an interesting article on the past drafts. We have a lot of discussions about this topic so it was an interesting read.

This is interesting. Redskins are really a unique situation though because they've used the draft as a tool to get proven players.

yeah, it really doesn't take that into account... but you can see that the bengals and the dolphins haven't had much luck, whereas baltimore and tampa bay have been consistant in scouting...

trading picks, like the dolphins did for ricky williams, or the redskins have done isn't counted, which limits the usefulness of the study a bit... but including trades would give the study babylonian complexity i'm sure ;)

This is done by Dr. Z. The same guy that assured us Randy Moss would be a bust in his mock draft a few years back.

everyone hits and misses i guess... we just have a habit of remembering the misses.

Heath Schuler...one of the worst picks ever, almost at the level of Ryan Leaf.

It does kinda take into account that the Redskins traded picks for players, it does that for all the teams. However, the way he does it means that Coles counts as a starter/pro bowler for the Jets and not the Redskins.

Ozzie Newsome (Baltimore Ravens) by far has the best stat's of all NFL G.M.'s in the last 10 years and he only started in 1996.


"I think the star of the chart is Baltimore. Ozzie Newsome began to run the Ravens' draft in 1996. He had 11 first-round choices. Seven of them went to the Pro Bowl, including such showy names as Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis (twin first-rounders in Ozzie's first draft), Peter Boulware, Todd Heap, Chris McAlister, Jamal Lewis and Ed Reed. The only one of his first-rounders whom I didn't classify as a regular is QB Kyle Boller, who lost his job to Anthony Wright last year but is supposed to be the starter this season."

Good article. Stats about the draft picks is something you don't see very often.

I went ahead and merged this with a very similar thread that Canes started last week

Heath was a bad pick. We should of just drafted someone else and got Gus later. At the time you would to belive he was the future. What a dissapointment. But that is the risk you take in the draft.

Interesting to see the Skins aren't the horrible drafters that some people would like to think they are.

No not horrible, but this only looks at the first three rounds and he says that it shows that the teams are all about even. The line that got me was "lifeblood of their future." You've got to admit, with our front office trading draft picks for proven players, the message sent is "the future is now." Not that I mind, right now, but soon we'll miss having those cheap young stars on hand.
