funeral leave
 

i need to know what others think about this. my wifes grandmother passed away Thursday. the funeral is Monday. my companies policy says that since I'm scheduled to work Saturday night, Sunday night, and Monday night, i get off work all 3 nights. her dad and brother work at the same place, and are just attending the funeral, and then going back to work. they are both salary, and I'm hourly. they enjoy the perks that come with being salary. i do not. they are trying to pressure me to not miss any work. I'm thinking screw them, I'm off. thoughts? also, her dad and brother do not work any weekends

First off condolences to all of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Secondly, I think your first concern has to be you and your wife and what the two of you want...mainly what she wants

Were you close to your wife's grandmother? If you aren't really emotionally impacted I see no reason for you to take all 3 days off. I would, however, expect you to take one day off and attend the funeral.

Sorry to hear about her passing, dmek. Are the brother and father capable of influencing the future progress of your career at that company? If it will weigh heavily with them in a negative way and in turn it will cause you to suffer in the longterm then I would consider going back to work. If that's really not going to be much of an issue then take the time.

Exactly. I would weigh both their influence on your future with the company as well as your wife's feelings. Maybe miss two days and work the third?? And I'm sorry about your loss as well.

Take all three days off . Make sure you attend all calling hours and funeral.

I'd say alot depends on how your wife is dealing with it as well and how close you were to the lady.

If your wife is dealing with in stride (which depending on the age/situation,she maybe), than if you feel you can work, you should.

It all comes down to how you feel and how your wife is doing. Dont work because anyone told you too, and dont skip out because someone told you too. If you need the time off for yourself and/or to be with your wife, you should. It dosent matter what anyone else thinks.

Bereavement leave is not in the same class personal/sick leave. It shouldn't be abused.
