Peter King's view on the Briggs deal

Yes, another Briggs thread. You know you love it.

Here's my view of the deal: You're right -- the Redskins don't have a crying need at linebacker, and I don't expect them to make a trade, swapping the sixth pick in the first round and either MacIntosh or Lemar Marshall for Briggs and the 31st pick in the draft. But I think you need to realize why the Redskins would ponder this move. The one thing you must remember is that Lance Briggs is an excellent football player, one of the five or six best linebackers in football. Last fall, watching the Bears, I saw how they used Briggs and Urlacher interchangeably at both middle and outside linebacker, and Briggs was every bit the factor in many of their big games that Urlacher was. He can take on guards in the hole and he can play side to side as well as almost any linebacker playing today. I think he's worth the big money. If I were the Redskins, I would certainly trade my sixth pick for Briggs and the 31st, but throwing in the good linebacker would kill the deal for me. I hope for your sake the deal in its current permutation doesn't get done.

King failed to point out that Briggs a) has Urlacher playing beside him and b) he had one helluva defensive line in front of him.

Well to play devil's advocate the year Urlacher was hurt Briggs did have a pretty good season.

I can't believe I'm going to agree with the a-hole that constantly denies Monk admission into the hall, but I think he's right on.

He basically does address a) by saying Briggs and Urlacher are interchangeable, as for b) that pretty much goes for any LB in this league.

Show me a star LB and chances are he has a pretty good DL in front of him.

Honestly I think Urlacher is overrated, and I believe Briggs is better than Urlacher, but still we don't need him.

I think they play well together actually. But I'll say it again, unless Briggs is the top two or three at that position, then we have no business trading for this guy.

Vice versa could be true. Maybe Briggs is the one bringing BU's game up. I am more concerned about them being system LBs more than anything. One good LB doesn't make another but only so much better.

You're right, it could be the other way around. I'm just not convinced that the Briggs we know of in Chicago can light it up here in D.C.

I have heard this argument one hundred times.

Urlacher also has Briggs next to him. That theory goes both ways. Urlacher is not Ray Lewis or Lawrence Taylor. He has definitely benefitted from having a great line and a pro-bowler next to him. I don't buy that Briggs is good only because Urlacher is next to him.

The Chicago D is good because they have studs everywhere, not just because of an over-hyped MLB.

King seems to think that Briggs is that good.

Thank you Peter King for telling us what we already know and have been speculating about for weeks...the warpath should sue him cuz I'm sure he's using one of the 100's of threads on Briggs as his primary source
