they're still not going to pay double market value for somebody.

If we really want a certain player, we'll get him.

The redskins need to stop signing these overpriced players and develop some of their own that are young, hungry, and want to play themselves into a big contractinstead of giving players big contracts and hoping they play up to it. They have employed this method for years now and its not working.

A lot of teams are going to have plenty of money to spend. I searched but I couldn't find projected 2007 NFL salary cap of all teams. I foresee an unusually large number of trades this year.

I don't think Samuel fits the mold of what GW likes in his corners.

Agreed, he likes em bigger and more physical. Clements is right up his alley.

The problem is, we cannot stand pat with the secondary we have now, and there aren't enough draft picks to solve the problem.

Is it your position that we'll just have to suck it up with what we have and wait for the '08 draft? I don't like the present free agent philosophy any more than you do, but that's the position we're in.

I do think we have to suck it up because all we would be doing is putting a band-aid on the problem. I think the saying goes "if you keep doing what youve always done you will keep getting what you always get", and right now the redskins are doing is not working. This organization needs a philosophical change and with how broke this organization is the change will be painful.

Like it or not free agency is going to have to be the main way of improving the team this offseason due to the lack of draft picks. As long as we can make moves along the lines of Springs, Washington, Griffin, etc. rather than along the lines of Archuleta & Lloyd, we might be ok.

Yea, we only have 1 impact draft pick if we don't trade down. We need more players than that.

The long term solution is to stop mortaging our draft picks for such players and focus on the draft, a la almost every other succesful team ever (maybe not the 94 Niners). But there is no way we can enter next season with Springs, Rogers, and Proileau (as usual too lazy to spell check) as our starters. Unless we are willing to give up on next season as a rebuilding year - which is pointless because we don't have any young talent to develop, and because Gibbs is nearing the end of the line, and irrelevant anyway bc they are not going to do that - we need to do something to shore up our secondary. So given that we gotta overpay somebody, may as well bring in whoever has the best chance to make an impact.

At some point the orgaization has to bite the bullit because these will be problems that have to be faced often. Change the philosophy now and get to fixing the problem now rather than after the next failed 5 year rebuilding process.

Which is good to know given that GW has done such a phenomenal job building a top-notch secondary.
